Stanton Friedman has Announced his Retirement

In anyone’s lifetime there will always be certain individuals that have impacted your life or left an impression on you for one reason or another. Such is the case with Stanton Friedman, nuclear physicist and the original civilian researcher of the 1947 Roswell Incident.

I moved to Roswell New Mexico in June 1996, after retiring from the Texas Department of Highways and

Transportation with 33 years in civil engineering work, doing QA and QC inspection of materials used to build highways and bridges. My interest in UFOs had started in the 1980s, and shortly after that I began hearing about the Roswell Incident and eventually, the name Stanton Friedman. I became involved with the International UFO Museum in Roswell a short time after relocating to Roswell, as a volunteer, with the unofficial title of Investigator for the museum.

My first acquaintance with Mr. Friedman was a short year later during the 50th anniversary of the Roswell Incident in July 1997, when Stanton was one of main speakers at the UFO Museum for the event. I didn’t realize it at the time, but that first meeting with Stan grew in to a relationship that I have cherished for the past 21 years, so it is with mixed emotions that I heard about his pending retirement in March 2018. I wish him all the best in retirement, although I personally hope, that with his retirement, he will still be active at times. He certainly deserves retirement at the age of 83 after the career(s) he has had for so many years. None in the field of Ufology have come close to accomplishing what he has accomplished in research, lecturing, visiting libraries and archives, and more importantly, dealing with debunkers and critics publicly.

Stan started early as valedictorian of his high school class in New Jersey. He then went on to obtain a BSc and MSc degree in physics from the University of Chicago in 1955 and 1956. His honesty always impressed me when people at lectures would refer to him as Doctor Friedman and he quickly would correct them that he wasn’t a PhD. For 14 years after college he was employed as a nuclear physicist at GE, GM, Westinghouse, TRW Systems, Aerojet General Nucleonics, and McDonnell Douglas, working on highly advanced, classified programs on nuclear aircraft, fission and fusion rockets, and several compact nuclear powerplants for space and other applications. His claim to fame was that they all became cancelled programs.

He became interested in UFOs in 1958, and since 1967 has lectured on the subject at more than 600 colleges and 100 professional groups in 50 U.S. states, 10 Canadian provinces, and 18 other countries. He has published more than 90 UFO papers and been on hundreds of radio and TV programs. Stan has provided written testimony to Congressional Hearings, and has appeared twice at the United Nations, so if he considers it is time to retire, that’s probably justified, however, this is one researcher who will miss him.

He located Major Jesse Marcel, retired in Louisiana in 1978, who happened to be the Intelligence Officer of the elite 509th atomic bomb group stationed in Roswell in 1947 that dropped the bombs on Japan to end WWII, and Stan’s research about Roswell has continued since then, interviewing witnesses and looking for the truth about the incident. He’s written several books about Roswell that have all gone on through multiple printings. To those interested in Roswell and UFO research I still recommend anything written by Mr. Friedman as an excellent source for information on the topic.

Stan & Dennis at a Conference
Stanton and I have done many lectures at conferences together at such places as Roswell, Aztec and Angel Fire, NM, Presidio Texas and others. We always had time after each day’s conference to have dinner together and discuss the day’s events. At a conference in Aztec, NM several years ago, I had to give this nuclear physicist a hard time when I came out of my room one morning at a bed and breakfast we were staying at, and asked Stan “what he was doing in the hall”, and he replied, “he had locked himself out of his room.” I couldn’t resist giving him a hard time about that.

Dennis and Stan on Tour
A few years ago, when I began doing Roswell UFO Tours here in Roswell, Stan (in the center) was among a group I was touring and added tidbits of information to the tour guests about the Incident. Being around Stan always encouraged me to look for more information, and I always came away knowing more after talking with him. Of all the editorials I’ve written over the years, many times I would forward them to Stan for checking my accuracy on information, and he always would correct me where necessary, before I distributed them.

Stan and I were on the radio show, “Coast to Coast” several years ago, and during our interview he told the show host, “Dennis is the researcher in Roswell all other researchers go to for the answers.” I still have that on my web site home page.

Dennis' Web-Site

Stan has dual citizenship (U.S. and Canadian), living in New Brunswick, Canada, so on a few occasions if he had the name of a new witness he’d call me or email me and ask me to check it out. Such was the case 6 years ago in 2012, when Stan called to inform me that the editor of the other Roswell newspaper in 1947, “The Roswell Morning Dispatch” was still alive. I was surprised to hear that he actually lived in Roswell, so I made arrangements to meet him, had a long interview with him, and wrote a lengthy editorial about that interview.

The wife and I have had Stan over to our house or had a meal at a restaurant with him many times, when he was in town, so he became familiar with my wife Debby’s medical problems, and I never got an email from Stan that didn’t have a closing note asking about her condition, or just a “Best to Deb” message at the end of his email. We always appreciated that concern he showed.

I could go on for many pages about the relationship I was fortunate to have the past 21 years with who I consider the most knowledgeable researcher on the 1947 Roswell Incident in the past 70 years and most likely in the next 70 years. There has always been, and always will be only one Stanton Friedman, and knowing that I had the opportunity to work with him, and most importantly learn from him will be something I’ll always remember. He does have some lectures scheduled this year and plans on being in Roswell in July for the 71st anniversary, and I plan on having the opportunity to visit with him again before he retires.

Stan, enjoy your retirement, and as Bob Hope used to say, “Thanks for the Memories.”

Changes at Area 51

Little ALe’Inn
I have been interested in Area 51 for many years, and in fact was at the gates of the secretive base in 2006, when I was asked to do lectures at Rachel, Nevada. The little town of Rachel is probably best known as the location of the “Little A’Le’Inn, located on SR 375, the “Extraterrestrial Highway” not far from the entrances to the base. (Advertised population of Rachel is 98 humans, ?? aliens.) Many

people try to associate Area 51 with Roswell, thinking it’s in New Mexico, when in fact it’s located some 800 miles from Roswell in Nevada.

Since then I have discovered a web site www.dreamlandresort.com that probably is one of the best sources on the internet to obtain new information about the base.

Dennis Balthaser at Area 51 Entrance
While in Rachel I had the opportunity to visit with Chuck Clark, who at the time was one of a few authorities that had obtained a lot of information about the secretive location about 85 miles north of Las Vegas Nevada. I went out to the gate by myself, traveling down a 13.8 mile long gravel road to the entrance where I was met by “cammo dudes” sitting in their pickup trucks on the hill behind the entrance, watching me with a pair of binoculars. This is the gate or entrance to the base that is the most well known and shown in TV documentaries. They know your coming down that road long before you get there.

The next day Chuck took me out to another gate I wasn’t aware of, located not far from the town of Rachel. Unlike the first gate I visited, this one had the guard shack right by the entrance. At the other location your on the property before you get to the guard shack behind some sand dunes. It wasn’t a good idea to cross the property line since the signs at both gates back thenwarned “the use of deadly force is authorized.” Curiosity seekers are not welcome.

The base was operated by the CIA when it was opened, and originally opened in 1955 to test the U2 spy plane. The Department of Energy was involved with the base, and today it’s controlled by the U.S. Air Force. Years later, in the 1980’s, we found out about the base through a Russian satellite photograph. So it existed without anyone knowing about it for some 30 years, proving the government can keep secrets for a long time as they did with the atomic bomb, new military aircraft, and still do with the 1947 Roswell Incident.

The warning signs and presence of the security guards keeping an eye on you as you get to the gates only adds to our curiosity of what really goes on behind those gates. Very few know what transpires there above and below ground after all these years of the base being located there.

Several things related to the base still exist as they did when I was there, while other things have changed in the past 11 years. Many employees are still shuttled to the base on a fleet of six, Boeing 737 “Janet flight” airplanes from the McCarran airport in Las Vegas where they have their own terminal (only a few blocks from the Las Vegas strip), also under high security. The airplanes are unmarked, painted white with a red stripe down the side, and no identification other than the aircraft number at the back of the planes. They make daily flights to and from the base, in addition to taking employees to other locations with other secretive projects such as Lockheed and Northrop. Between November 2008 and June 2009, all six 737-200 Janet Flight airplanes were replaced with 737-600’s purchased from Air China. The old planes are in the military bone yard in Tucson, Arizona.

Another means of transporting local employees to and from the base is still the use of white buses. Again, the buses have no identification on them other than a government license plate. White appears to be the preferred color of transporting vehicles. Employees living in the general area are picked up and returned in these buses. As a side note, the license plates are government issued, and the first two numbers on the plate are the year of the vehicle. As an example, a truck, jeep or bus having the numbers 98 as the first two numbers on the license plate would indicate when the vehicle was put in service.

No Drone Zone - Aea 51
Warning signs at the entrances have been replaced and changed. The signs no longer say, “The use of deadly force is authorized.” The new signs make it illegal to fly drones in the area. Also, the gate area now has concrete barriers and razor wire. Some of the guard shacks have been improved or replaced at the gates since I was there, so I assume with building improvements, more cameras, sensors, etc., the security at the gates is more stringent then it was in 2006.

Several new large hangers have been constructed, one of which according to satellite images appears to be 215’ x 215’, and about 85’ high. One has to wonder what a hangar of such size would be needed for.

Over the years we have heard rumors that the base has been moved or shut down. Obviously with all the improvements that have taken place in recent years, that cannot be true. The base is very active and probably more active than in the past.

As a researcher, I would like to know what goes on inside the base, including the suspected or reported 22 levels below ground, and in some of those gigantic hangars. Also, what is the purpose of the runways that are some of the longest in the world? Knowing that all of the military aircraft we have had over the years have been test flown there, such as the U-2, SR-71 Blackbird, F-22 Raptor, F-117, B-1 and B-2 bombers, etc., I believe it is a vitally needed facility and still highly secretive, as it should be.

Rumors about aliens and alien craft being there is always mentioned when referring to the base, however, proving this has really never been verified. Possible-- I suppose, when one thinks about all the other things that might be taking place there. So Area 51 continues to mystify us with only bits and pieces of information being released.

Roswell Information is Slowly Fading Away

Roswell Information is Slowly Fading Away
For 69 years the government and military have been avoiding telling us the real facts about the 1947 Roswell Incident and what actually transpired back then.

Three things that are inevitable, I suppose, are time, change and progress; and to me, it appears as if all of those are becoming part of the 1947 Roswell Incident.

Time, primarily due to the fact that many of the first-hand witnesses some of us have known for years are no longer with us, due to their senior age taking its toll on them to the grave, and I understand that will eventually be all of our demise. For me, I truly miss some of them due to the relationships I had with them the past 20 years doing Roswell research.

Change, because it is sometimes necessary, while at other times I have to wonder if the change was really beneficial or needed.

Progress could be a means of developing improvement, or moving forward, however, I don’t always agree with that description either. I’ve seen many changes and improvements over the years which I’m not sure should have been classified as progress.

Add to the above three terms the fact that for 69 years the government and military have been avoiding telling us the real facts about the 1947 Roswell Incident and what actually transpired back then. I can’t help but believe that perhaps that’s the government and military plan, when all the witnesses are gone, changes take place and progress moves on, which will leave nothing to reference back to the 1947 Incident. As a 20 year resident of Roswell I’m starting to see that happen. At times it’s frustrating, but I continue to believe that we need to continue searching for answers, even though the answers are becoming more difficult to obtain because of time, change and progress.

The time factor has been one of the toughest realities I’ve dealt with concerning some of the first hand witnesses I’ve known the past 20 years, who are no longer with us. I had long conversations with many of them during the time I knew them, and am hopeful these witnesses will not be forgotten.

A few I’d like to mention are Jesse Marcel Jr., (Intelligence Officer Major Marcel’s son.) Jesse and I have done lectures together, we’ve had dinner together with our wives, and he and I emailed each other frequently. You miss someone like him when they’re gone, simply because of who he was, and the conversations I had with him over the years.

Two gentlemen that I had the opportunity to be around, almost on a daily basis while I was a volunteer at the UFO Museum in Roswell from 1996 until 1998, were Walter Haut and Mortician Glenn Dennis. They were both original founders of the UFO Museum along with businessman Max Littell.

Walter was the Public Relations Officer at the Roswell Army Air Field, and wrote the now famous July 8, 1947 newspaper article for the Roswell Daily Record under orders of the Base Commander Col. William Blanchard. Walter and I had many discussions about his personal life, and his involvement with the atomic bomb group that dropped the bombs on Japan to end WWII. I was also involved with a video recording Wendy Connors and I did with Walter about his career in the military and his involvement with the UFO Incident.

Mortician Glenn Dennis was the latest first hand witness to pass away in 2015 at the age of 90. I am one of the few researchers who has some slight concerns about Glenn’s account of his relationship with the military nurse at the base hospital, the 6’ 2” Captain that threatened him, and the drawing that nurse did of the alien bodies. That information has never been verified. The nurse and Captain have never been located, and the drawing by the nurse has never been found. I did a FOIA request on Glenn and got a copy of his mortician license issued from San Francisco in 1945, to verify that he was in fact the mortician.

Other people I’ve met over the years no longer with us include Sheriff Wilcox’s 2 daughters; Lt. Robert Shirkey, Weights and Measures Officer at the base in 1947; Art McQuiddy, editor of the other Roswell newspaper in 1947, “The Roswell Morning Dispatch”; among several others. With my interest in the 1947 Roswell Incident since the 1980’s, I feel extremely fortunate that by living in Roswell the past 20 years, I had the opportunity to meet some of these individuals. Consequently I put more confidence in what they told me than I ever will those who have been covering it up for the past 69 years.

St Mary's Hospital (Roswell) Before and After
St. Mary’s Catholic hospital on the south side of town was replaced in 1997 with a new and needed Chaves County Administration building.

Roswell Army Airfield Hospital Then and Now
The Roswell Army Airfield hospital in 1947 was torn down before I moved to Roswell in 1996. Today it’s an open field on the base, and there’s nothing to indicate the hospital was ever there other than an old Air Force photograph I located.

I understand the need for changes and replacing buildings, however with an event as important as the Roswell Incident, those old buildings should be remembered with some reference as to what they were, or what took place in and around them. This and future generations will never know what important events took place at those locations.

Base Fire Station and Control Tower Then and Now
With the term progress, my biggest disappointment occurred this year when the original Roswell Army Airfield fire station and military base control tower were torn down. It’s now an empty lot. I’ve not heard anything from the city why two buildings of such historical value needed to be discarded. They were some of the original buildings at the base, and are now gone. Luckily I did take a photograph of them before they were torn down.

At 74 years old I also will be gone some day, and I hope that future generations will somehow know the importance of the people and buildings that were involved in the 1947 Roswell UFO Incident, and not let it pass in time, change or progress.

Concealing the Truth About Roswell

When doing Roswell UFO Tours with people from all over the world, I’m usually asked the same questions by most of them about concealment of information about Roswell. They have a hard time understanding why after 68 years are those still alive that were involved afraid to come forward with information about what transpired here in July 1947. They also ask why the military and certain government officials are still covering it up. Many also want to know if there were other crashes or events that have also been covered up over the years.

Pertaining to those that were involved with Roswell and are still alive, one has to realize that those individuals would probably be in their 80’s or 90’s today, having been in their 20’s and 30’s when Roswell occurred. That group is fading fast, as time takes its toll on them, and we’re losing first-hand witnesses at an alarming rate. I believe however, that there are several reasons why they won’t come forward and share what they know.

Threats against people and organizations were real back then, and those still alive are well aware of them, (threatening someone’s life over a weather balloon has never made any sense to me). If those involved were career military people, they probably can’t afford to loose that small military retirement they receive, and finally, more than likely they are afraid for their safety and their family’s safety. Over the years there have been accounts of whole families being threatened.

Things were a lot different in 1947, with people respecting the military and government officials only 2 years after WWII ended, when Roswell occurred. Young people I’ve met particularly have a problem understanding how different things were back then, and many of those sworn to secrecy then, have continued to maintain that secrecy after all these years have passed. I sometimes refer to that as respect to those in charge back then, when respect was earned, and for the most part doesn’t exist today, due to our government leaders no longer being respected.

As a last resort, I remain hopeful that those of us that continue to do Roswell research will be able to obtain a few more deathbed confessions or affidavits from those few individuals still alive before they are also gone. Losing first-hand witnesses is becoming a major problem today as we run out of witnesses. Perhaps that’s the government plan---hold out until all the first hand witnesses are gone, and we’ll have no one to talk to.

A few affidavits we have obtained included an affidavit by Brigadier General Thomas Dubose, signed Sept. 16, 1991, in which he stated that when he served as Chief of Staff to Major General Roger Ramey in Fort Worth Texas in July 1947, the material shown in the photographs taken in Maj. Gen Ramey’s office was a weather balloon explanation for the material was a cover story to divert the attention of the press.

In 1998, historical researcher Wendy Connors and I obtained a copyrighted video recording of Walter Haut, the Roswell Army Airfield Public Relations officer in 1947, in which he stated that he had seen a body in Hangar 84 at the base. Researchers Schmitt and Carey later obtained an affidavit from Haut with similar information.

I personally interviewed retired 1st Lt. Robert Shirkey in 2000, and submitted FOIA requests to the Military Records Center in St Louis, Missouri, to confirm that he had been suddenly shipped out from Roswell Army Airfield to the Philippines, 9 days after he had witnessed debris being loaded in airplanes destined for Fort Worth Texas and Wright Field in Dayton Ohio. His military records never indicated he had been transferred. In April 1991, Shirkey prepared an affidavit stating, “ As Assistant Safety Officer with the 509th Group, Base Commander Col. Blanchard requested I prepare a B-29 as soon as possible to take what I believed was debris from a crashed flying saucer to Fort Worth Texas. Several days later, a B-25 was scheduled to take something to Fort Worth. The third airplane during that time was a B-29 piloted by Oliver W. “Pappy”Henderson directly to Wright Field in Dayton, Ohio.”

The Corn ranch site, north of town, was promoted as an alleged crash site years ago, however, in 1947 it was owned and had been homesteaded many years earlier by the McKnight family. In February 1997 I obtained an affidavit from two of the sons of the McKnight’s in which they informed me, “No one in my family had any knowledge of such a [UFO] crash or military retrieval…I cannot believe that a convoy of Army trucks and cars could have come and gone without them noticing. If they had seen it they would have told us about it.” To this day I don’t have any verification that anything happened at the Corn ranch site, and continue to support the Foster ranch site where ranch foreman “Mack” Brazel found debris. He later reported it to the local sheriff, and the military became involved.

Pertaining to the cover-up by the military and government, I believe our government will not admit to anything they can’t control, and obviously UFO sightings and crashes can’t be controlled by our government or military. Many of us believe this has been going on for longer than Roswell, and that it continues to this day while our leaders and military can’t do anything about it. In most cases they say it doesn’t exist, or it is a weather balloon misidentified by credible witnesses. Some day those in authority will have to admit that UFO’s are real and that we have been lied to for some 68 years or more. I don’t anticipate that happening in my lifetime due to my current age, but I’m hopeful that our children or grandchildren will someday know the truth. They deserve to know the truth.

The final question, have there been other crashes, sightings, or UFO events reported at other locations, the answer is a resounding yes. However, I believe the military and government learned from the Roswell crash that it is not a good idea to go public with the information as they did with Roswell in 1947. We’ve had 4 excuses during the 68 years since Roswell occurred and many of us still believe we haven’t been told the truth.

A few of those other incidents occurred at Aztec, New Mexico in March 1948; Socorro, New Mexico, on April 24, 1964; Travis Walton’s “Fire in the Sky” in Arizona on November 5, 1975; the Barney and Betty Hill abduction September 19, 1961; the Washington, D.C. invasion in July, 1952; and the Phoenix lights in March, 1997, to mention a few.

There are many others which continue to be researched, as well, such as Ubatuba Brazil, Sept. 14, 1957; Kingman Arizona, May 21, 1953; Kecksburg Pennsylvania, Dec. 9, 1965; Aurora Texas, April 17, 1897; and Rendlesham Forest, Suffolk England, Dec. 1980.

Credible researchers will continue to investigate these cases and eventually someone in authority will have to come forward and admit that UFOs are real.

FEMA Secrets

In my years of researching underground bases I have discussed several locations in previous editorials which are being used by the military and our elected officials in Washington, as a place to continue the government and military operations in the event of a nuclear attack or other major disaster. Originally these were referred to as part of the “Continuity of Government.”

Mount Weather facility at Bluemont, VA
Mount Weather facility at Bluemont, VA

One of those locations I had mentioned included Mount Weather near Bluemont, Virginia. In the event of a nuclear war, or other national emergency, the President, his cabinet and the executive branch would be located here underground. It is also the operational hub of approximately 100 other Federal Relocation Centers operated by FEMA in the United States.

Raven Rock
Raven Rock
Another location I previously mentioned was the Raven Rock location in Maryland, established in 1954, containing a 700,000 square foot underground facility, which if needed, would house all military departments and the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The Greenbrier Resort
The Greenbrier Resort
A third facility previously discussed in my editorials, was the Greenbrier Resort southwest of Washington. That facility, secretly built “underneath the resort” could have housed about a thousand people, including all members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives and their top aides. It was located about 250 miles from Washington and easily accessible by air, train or car. This facility was deactivated in 1992, when the Washington Post published an article about this underground bunker, exposing it to the public. I have not yet been able to locate a replacement facility for Greenbrier, but surely it exists somewhere close to Washington.

Is it not reassuring for you to know that our top military and elected officials have places to go underground in the event of a national emergency, while you and I (the common people that pay for their well being), are most likely left to fend for ourselves above ground?

My curiosity was aroused when I realized that the three facilities mentioned above were affiliated with FEMA (the Federal Emergency Management Agency), whose Mission Statement is described as follows: “FEMA’s mission is to support our citizens and first responders to ensure that as a nation we work together to build, sustain and improve our capability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from and mitigate hazards.“

FEMA does in fact show up to offer assistance in emergencies such as floods, hurricanes, tornados etc., however, there is another side to FEMA most Americans are not aware of.

Originally conceived in the Richard Nixon Administration, it was refined and President Jimmy Carter signed an executive order on April 1, 1979 that created the Federal Emergency Management Agency. In 2014 FEMA had 14, 844 employees across the country at headquarters and ten regional offices. Many former separate agencies are now under the umbrella of FEMA, and that agency is constantly growing in size. Under President Obama’s fiscal 2015 budget proposal, the Federal Emergency Management Agency would receive $10.38 billion (that’s billion with a B), up from $9.96 billion enacted for this year. FEMA only spends a small percentage of it’s budget on national emergencies, while a much larger portion is used for the construction of secret underground facilities to ensure continuity of government in case of a major emergency, foreign or domestic.

FEMA’s administrative headquarters is located in Atlanta Georgia and their tactical headquarters are located at Mt. Weather, mentioned above in Bluemont Virginia. What lies below the surface is quite different from what is seen on the surface above ground, with well-kept government communication-type office buildings with antennas and microwave relay systems. This facility has been referred to as the “hidden parallel government” of the United States.

FEMA, as one might suppose, has the most advanced communication and data compiling technology available. Their massive data bank includes information on practically every citizen in the U.S., and your name is most likely in that data bank they maintain. There is another list of individuals FEMA maintains that your name is not on. That list comprises about 10,000 people, in addition to the President and his selected staff, who are considered “essential” people to insure the rebirth and continued survival of the country after a nuclear war wipes out the rest of us. I guess my question would be, “Who will these essential people govern if we’re all gone on the surface?”

Among other things located underground at this facility is a mass transit system. Since Mt. Weather is the hub of a network of about 100 other underground facilities, connector routes allow for quick relocation of personnel to the other locations.

Many of our military complexes in the United States have underground facilities, as do other countries around the world, which is understandable to me considering that due to the use of satellites, much of their secretive work can no longer be done above ground. As an example White Sands, N.M., Area 51 in Nevada, Edwards Air Force Base in California and many more military bases around the country all have massive underground facilities in use.

There is much more that FEMA is responsible for than I mentioned in this brief account, and I can assure you most of it has nothing to do with aiding citizens in times of weather related emergencies and disasters around the country. The majority of Americans are unaware of the massive size of FEMA, and more frightening is the power they possess to control our lives.

Interview of Roswell Incident First-Hand witness

By Dennis Balthaser

In memoriam of Art McQuiddy, former editor of The Roswell Morning Dispatch, we re-present Dennis Balthaser’s "exclusive interview" with him, where he recounts events from historic UFO crash (originally published November of 2012); may he rest in peace—FW

Considering that the Roswell Incident occurred some 65 years ago, interviewing first-hand witnesses has become more difficult each year, as they become fewer and fewer each year. I have during the past 16 years interviewed several, and each one has been valuable in perhaps getting new information, or even better for me, confirming what is already known, as I have always felt verification and confirmation remain an important part of doing this research.

Such was the case recently when Stanton Friedman, the original Roswell civilian researcher contacted me about the name of such a person he wanted me to talk to. As it turned out this individual, (now in his 90’s) lives in Roswell, so I placed a phone call to him and had an interesting 30 minute discussion with him, agreeing to meet him for coffee to continue our discussion when I returned to Roswell from a speaking engagement in Texas. That follow-up meeting lasted 1½ hours over several cups of coffee. The gentleman I interviewed was the editor of the Roswell Morning Dispatch newspaper in 1947, when the Roswell Incident occurred.

The gentleman struck me as extremely sharp for his age, with good knowledge of locations, people and most dates. During both interviews he emphasized the fact that I probably knew everything he was telling me, however I explained the importance of verification of the information we were discussing. I prepared several pages of questions and comments for our second interview and will show my questions as “DGB” and his responses as “Editor.”

DGB: Can you share a little background about yourself?

Editor: He was born in 1918 in Sedalia, Missouri, a civil war town of some 21,000 people. He attended the University of Missouri, majoring in American History. He worked for the Sedalia newspaper and also the Kansas City Star as a “cub reporter”, and later as a reporter. He was proud of the fact that he was a reporter for the first NCAA Basketball Tournament held in Kansas City in 1939.

DGB: You told me on the phone that you were a Navy Pilot in WWII. Where were you stationed and what did you fly?

Editor: He graduated from flight school in 1942 and flew twin-engine PBY’s (patrol plane bombers), being stationed all over the south Pacific.

DGB: What occupations did you have over the years in addition to being editor of the Roswell Morning Dispatch newspaper?

Editor: His list of jobs and locations was quite impressive to me having worked for several oil and gas companies and US Steel in charge of Public Relations in places like Washington, D.C., New York City, Salt Lake City, Utah etc.

DGB: When were you the editor of the Roswell Morning Dispatch and for how long?

Editor: For 2 years, 1946-1948.

DGB: On the phone you mentioned having a daughter in Maine. Do you have any other children?

Editor: An older daughter attended Purdue University, majoring in Journalism, worked for the Artesia radio station as the news director, and in 1948 worked for the Roswell Daily Record newspaper.

DGB: Tell me about your wife going to high school with mortician Glenn Dennis?

Editor: My wife and Glenn Dennis were in the same class in high school. He mentioned that his wife passed away 7 years ago, after 59 years of marriage and he was still trying to get accustomed to living alone.

Editorial note: From this point on in the interview my questions were basically related to the 1947 Roswell Incident and his involvement.

DGB: Mr. Friedman had asked me to talk to the editor about several of the people directly involved with the incident to get his comments on each one.

Editor: On Colonel Blanchard, (the RAAF Base Commander) he knew Blanchard well and considered him a close friend. He vividly remembered visiting with Blanchard at the Base Officers club, and specifically asked the Colonel to tell him about the 1947 incident. After some hesitation the Colonel said, “what I saw I had never seen before, and never want to see again.”

On Walter Haut, (The Public Relations Officer) he knew Lt. Haut through press releases he had brought by the newspaper as the Public Relations Officer at the base.

DGB: I asked him what Haut said when he brought the press release by the newspaper?

Editor: He didn’t see Haut as it was around noon and he was out of the office at lunch or at a noon civic club meeting. The Roswell Morning Dispatch was the last media to get the press release, since it was a morning paper. The Roswell Daily Record and two radio stations normally got the RAAF base information before the Morning Dispatch.

On Frank Kaufmann, he thought Frank had a lot of information about the Incident, until I informed him that several of us researchers had discovered that most of what Frank had revealed through paperwork and comments was proven to be false or hoaxed.

On Glenn Dennis, (the mortician at Ballard Funeral home), he considered Glenn a close personal friend. He had heard that Glenn’s health was not good today, and talked a little about the alleged nurse. He said the nurse had called Glenn at the funeral home asking him how many children’s coffins he had at the funeral home. Glenn told the nurse they were in the attic and he’d have to check. She decided to stay on the phone while he looked since she was not at her normal place of duty where he could call her back. When Glenn told her he had 3, the nurse told him where to bring them and she would meet him there. She had him put them in the yard and told Glenn to leave. Glenn also told him that the nurse had been put in a Catholic convent for protection.

On Major Jesse Marcel, (the Intelligence Officer of the 509th bomb wing), he believed that Major Marcel probably took the heat for the cover-up story put out by General Ramey. He heard about Major Marcel’s son Jesse having a book out, but hadn’t read it.

On Mack Brazel, (the ranch foreman that found the debris), he said he never met him.

DGB: After the story broke in the Roswell Daily Record (July 8, 1947), and you issued the Morning Dispatch the next morning, you said you received a lot of phone inquiries about the Incident. Where were those calls from?

Editor: Basically all over the world –places like Paris, Italy, and Australia. There had been other reports about people seeing flying saucers, and he thought the cold war was heating up, so people were interested in hearing about it. He also said that New Mexico State Senator Dennis Chavez called the KGFL radio station owner to tell him the FCC would pull their radio station license if they aired the wire recording of the rancher they had done.

DGB: What about the story that the military picked up the newspapers in town after the story broke?

Editor: No, Walter Haut had given the media outlets the press release around noon and came back that afternoon to get the press release since he said, “it was the wrong story.” He believed this was done at both newspapers and both radio stations.

DGB: What do you know about U.S. 285 being closed to the public after the military got involved?

Editor: He believes that is true and that the road from Roswell north to Vaughn was closed to the public for about a day and a half. Didn’t know any other details, and also doubted the story that has circulated for years that the Roswell Fire Department was involved in some way, but had never heard that.

DGB: What was the reaction of the local residents when the Incident went public in the news media?

Editor: Some local’s thought it might be some secret aircraft of ours, while others believed it was a flying saucer as originally reported. He mentioned 3 prominent people that saw what appeared to be flying saucers in the sky on 3 separate occasions years ago, in the Roswell / Artesia, NM area, and mentioned the Wilmots who also reported seeing something about the time of the Incident from their home in Roswell.

DGB: That leads me to my final question---what is your personal feeling about what happened in 1947 and what do you think it was that crashed on the ranch northwest of Roswell?

Editor: He believed it was from another galaxy possibly here to see what we were doing after testing the atomic bomb just south of Roswell, and the other bombs that were tested in the Pacific. He mentioned that several astronauts have seen unexplainable things while in space.

Before ending our interview, I explained that I write editorials for 30 websites and UFO magazine, and requested his permission to use the interview for that purpose. He gladly agreed, and thought it might be best to just refer to him as the editor of the Roswell Morning Dispatch rather than using his name. I agreed, thanked him for the interview, and he asked that I keep in touch with him, which I will gladly do.

Touring Roswell

Being a long time researcher of the 1947 Roswell Incident, and now doing Roswell UFO Tours here in town frequently, I’m fortunate to be able to share my research with many people who have different perspectives of the Incident from all over the world. Many, in fact most, have heard about Roswell through one means or another, and for the most part are curious to find out more. That’s particularly true of those visitors that book the tours from foreign countries. Many of those have a deeper interest of the event than Americans, perhaps because most of us in this country have been hearing about Roswell for the past 35 years in books, radio, movies and other media outlets. All that exposure however doesn’t appear to have gotten us any closer to the truth, as we continue to seek information about what actually happened here 60 some years ago.

Dennis Giving Tour

By sharing my years of research with small groups, I’m able to share information with them that they may not have heard or seen before in books and television documentaries, and although the information I present is what I’ve learned over the years, I remind them all that the final decision on what happened here in Roswell in 1947 will have to be their decision to believe or not. I simply share what I know as honestly as possible, and that makes them think, which is my goal to begin with.

I knew several of the first hand witnesses, most of whom have passed on, which becomes more of a problem each day, with time taking it’s toll on first hand witness since they would be in their 80’s or 90’s today, if still alive. The tour includes several residences where first hand witnesses actually lived back in 1947. Of course seeing a house in any neighborhood doesn’t mean anything, but I carry a photo album on the tour with photographs of those individuals, and can put a picture and name with the house and explain who they were and how they were involved with the UFO Incident.

When I mention that the atomic bomb was tested a hundred miles from Roswell at Trinity site at White Sands in 1945, many immediately wonder if there was a connection between the atomic bomb being tested so close to where the Roswell Incident occurred 2 years later in 1947. Were “they” out there looking in at us and wondering what are those clowns on earth up to? I suppose that’s a possibility, however, other crashes have occurred at other locations as well.

Another part of the tour that most visitors enjoy, is the historical locations included in the tours where I am able to give them some history about the town of Roswell, pointing out homes in the historical section of town, that were here in 1947, and some that were here much longer, dating back 100 years. Roswell’s western heritage is included with statues of Pecos Valley Cattle King, John Chisum, and Sheriff Pat Garrett, (left), who supposedly shot and killed outlaw, Billy the Kid. Roswell was a pretty wild town in the late 1800’s, with outlaws, gunslingers and cattle people when it first began, several years before New Mexico became a State in 1912. Driving through any town on Main Street doesn’t tell one much about the town, so by giving some information about Roswell’s historical past in addition to what I know about the Roswell Incident, is appreciated by most visitors. Most come away with a new and different view of the town.

Our location in southeast New Mexico always comes up in conversations, due to the fact that Roswell is located about 200 miles from any major cities, such as El Paso, Albuquerque, Lubbock or Amarillo. I enjoy hearing accounts of people that drove from Albuquerque to Roswell, and tell me “there is nothing out there” and they might have only encountered 5 or 6 other vehicles driving the 200 miles to Roswell. Those conversations give me the opportunity to explain the size of many of the ranches out here that are not normally measured in acres, but rather in sections.

For those who don’t know, one section contains 640 acres, and a ranch of 100 or 200 sections is not uncommon. Most also tell me that Roswell is bigger than they expected, now having a population close to 50,000 residents.

RAAF (Roswell Army Airfield)

Several of the buildings that were here in 1947 that had some involvement in the UFO Incident, have been demolished, and in some cases replaced with other buildings. Again the photo album I share with visitors during the tour gives them a perspective of what was there in 1947 and how it was involved with the incident. Unfortunately, no one has erected any markers or plaques to help preserve that important historical part of the incident, so the photo album becomes important at those locations.

After working our way through town we head down to the Roswell Industrial Air Center, as it’s known today. When the Roswell Incident occurred in 1947, the base was referred to as RAAF (Roswell Army Airfield). That changed when the Air Force and Army became separate units. It was renamed Walker Air Force Base until it was closed in the 1960’s. Visitors quickly understand the importance of the base when it was active, primarily due to the only atomic bomb group in the world being stationed here after dropping the atomic bombs on Japan to end WWII, and the fact that that same bomb group was involved in the UFO incident; and it’s importance during the cold war.

Many of the buildings on the base in 1947 are still located there, such as all the government housing; the operations building; fire station and control tower; and perhaps most important to visitors, building 84, known as Hangar 84 back then, where the bodies and debris were allegedly kept before being flown out to other locations. Considerable time is devoted to this part of the tour to educate the visitors about what is known to have taken place there during the incident. There is no longer a military base located in Roswell, however, the Air Industrial center (as it is referred to today), is doing well including a college campus (Eastern New Mexico University); and the International Law Enforcement Academy. All of the hangars from the 1940’s are being utilized by several airline companies to refurbish commercial airplane parts, recycle aluminum, repaint airplanes, and store hundreds of no longer used commercial airplanes on two of the runways.

Doing the Roswell UFO Tours has quickly become one of the most enjoyable aspects of my many years of research, being able to share that research with interested
people in small groups. Most visitors leave with a different perspective of the town and UFO Incident.

No Shortage of UFO Sightings

By Dennis Balthaser

All one has to do to see that there remains no shortage of UFO sightings around the world, is look at a few websites such as Frank Warren’s, TheUFOChronicles.com; George Filer’s, NationalUFOCenter.com or Errol Bruce- Knapp’s, UFOUpdatesList.com to mention just three of my favorites. On these sites and others, sightings from all over the world are documented pertaining to current sightings as well as previous ones. There is no shortage of what is being seen in the skies by common people and professionals that in some cases defy anything we, or any other country on earth have developed. During the past 50-60 years several countries have made advancements in aircraft they have developed, but no country on earth has accomplished the maneuverability that some of these craft being seen, possess.

I have to ask myself, where the technology is coming from so quickly as evidenced in just the past few years. We keep developing new aircraft that several years ago would have been unthinkable. A couple of examples were the F-117 Stealth, (already replaced with F-22 Raptor), the B-2 bomber, and now apparently under development the SR-2 which will be a possible replacement for the SR-71 spy plane. Will our future aircraft have the same capabilities being observed by witnesses now of unknown craft being seen worldwide? I believe they will at some point in our future. I assume it’s possible that we may have already obtained some of that technology from what people report seeing in the sky that they can’t explain. We also know that governments have to keep secrets to avoid adversaries knowing certain things, so could these sightings possibly be one of those secrets being withheld from the public?

I’ve been a strong advocate of that assumption for years as a researcher. The information being reported by certain individuals is overwhelming that we have been, and in fact are probably, being visited by civilizations not of earth. I believe it’s just a matter of time until that is made known, as the evidence continues to mount against a cover-up that has been in place for many years. I don’t know who will reveal it, but in time it will be revealed.

Are these reports all Unidentified Flying Objects from another world? Of course not, but when one looks at the sources of the reports, and the many photographs that accompany some of the sightings, it really raises the question for me, “are we alone in this universe?” There is little doubt in my mind that we are not alone.

Voyager
Granted not all sighting reports are actually flying craft from some other planet, however, with the vastness of the universe and the scientific research that has been developed over the years, it seems pretty obvious that there probably is other life out there somewhere. If not, why are we (The United States), and other countries spending trillions of dollars to send probes to other planets looking for life elsewhere than here on earth?

There is no doubt that we humans here on earth, have gained tremendous knowledge and technology through the various space projects others and we have done. Much of the technology and things we use in our daily lives today is a direct result of the various space programs we’ve had for years. In my opinion, space travel and exploration of the universe should be continued and in fact increased, because of the benefits we derive from it (not ignoring what might be learned from a far advanced civilization somewhere out there should we locate it). Technological knowledge will continue, but at my age I don’t expect contact with another civilization in space in my lifetime. I am however optimistic about what our younger generation might discover and learn.

When looking at all the sighting reports and other accounts of mysterious things seen in the sky, one has to, of course, consider the source of such reports, and the obvious concern that many are hoaxed or unverifiable sightings. My assumption for all the sightings reported is the fact that probably 90% of those sightings reported are explainable as man-made objects, other planets, or natural phenomena. What needs to be concentrated on is the other 10% that are not explainable. An even larger percentage of what is seen are never reported, due to the fear of being ridiculed or laughed at, or worse.

That leaves the credible people who over the years have reported seeing strange things in the sky both in daytime and at night. That list of witnesses would be quite impressive, such as astronauts, law enforcement officers, military personnel, credible citizens and others. They should not be ignored as apparently the news media and certain government and military personnel often do.

Another good source for the amount of UFO activity that exists is the MUFON (Mutual UFO Network) monthly Journal, which lists the number of cases investigated, by each of the 50 states in the U.S. For a report to be considered complete, the report must have been investigated and placed in one of three completed status codes (Unknown, Hoax, or IFO) by the State Director or the Field Investigator closing the case. These monthly reports contain hundreds of cases each month investigated by MUFON.

In addition, Peter Davenport’s The National UFO Reporting Center.com, maintains a detailed database of sighting reports received. This is another excellent site to report a sighting if you have one and don’t know who to contact.

Considering that many people never report a sighting when they experience it, the few documents I mentioned above indicate that UFO activity is still very active not only in the United States but also around the globe, and in many cases are being investigated with reports issued. As long as these sighting reports continue to be made with the use of better technology for photographing them, and reporting it, the pressure remains on those in charge that maintain denial of their existence, or worse are not telling the truth about what many credible people are seeing. Over the years I have discovered that people who actually have a sighting or other experience in what they believe to have been a UFO, is a life changing experience for them, and they usually never forget it.
