Marine Robot Finds Monster at Loch Ness

Marine Robot Finds Monster at Loch Ness

A new underwater sonar-imaging investigation into Loch Ness has uncovered the remains of a monster.

Led by Kongsberg Maritime and supported by The Loch Ness Project and VisitScotland, the mission using Munin, a state-of-the-art intelligent marine robot, has revealed new information about the elusive 230 metres deep loch, uncovering areas underwater that have never been reached before.

Within the findings, 180m down on the loch bed, Operation Groundtruth has uncovered a recognisable creature. However, although it is the shape of Nessie – it is not the remains of the monster that has mystified the world for 80 years but more one that has inhabited the loch for over half that time and is a star of the silver screen.

The finding is in fact that of a 30-foot Loch Ness Monster model from the 1970 film, The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, directed by Billy Wilder and starring Robert Stephens and Christopher Lee. [...]

A Scottish tourist unwittingly captured an unidentifiable sea monster while vacationing in Greece.

Harvey Robertson was on a boat cruise off the coast of Parga, sailing through sea caves with his family. He was initially just trying to capture the unusual color of the surrounding water with his iPhone camera.

What he shot instead has baffled those across the Internet—and marine scientists. Looking back through his camera, Robertson saw that he had captured a grey creature that resembles an elongated manatee. The strange animal appears to pop out of the water in one photo, then disappears under the greenish water in the next. [...]

'Loch Ness' Monster Video is 'Authentic,' says Iceland Commission

The Icelandic commission has recently ruled the video of mythical 'Loch Ness' sea monster captured in 2012 to be "authentic." The peculiar video seems to show an enormous scaly creature swimming through the lake water and was shot through a window by Hjortur E. Kjerulf in February 2012, Metro.co.uk reported.

The giant serpent, Lagarfljotsormurinn, has been the subject of folk tales since the fourteenth century.

The footage rapidly went viral, being viewed eight million times, and the local area council set up a 'truth commission' to decide whether it was real. It narrowly voted that the video was authentic, which means that wins a prize of 2,700 pounds.

Nigel Watson, a paranormal expert, said that they are like the aquatic version of UFOs. . . .

Mothman Museum lays out evidence for believers and skeptics

POINT PLEASANT — Museums are usually reserved for proof.

Their exhibits — whether it’s a taxidermied specimen of some long-extinct animal, a collection of dinosaur bones, a historic document or some famous work of art — are meant to prove the existence of something and preserve those artifacts for future inspection.

Not so with the Mothman Museum, Point Pleasant’s number-one tourist attraction.

There is no Mothman specimen. There’s not even a clear photo of the creature, or any other definitive proof of its existence.

Like Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster, Mothman is a mythic creature that some people adamantly believe is real, even though the larger scientific community does not.

However, the museum does feature several different kinds of “evidence,” such as it is, laid out for visitors to form their own opinions. . . .

. . . A mysterious video has emerged on YouTube from Tuesday night which appears to show a glowing “alien-like creature” floating in the waters of Bristol Harbour.

The footage has been viewed thousands of times and caused a stir on Twitter and Facebook – and even the experts cannot agree on what it is that uploader John Tombe has captured on camera.

Andrew Spooner, an IT professional living in Bristol, witnessed the “creature” and tweeted a picture, describing it as “some weird craziness swimming around in #bristol harbour. Looks alien…”

The squid-like being flashed brightly in the darkness for around half a minute, witnesses said, before disappearing – and has left experts at odds over what could have happened.

Dr Steve Simpson, from the School of Biological Sciences at Bristol University, saw the footage and told the Bristol Post: “It's very intriguing - I don't really know what to make of it. . . .

It's big. It's brown. It's definitely dead. But don't be fooled -- it didn't come from the ground, or outer space.

Chances are that this "sea monster," which washed ashore this week in Southeast Asia, are the remains of a whale. According to the Daily Star, that hasn't stopped some people from going "down the alien route and [presuming] it to be a large creature from outer space similar to that in the 1990 film Tremors." . . .

Bigfoot in Maine? 10-Foot-Tall ‘Wild Man’ was Killed in 1886, Newspapers Reported

10 Foot Tall 'Wild Man' - Waterville Sentinel 10-8-1886

Editor’s Note: This story contains passages from newspaper reports 127 years ago that today might be offensive to some readers. The intent is to accurately reproduce the accounts from that time period.

WATERVILLE, Maine — In the same month the Statue of Liberty was dedicated in New York in 1886, a handful of newspapers in New England published stories about a deadly encounter in the Maine woods involving what today likely would be termed “Bigfoot” or “Sasquatch.”

The story of the 10-foot-tall “wild man” with 7-foot-long arms and hair growing all over his face and body was reported in broadsheets of the time after first gracing the pages of the Waterville Sentinel, a weekly paper that no longer exists. The Waterville Morning Sentinel was established 18 years later in 1904.

Tales of these seldom-seen, mysterious apelike beasts are found in Maine folklore, according to experts, but they are more prevalent in California, Washington and Oregon tales. Online searches yield hundreds of similar stories from around the globe.

The Maine story starts in early October 1886 when “an affrighted Frenchman from over the line” arrived in the Elm City to weave a frightening tale of woe, according to an excerpt from the Sentinel published in at least two other papers of the era, the Wilton Record and The Industrial Journal of Bangor.

“The Frenchman’s story, which is implicitly believed, is that three men were camping out in the woods about a hundred miles north of Moosehead Lake,” the 127-year-old newspaper articles state. “Two of the campers were away from the camp for a week and came back to find the dead body of their companion.”

The unnamed storyteller, possibly a Canadian, “had his fellows in town all by the ears” with the story about the giant wild man he encountered in the dense woods above Moosehead, according to the papers. . . .

Staffers at the institute are calling it the discovery of a lifetime. . . .

Residents of Villaricos were baffled last week, when a strange-looking sea creature washed ashore a beach in the southern coastal town Thursday. The mysterious carcass has been called everything from "horned sea monster" to a "mutant fish."

After a beachgoer reported the unusual find, authorities pulled the remains of the estimated 13-foot creature further onto the beach and cordoned off the area. According to ABC de Sevilla, the carcass exuded a strong odor and appeared to be in a state of decomposition.

María Sánchez, the civil protection coordinator for nearby Cuevas del Almanzora, speculated that mysterious marine animal may have washed in from somewhere near Africa.

"It has the shape of a snake," she described to ABC. "It's similar to a dragonfish that allegedly comes from Africa and could have been dragged by the current." . . .

Plett’s ‘alien’ puzzle solved

By John Harvey

IT would not be surprising if Plettenberg Bay residents start referring to their town as Area 44 after the carcass of an "alien-looking” creature was discovered at Nature’s Valley this week.

They might even start cashing in on the 044 area code by equating it with New Mexico’s mysterious Area 51, given the bizarre appearance of an animal found on Monday by Curt-Leigh Dixon, 17, the son of SANParks ranger Llewellyn Dixon.

But Dr Magdalena Braum of The Crags Vet Clinic, who performed a postmortem, said yesterday the mysterious creature, exhibiting a highly elongated torso, was in fact a newborn female baboon.

"It was most likely killed by a bite through the skull soon after birth – possibly infanticide which is very common in some primate species when a new male takes over the troop,” she said. . . .
