The event – which recently celebrated its 30th anniversary – has never been explained and attracts a variety of different theories.
Expert Robert Hastings, author of UFOs and Nukes, believes the mysterious events had a nuclear weapons connection.
He has spoken to a number of eye witnesses – including base commander Colonel Charles Halt – and said there is evidence to suggest laser-like beams were seen above nuclear storage facilities at Bentwaters.
Mr. Hastings, who recently lectured at Oxford University on the connection between UFOs and nuclear weapons said: "One of the UFOs hovered over the nuclear Weapons Storage Area (WSA) and directed laser-like beams of light down onto or near it."
"At that time, the WSA held the largrest stockpile of tacticval nuclear bombs – also known as battlefield nukes – in Western Europe."
"The incident at Bentwaters was hardly unique. Significantly, UFO incursions at WSAs at other USAF bases occurred in the years both preceding and following the incident at Bentwaters."
Mr. Hastings said other sightings were recorded above WSA's at Michigan and Montana in 1975, New Mexico in 1980 and in the former Soviet Union in 1989.
He believes the UFOs targeted these areas because their occupants were monitoring the nuclear arms race.
"I am speculating but it appears that whatever their overall agenda may be, part of what they are up to is monitoring the nuclear arms race," he said. "I have interviewed over 120 former military personnel in the US – three quarters of them are of the opinion that these things are attemting to wag a finger at us. Admonishing us. Telling us that we are playing with fire."
To mark the 30th anniversary of the incident the East Anglian Daily Times has teamed up with BBC Radio Suffolk to try to explain the mystery in a continuing investigation called Rendlesham Rervelaed.
| The Aerial Phenomena Research Organization (APRO) was one of the oldest and largest civilian UFO research organizations in the world. The research files of this organization have been transferred to the National UFO Historical Records Center (NUFOHRC) in Rio Rancho, NM. |
Dr. J. Allen Hynek, former Scientific Adviser to U.S. Air Force Project Blue Book, cited APRO and NICAP (National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena) the best civilian UFO groups of their time. Both of these collections of UFO archival records along with the files of the Center for UFO Studies (CUFOS) are now housed at the headquarters of NUFOHRC.
APRO was founded in 1952 by Jim and Coral Lorenzen, later based in Tucson, AZ. NICAP was started in 1957 in Washington D.C. by Major Donald Keyhoe. CUFOS was founded in 1973 by Dr. J. Allen Hynek in Chicago, IL. All of these records are in the process of being digitized for electronic storage, analyzation, transfer, and ease of access.
The collective files of APRO, NICAP, CUFOS, as well as Dr. J. Allen Hynek’s original U.S. Air Force Project Blue Book files, constitutes the largest civilian historical UFO case file collection in the United States, if not the world.
An appropriate site is being sought in the Albuquerque, NM area for a permanent facility to house this massive collection of UFO research data. The facility will allow for public access to the UFO data as well as viewing of historic photos and artifacts from the UFO research field. NUFOHRC plans to cooperate with civilian, scientific, and governmental UFO research efforts.
Never in U.S. history has such a vast quantity of UFO records (numbering in the tens of thousands) been centralized in one location.
As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, a tax-deductible donation may be made to NUFOHRC to fund a free-standing public archive building which will make these files and other historical materials more readily accessible for UFO researchers, academics, scientists, and U.S. government organizations. Donations can be made online or via mail.

And in case you are wondering why we single out the Chersmie farm near Tangipahoa as the center of UFO activity, that is the place where photographs of UFOs have been taken. Where strange bits of metal have been found in the pastures and where strange circles have been found in the grass which some people claim are spots where UFOs have landed.
In fact the area around Tangipahoa has been known as a UFO hot spot for nearly a hundred years. I have heard old-timers tell me how they used to see strange lights in the sky when they were driving their wagons back from Greenburg.
But several years ago Mrs. Robert Cheramie startled the area when she said that she found strange rings in her pasture where she thought UFOs might have landed. They had seen strange sights in the sky for sometime and the rings on the earth really startled them.
I personally went and examined them and I must admit they were curious. We found six of them. All six wereexactly 12’ 6” round and there was a section on part of them that looked like a bite had been taken out of one-like a bite taken out of a round cookie. The grass was mashed down in this area and Mrs. Cheramie said that she thought this was where some kind of a ladder swung down to the ground. In the center was a small mound of distrubed earth and lines reached from the center to the outside rim
The outlines were traced out on the grass with a black powdery substance that stuck to the grass. it was as if the grass were coated with black flour that bad crusted to the stem and leaves of grass.
All six circles were identical. All six had a “bite"taken out ofthe outer rim and you could even see where two of them overlapped like the rings left by a wet glass on a dry counter
The black substance was identified by agricultural authorities as being a form of leaf mold and undoubtedly it was, but it was curious that it apperared in such exact shapes.
I mean you would think leaf mold would appear in irregular patches with some big and some little. What makes the appearance of the black substance peculiar is not the substance itself, but the fact that the shape is so regular–as if someone cut them out with a cookie cutter.
And then there is the photograph taken of an alleged Flying Saucer at the same farm. The picture was taken by a Kentwood business man who had been hunting in the fields at Cheramie's. He had killed a limit of doves and his little boy wanted to see where he had been hunting. He drove his son and wife out there and they saw a round flying object hovering in the air. He quickly grabbed a Polaroid camera that he had in the car and snapped a series of pictures, one of which is reproduced here.

And there is the mysterious metal which appeared all over the Cheramie fields–these are the same fields in which the circles appeared.
According to Mrs. Cheramie, the field was covered with a metal that looked like aluminum straw. She brought me a little bag of it and we have tried to take a picture of it. We tested it by seeing if it would fog a film and it does not appear to be radioactive. [We do things like that when people bring us debris they thing is from a Flying Saucer. Frankly, we don't know what the stuff is, but we don't want to take a chance on lighting up like a neon bulb.]

United States pilots have been encountering the eerie "Foo Fighter" for more than a month in their night flights. No one apparently knows exactly what the sky weapon is.
The balls of fire appear suddenly and accompany planes for miles. They appear to be radio-controlled from the ground and manage to keep up with planes flying 300 miles per hour, official reports reveal.
"There are three kinds of 'Foo Fighters," said Liet. Donald Meirs of Chicago. "One is red balls of fire which appear off our wing tips and fly along with us, the second is a vertical row of three balls of fire which fly in front of us and the third is a group of about 15 lights which appear off in the distance–like a Christmas tree up in the air–and flicker on and off."
The pilots of this night fighter squadron – in operation since September, 1943–and three fiery balls the weirdest thing they have as yet encountered. They are convinced that the "Foo Fighter" is designed to be a psychological weapon as well as military although it is not the nature of the fire balls to attack planes.
"A 'Foo Fighter' picked me up recently at 700 feet and chased me 20 miles down the Rhine valley," Meiers said. "I turned to starboard and two balls of fire turned with me. I turned to the port and they turned with me. We were going 260 miles per hour and the balls were keeping right up with us."
"On another occasion when a 'Foo-Fighter' picked us up, I dove at 360 miles an hour. It kept right off our wing tips for awhile and then zoomed up into the sky."
"When I first saw the things off my wing tips I had the horrible thought that a German on the ground was ready to press a button and explode them. But they don't explode or attack us. They just seem to follow us like will-o-the-wisps."
(An Associated Press report from Paris Dec. 13 said the Germans had thrown silvery balls into the air against day raiders. Pilots then reported they had seen these objects both individually and in clusters, during forays over the Reich).
Among pilots at this base who have encountered "Foo Fighters" is Lieut. Henry Bockstige of evensville, Ind.

The president of the Pikes Peak Broadcasting Co., alleged that he was inside one of seven flying saucers at a California federal base in 1942. The saucers are giant flywheels covered with metal skins, he stated. They are powered by electrostatic turbines and have cabins in the center. The cabins are pressurized and have an atmosphere containing 30 percent oxygen and 70 percent helium, instead of part nitrogen.
Thru the use of the flywheel, a magnetic field is created which permits the saucers to travel at tremendous speeds, said Rohrer, who became interested in flying saucers as the result of a thesis he wrote on electronic tubes used to measure electronic tubes during his college training in electrical engineering.
“If a magnetic field is opened around the earth it should be possible to travel at about the speed of light,” he stated. “They have never tried to fly the saucers that have been captured. They are put together in five sections and come apart easily after the center section is removed.”
I have been in one which is 100 feet in diameter and 18 feet thick, Rohrer stated. “The sleeping quarters for crew members are tubes with caps on the ends and the cabin was pressurized and air conditioned.”

The recent announcement by the Air Force that its
Operation Saucer had been closed failed in its purpose to put an
official quietus on discussion of
Flying Saucers [UFOs]. The announcement followed by 24 hours of the appearance in True Magazine of an article by Lt. Donald E. Keyhoe, entitled, "Flying Saucers Are Real." Lt. Keyhoe spoke in Buffalo and repeated his statements after the Air Force announcement had been issued.
