Air Force Takes Over Films of UFOs

Headline for the article, 'Air Force Takes Over Films of Flying Disks' provided by www.theufochronicles.com - Spokane Chronicle 10-5-1950

"Nick Mariana said yesterday that the Air Force has taken his color movies of two silver disks [UFOs] that buzzed over a baseball park here August 15."

Mariana said he turned the color films over to the Air Technical Command here [Great Falls, Montana] at the request of a special investigator of the command.

Mariana is the manager of the Great Falls team in the Pioneer baseball league. He said when he saw the disks over the ball park he focused his camera and photographed them.

They appear on the film for about three seconds. He said he was advised by the investigating officials to not release any further information concerning the film.

Proof of Alien Life in Cold War-Era Photos?

A series of telescope photographs from the 1950s
reveal unusually regular patterns of flickering lights in the sky
On a single photographic plate from April 12, 1950, nine dots of light appear in a row in the night sky. To an uninformed eye, they appear unremarkable, perhaps nothing more than technical errors. Yet this particular photographic plate was

produced as part of a larger project to photograph the night sky from California's Palomar Observatory Sky Survey. When lights appear and then disappear without explanation, they are known as transients, and astronomers seek explanations.

This is especially true as UFO sightings have become both more frequent and more effectively documented. Indeed, a group of scientists is arguing that the nine lights of these plates — which were taken seven years before the Soviet Union launched the first man-made satellite into space — could be evidence of extraterrestrial life....

Deconstructing a 1950 UFO Fake

Teen-Age Times of Friday-Sunday, March 24-26, 1950. Credit: D. Marler.

This story could be told in two ways. Starting with the problem and ending with the solution, or the reverse. In the case of this controversial UFO photograph from the early years of the flying saucers craze, I will not follow the chronology of when researchers became aware of the facts but the historical sequence, that is, when things developed, although they were known later.

Flying Saucers Over San Sebastián - La Voz de España 3-22-1950
La Voz de España, March 22, 1950 edition. Credit: J.C. Victorio Uranga.
La Voz de España was a Francoist newspaper edited in San Sebastián city, province of Guipúzcoa, in the north of Spain, 20 km from the frontier with France. The cover page of the issue of Wednesday, March 22, 1950 shared its selected news with this amazing headline: “Flying Saucers [Platillos volantes]

over San Sebastián”. It reported that at 3:30 pm on the prior Sunday, Mr. Mauricio Basurco, a dental technician, and his two twin sisters saw “something black” through one window of their apartment. “Immediately I thought of the flying saucers fad,” the man said. This object was lost to sight between roofs. One of the ladies went to the kitchen’s window and from there they witnessed two more objects. “They didn´t look like airplanes to us,” Mr. Basurco claimed. They were oval-shaped with a black stripe in the middle emitting sparks around. They crossed a cloud bank and reappeared on the background of the blue sky. Now, their shape was “black and they looked like a gramophone record.” Then, five more objects bobbed up, three of which marched almost altogether, “as in a squadron”. The sighting lasted 5-6 minutes.

In my view, this is the unsuspected prelude, never told before, to a long story.
The Teen-Age Times was a short-lived1 weekly magazine for youngsters edited in Dublin (Ireland). Sensationalism-bound, the March 24-26, 1950 edition carried on its cover page an extraordinary and exclusive news feature: Russians had developed a “suspension bomb” that would be “swinging like a red star over your city,” and this could somehow be related to the apparition of flying saucers. This piece was signed by “Nobel Price”. Hand in hand with the information was a photograph of nothing less than “the first sensational picture of The Flying Saucers.” Two bomb shells, indeed…if true. Regarding the so-called suspension bombs, nobody heard about this anymore. Regarding the picture, we will judge it later.

The present article has been motivated by David Marler, a US UFO researcher who was investigating this picture for a long time. ...

Flying Saucer Crashes Near Crystal Springs (Heading) 5-13-1950

aircraft. In 1950, the term "UFO" had not yet come into usage, and "flying saucer" was used for unidentified flying objects of any shape. Mohon's saucer was actually described as cylindrical, and "definitely not an airplane." The Clarion Ledger scooped the nation with the saucer news, and credited the witness as co-author of the story, along with reporter Tommy E. Hederman.

The story was rushed to press and was on sale Saturday morning before all the facts were in. The investigation by Crystal Springs authorities was reported later the same day by other area news papers.

Impressive UFO Case File From The CIA

CIA UFO Info Report 8-4-1950

Paul Dean By Paul Dean
The UFO Chronicles
12-8-15

America’s Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has a long history of involvement in the UFO matter. By the 1970’s researchers already knew that they had a large body of internal records, including raw intelligence information reports, discussion papers, foreign press items, etc. In 1978 UFO research group Ground Saucer Watch (GSW) successfully forced the CIA to release some 900 pages of UFO records after lengthy Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. But was this all the CIA had? Researcher Brad Sparks ascertained that 200 more documents were directly referenced in those 900 pages, but suspiciously not included in the 1978 release. More documents of CIA origin have been released since 1978, but their contents are usually of low level significance. Of late, I have been spending some time using the CIA’s electronic search engine known as “CIA Records Search Tool”, or “CREST” and recently I discovered a hitherto classified and unseen CIA record related to the infamous and still unsolved 1975 “over flights” which intruded on myriad nuclear-armed bases across the USA. That work can be viewed here.

But how many more records does the CIA have yet unreleased? And how many more are released but as yet unseen by researchers? I may have found another example of one such record – and a very early example at that – which means that unnoticed CIA records are not so rare after all. What is rare, however, is getting any enthusiastic and competent help with projects like this, especially when that help comes from a Scottish girl who – if you can believe this – is just 17 years old. Glasgow based UFO researcher Lara Elliott, who has already aided Fran Ridge’s exemplary NICAP case chronology listings, studies the “core” UFO phenomenon, and thankfully hasn’t been sucked into the puerile theater of UFO “entertainment”.

But I digress. The newly found CIA record seems to be a copy of information supplied to them by US Air Force Intelligence. Loren E. Gross has highlighted the case in Volume 7 of his outstanding “UFOs: A HISTORY” series. I haven’t seen the Air Force material, but the CIA record I found is a 4th August, 1950 case report from the Atlantic Ocean. The first page is headed “CENTRAL INTELIGENCE AGENCY” with “INFORMATION REPORT” underneath. The subject is “Unidentified Airborne Object”. “At Sea – North Atlantic” is the location. Interestingly, a huge area of text at the top of this first page is blacked out, or, redacted. Next to that sea of ink is the familiar phrase “THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION”. Listed next to the word “SOURCE” is “Officers…”, then the names and other details are blacked out. Finally, “…..who reported the following observations at 10:00 am EDT on 4 Aug 50 at 39° 35’ North, 72° 24 ½ West”. (See image above top).

How interesting. The second page of this case report is imaged below.

CIA UFO Info Report (pg 2) 8-4-1950

Obviously this, by anyone’s measure, is a UFO case. It’s the usual story: qualified witnesses, classically unfamiliar visual description and performance, and indisputable CIA paperwork regarding the event. As stated, Loren E. Gross has detailed the same case, and provides very similar information. Starting on page 4, that work can be found here.

Furthermore, the above example demonstrates that the CIA has more records in various states of availability. How many more, and probably more importantly, what the significance of such records will be, is anyone’s guess. As for Scottish researcher Lara Elliott, I wish to thank her for transcribing the above document for this blog post. As far as I am aware, she is the only very young person in the field who wishes to contribute to the serious side of UFO research. Without new and young people, we are somewhat doomed. Lara’s level-headedness is exemplified at Fran Ridge’s gigantic archive – one of the best in existence – here:

Eyewitness Account of 1950 Farmington UFO Armada

Virgil Riggs Recalls 1950 Farmington UFO Armada

By Robert Richardson

12-13-15

RIO RANCHO, N.M. —The Farmington Armada incident got a lot of local press at the time, but it took 65 years before there was in-depth research into the northwest New Mexico phenomenon.

[...]

Marler went in search of witnesses but discovered most of them are no longer living. However, he found a few, including 73-year-old Virgil Jerry Riggs.

Riggs lives in Wyoming now and made the trip to Rio Rancho to be a part of Marler's presentation. He said it means a lot to him that the researcher is preserving the history of what happened in 1950.

"I'm sure there are skeptics out there. I'm sorry about the skeptics. All I can tell you is what I saw, what I observed," Riggs said.

He was 8 years old and a student at Aztec Elementary School in 1950. Riggs said he went outside for recess and thought there were stars in the sky, but middle and high school students pointed out the objects way up above.

"All these square-looking formations in the sky. They were made up of dots, and the dots would shift from one formation to another," he said. "The first day there were a few, the second day there were too many to count and the third day, there were maybe 30 or 40 of them left."
