Obama Will Be The UFO ‘Disclosure President’

Stephen Bassett On The Alan Colmes Show
Thursday on “The Alan Colmes Show,” Alan spoke with Washington’s only registered UFO lobbyist, Stephen Bassett, about what the government knows about discovering extraterrestrial life in the universe and if the public will ever truly be informed about it.

Bassett told Alan that the government has known about UFOs and their contact with humans for decades, including U.S. presidents who wanted to do further research. Bassett also said that it will be Barack Obama who will make history by being the first president to fully disclose what the government knows and explained why the media has been part of a coverup.

Only Man in Washington Lobbying for UFOs

The morning after I contacted the Defense Department, I got a voice mail message. "Man, we were looking at your query from yesterday on the UFO stuff," the public affairs officer said. He sounded as if he was trying not to laugh. "You're killing us."
AJ Vicens

January/February 2016

He read aloud some of the questions I'd sent: "Which presidents have asked about UFOs? Does the president have the security clearance to know about UFOs? What happens if extraterrestrials show up?" He alternated between chuckles and exasperated sighs. "Which office handles UFOs? Dude, really? I don't know how to—we don't have that." He trailed off laughing. "I don't know how to answer these questions, man."

Most people in Washington don't know how to answer those questions—or at least say they don't. But Stephen Bassett, America's only registered lobbyist on UFO and extraterrestrial issues, is convinced that the government has this information and it's only a matter of time before the president "announces to the American people that we're not alone." This much-anticipated mind-blowing moment, known among some UFO enthusiasts as the "disclosure," will officially confirm that "there are extraterrestrials, not only elsewhere, but engaging us now." Unveiling UFOs Consumes Life for Lobbyist

One day nearly 20 years ago, Stephen Bassett realized that UFO abductees needed a lobbyist.

He had spent four months working for the Program for Extraordinary Experience Research out of a modest town house in Cambridge, Mass., when he had the epiphany: He could continue his research with John Mack, the leading authority on the alien abductions, for the rest of his life, but it would never make a difference.

"It occurred to me that it wasn't a scientific problem, but a political one," he said. They could pile evidence of extraterrestrial encounters from the White House lawn to the moon, and no one would pay it any mind. What the issue needed was someone who could get the powers-that-be to listen.

He had spent four months working for the Program for Extraordinary Experience Research out of a modest townhouse in Cambridge, Mass., when he had the epiphany: He could continue his research with John Mack, the leading authority on the alien abductions, for the rest of his life — but it would never make a difference.

“It occurred to me that it wasn’t a scientific problem, but a political one,” he said. They could pile evidence of extraterrestrial encounters from the White House lawn to the moon, and no one would pay it any mind. What the issue needed was someone who could get the powers-that-be to listen.

The alien issue was really heating up in 1996, what with the summer blockbuster “Independence Day,” and Bassett worried someone else would get the same idea. So he quit his volunteer gig, piled his belongings atop his beat-up Mazda RX-7 and drove off to Washington.

“I get down there, and I file” the lobbyist papers, he recalled. “I’m the first one. Nineteen years later, I’m still the only one. I coulda taken my time.”

Bassett, a balding man with expressive eyes that seem to go from blue to green, has long had one goal: Get the government to admit it has been covering up proof of alien visits. [...]

Pressuring the Government to Disclose Extraterrestrial Activity

Based in the nation’s capitol, Stephen Bassett is a lobbyist working tirelessly for a single, unusual cause: confronting the US Government on the existence of extraterrestrials and their presence here on Earth.

As a political activist and executive director of the Paradigm Research Group (PRG), Basset aims to end the 68-year embargo of classified information relating to alien activity while pressuring President Obama and the Executive Branch to disclose these findings to the public.

Following the statements made to me by Apollo 14 Astronaut Edgar Mitchell on government cover ups and claims of nuclear weapons tampering by extraterrestrials, I was contacted by an associate of Stephen Bassett who expressed gratitude on his behalf for covering those stories.

Seeing an opportunity to dig deeper into these claims, I decided to interview this unique D.C. lobbyist about his beliefs and mission.

Why did you decide to take up this fight and how did you get started?

I made an intellectual decision to engage the extraterrestrial phenomenon field in the winter of 1995 because I believed I could make a difference. My journey began in January of 1996 as a volunteer for the Program for Extraordinary Experience Research founded by Dr. John E. Mack in Cambridge, Massachusetts. While in Cambridge it became clear to me that the extraterrestrial issue could only be resolved by political means. [...]

UFO Activist to Capitol Hill: ‘Beam Me Up!’

Stephen Bassett, executive director of Paradigm Research Group and founder of the Extraterrestrial Phenomena Political Action Committee (X-PPAC), has devoted the past 18 years to overcoming the “truth embargo” about government involvement in alien affairs.

He’s now ready for Congress to officially weigh in.

. . . Bassett laid the groundwork for his latest congressional outreach a few years back, hosting a 30-plus-hour mock hearing (spanning five days) at the National Press Club in 2013. He had copies of the recorded sessions of the Citizen Hearing on Disclosure delivered to every Capitol Hill office — a bundle containing 10 DVDs, a letter signed by the participating witnesses and a request to meet with Bassett — immediately following the midterm elections. . . .

"What, Realistically, Do You Hope To Accomplish?" | WHITE HOUSE UFO PETITION

Road without end

By Billy Cox

Talk about snakebit. The very day UFO activist Steve Bassett launches his latest petition to enlist White House support for UFO hearings on The Hill — boom — religious degenerates in France monopolize the headlines by slaughtering irreverent free thinkers. Not to suggest in any way that Bassett’s designs on dragging The Great Taboo into the sunlight was in any danger of getting MSM attention in the first place; after all, this is his seventh pass at it. Still. Given the patterns, it kinda makes you wonder about the mysterious ways in which the universe rewards this species of tenacity.

Let's go back a dozen years or so. As founder of the nation's only registered lobby dedicated to wresting the "UFO truth embargo" from government shadows, Bassett decides to run as an independent in Maryland’s 8th Congressional District. If elected, the director of the Extraterrestrial Phenomena Political Action Committee will raise hell under the Dome to declassify federal UFO secrets. But in October, with the 2002 campaign rounding the home stretch, a couple of psycho car-trunk snipers turn the D.C. 'burbs into a shooting gallery. Voters are thinking more about exit routes and body armor than ET. Bassett gets maybe one percent of the vote.

In the ensuing years, he will hit if from other angles. At the beginning of the Obama administration, for instance, he urged kindred spirits to swamp the White House press corps with letters, emails, phone calls, etc., urging them to ask the new regime pointed UFO questions. He called that one the Million Fax on Washington.

He also staged a series of Washington-area "X-Conference" seminars in hopes of exposing the Beltway media to a range of perspectives on The Great Taboo. In 2007, Washington Post political columnist Dana Milbank shows up. Amid such a target-rich environment, Milbank naturally takes the freak-show angle, and furnishes an opening quote from a crackpot who says, "The truth amnesty project is reportedly recommended by the participating extraterrestrials themselves." The media momentum never materializes; financial woes follow. Yet, in 2013, thanks to a million-dollar wad dropped on the thing by Canadian philanthropist Tom Clearwater, Bassett rolls his biggest wager to date. He stages what he calls the Citizen Hearing on Disclosure. He pays half a dozen retired congresspersons, including a former senator, $20k apiece to preside over a week-long series of testimonials from UFO witnesses of wildly divergent pedigree and persuasions. It will be conducted with the formality of real hearings. Afterwards, Bassett will produce and forward DVDs to every member of Congress.

“We’ll create so much public interest, a lot of the editors are gonna say, Christ almighty, enough is enough, that’s it, let’s get some answers from these guys,” Bassett says before the big show at the National Press Club in Washington. “And if they ask the right questions, I predict the truth embargo will be over within 60 days."

Dot dot dot ...

But wait -- just before that, in 2011, in a hideously tantalizing twist of fate, the White House announces it will officially address whatever grievance Joe Sixpack wants to bring to its attention. Seriously. Team Obama made the initiative sound populist by calling it We The People. And all Joe Sixpack's gotta do is convince 5,000 people to sign an online We The People petition. Five thousand names -- that's nothing.

Almost immediately, the geniuses who dreamed up that paltry threshold know they’ve screwed up when an avalanche of gripes, from the profound to the egregiously insipid, begin clogging the pipes. Within weeks, the We The People architects decide to raise the bar to 25,000 signatures. Still, it's too late to thwart Bassett’s demand that the administration “formally acknowledge an extraterrestrial presence engaging the human race and immediately release into the public domain all files from all agencies and military services relevant to this phenomenon.” The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy responds with rote blurbs on SETI and Kepler and Mars Curiosity Rover, along with this:

“The U.S. government has no evidence that any life exists outside our planet, or that an extraterrestrial presence has contacted or engaged any member of the human race. In addition, there is no credible information to suggest that any evidence is being hidden from the public's eye.”

Six more We The People petitions will follow — e.g., please investigate UFO intrusions over U.S. nuclear missile fields, make official public inquiries into President Clinton’s murky intrigues with the so-called Rockefeller Initiative, etc. But none of those appeals will come close to reaching the 25,000 signature mark. And by 2013, after having to respond to a non-Bassett petition requesting America to build a Death Star as a jobs-creation stimulus, We The People has pretty much had it with Those People and raises the trigger response to 100,000 names. Which means Bassett, in this latest round, will need to gather more than 3,000 names a day by Feb. 6 to provoke the White House into to weighing in on his request for support of congressional UFO hearings. Should the sun rise in the west and he actually reaches six figures, here's De Void's crystal ball on We The People's response: “The executive branch does not set the legislative agenda, but we take your concerns seriously. Therefore, we have forwarded your request to the Hon. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and the Hon. Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) for their thoughtful consideration.”

And finally, there’s this: After three notifications from the Federal Elections Commission that his Extraterrestrial Phenomena Political Action Committee is five months derelict in reporting receipts and disbursements, Bassett now describes his one-man lobby as “in suspension.” And yet. When asked by De Void, "What, realistically, do you hope to accomplish?", Bassett's succinct email reply is stalwart: "Disclosure."

This story has a moral to it. Somewhere. It just has to.

FBI Historian Demonstrates His Ignorance of Agency's UFO Files & Investigations

2013: More dust from the well

By Billy Cox

Recapping some highlights of the mainstream media’s 2013 UFO coverage:

In March, just for the hell of it, apparently, the FBI issued a press release proclaiming how an innocuous, disregarded, single-page squib on an alleged UFO crash in 1950, declassified in 1978, is the most popular document sitting in its two-year-old online “Vault” archives. Wide-eyed newsies at Fox, NBC, Wired, Time.com and others went into scramble mode and treated it like breaking news on a chemical fire.

More acceptable than covering UFOs: Even when we manufacture fiction and call it reality TV, we manage to find the time and space to report every non-scripted utterance and banality as news/CREDIT: breitbart.com
In August, the CIA conceded the existence of Area 51 in a report about the development of the U-2 spy plane. American movie-goers discovered the top-secret Nevada airbase from the 1996 blockbuster “Independence Day,” but the New York Times, USA Today, CNN, et al, ran with the “scoop” like Paul Revere through the streets of Boston. An Associated Press reporter wrote that “UFO buffs and believers in space aliens are celebrating” but provided no details about the size, location or nature of said merriment, nor the name of a single reveler.

At a Center for UFO Research conference in Greensboro, N.C., in June, speakers included leaders from the French equivalent of NASA and Chile’s counterpart to America’s FAA. Both of those official government agencies continue to collect UFO data from military and civilian sources. The New York Times, USA Today, CNN, et al, were no-shows.

UFO activist Stephen Bassett organized a mock congressional panel in Washington called Citizen Hearing on Disclosure in late April/early May. Its mission statement held that “an extraterrestrial presence [is] engaging the human race.” The media turned out en masse. Coverage excerpts: “Extraterrestrials. As in little green men,” (Washington Post); from the San Jose Mercury News to a former California representative on the hearing panel: “Lynn Woolsey. Phone home”; “Only little green men at National Press Club are dead presidents on $20,000 honorarium paid to committee members,” (The Guardian); “Space Cadets Hit D.C.,” (New York Daily News). Prior to the conference, Bassett predicted “We’ll create so much public interest, a lot of the editors are gonna say, Christ almighty, enough is enough, that’s it, let’s get some answers from these guys.” Media interest dissolved immediately thereafter, like ice cream in July.

Al Jazeera debuted widely across the U.S. in 2013 with the promo: “There’s more to it. Change the way you look at news. Get more depth, more perspectives, every day.” AJ’s perspective-changing coverage of UFOs crested with a 2-minute 30-second blurb from Bassett’s Citizen Hearing. Although the Pentagon dismissed the iconic 1947 Roswell Incident, noted AJ's standup blow-dry, “the FBI has confirmed that in 1950, it passed on a report” — flash to an image of the same tired old FBI document declassified 35 years ago — “of three flying saucers recovered in New Mexico.” More depth, more perspectives, EVERY day. Exit line from the Citizen Hearing spot: The White House may have ignored public appeals for a new investigation of UFOs, but “that won’t stop a small but vocal few from maintaining that the truth is out there.”

Good god. De Void has more items on the list, but what's the point? Enough already, I'm done with 2013. Just shoot me.

Gearing Up for The Next Round: "'Extraterrestrial Presence' is The Right Way to Flag Congress..."

Let the clamor begin ... again

By Billy Cox
De Void
8-30-13

Last December, when he was organizing the Citizen Hearing on Disclosure, Stephen Bassett thought he saw the light at the end of the tunnel. Five straight days of UFO testimony in Washington, D.C., and Americans would be clamoring for more coverage.

“The media is the most powerful lever the public has to stick it to government,” he said then. “Without the media, it's almost impossible to press the government to take action in the public interest ... We’ll create so much public interest, a lot of the editors are gonna say, Christ almighty, enough is enough, that’s it, let’s get some answers from these guys. And if they ask the right questions, I predict the truth embargo will be over within 60 days.”

Four months gone now since the week-long parade of eyewitnesses — some impeccable, some dubious — participated in a mock congressional hearing at the National Press Club. Coverage was erratic, often snarky and most definitely allergic to follow-ups, even with veterans testifying to bad juju surrounding U.S. nuclear missiles. Which apparently proves that, in order to impress the media, it’ll take a lot more than $600,000, the conservatively estimated retail price for putting the Citizen Hearing together.

Q: So where do these desultory results leave Bassett’s Paradigm Research Group?

A: Gearing up for the next round.

With continuing financial assistance from Vancouver millionaire Tom Clearwater, PRG is transferring all this videotaped testimony — some 30 hours worth — into multi-DVD sets; by late October, it plans to have sent them to the offices of all 535 Congressional members. Then comes a followup social media/email blast requesting that Disclosure advocates pressure the pols — or at least staffers — to review the videos, then lobby them to meet with Bassett about staging real hearings on The Hill. The reasoning here is that, with record-breaking, bottom-sucking popularity numbers, way down there in the muck with the albino catfish, skates and methane-eating microbes, elected officials will have to think twice about blowing off constituent requests.

But there’s no getting around the media flop on the front end. Bassett acknowledges that. “It did not get anywhere near to what I thought it would get. There were no network interviews at all,” he says. “We just didn’t have enough money to drive media awareness. Between that and the bombing nine days before the hearings ...”

Right — the Boston Marathon bombings. Media commitment to that horror story drained the air out of the Hearings and practically everything else that went down in May. Bassett has a right to feel snakebit. In 2002, he ran for Congress in Maryland’s 8th District on a platform of UFO disclosure. As his independent campaign rounded the home stretch that October, car-trunk snipers Lee Boyd Malvo and John Muhammad decided open fire on Beltway-area voters who weren’t all that interested in hearing about UFO coverups at that point.

Anyway, Bassett remains convinced his use of “extraterrestrial presence” is the right way to flag Congress, and that detractors who say the ET riff is premature are the ones playing games.

“The number of potential Earth-like planets that can sustain liquid water has increased exponentially,” he says, referring to this summer’s Astrophysical Journal Letters hypothesizing that as many as 60 billion habitable worlds could exist in the Milky Way alone. “We have zero evidence for operating in another dimension or moving around in time. Politically, it doesn’t make a damn bit of difference if you’re talking about time travel or ETs or whatever, OK? Semantics is just another debunking tool.”

So here’s the context for PRG’s next round: Only one (1) percent of Americans think Capitol Hill is doing an “excellent” job, and just 6 percent label its work as “good,” according to a recent Rasmussen Poll. “Poorly” — that’s a euphemism for what 64 percent think. In fact, the 113th Congress is on track to become America's most worthless collection of public “servants” since evaluations began in 1948. Now, throw in WikiLeaks revelations about unending malfeasance abroad, garnish with Edward Snowden's exposes on domestic surveillance, then marinate with a generation of disillusioned and wired digital-native millennials who, for some reason, think American institutions are diseased and contagious. Slide this broth into the oven and Bassett figures he’s got a winning recipe for Disclosure hearings.

“Gee, would the NSA lie about surveillance on the American people, would the president lie about WMD in Iraq? What the millennials see is a government that will lie about anything,” Bassett says. “They lie about war, they lie about peace, what’s to stop them from lying about extraterrestrials? We’re going to need the participation of the 20 to 35 crowd. They’re the ones who are going to make the difference.”

And if that approach doesn’t work, well, as long as mysterious Tom Clearwater, a reputed oil man, keeps the money coming, no doubt something else will.

Bassett Doubles Down on UFO Disclosure

By Jack Brewer
The Examiner
8-28-13

UFO disclosure activist Stephen Basset of the Paradigm Research Group distributed an email Tuesday describing the next steps of his ongoing plan. Mr. Bassett outlined a series of upcoming activities, the sizable goal of which “is to end the ET truth embargo immediately.”

Beginning in October, according to the email, DVD sets of the Citizen Hearing on Disclosure and related materials will be sent to members of Congress. Meetings with officials and their representatives will then be requested in order to discuss what Bassett calls a need for Congressional hearings on an extraterrestrial presence. Constituents will be prompted to simultaneously urge their elected officials to grant the requested meetings with Bassett and support his efforts.

The email indicated a resolution to the United Nations will also be pursued. “This will help galvanize the political media as well as the Congress,” it was suggested, “which would not relish being preempted by the UN on the extraterrestrial issue.” . . .

Citizen Hearing on Disclosure:
Remarkable Revelations Undercut By Distressing Disinformation

Citizen Hearing on Disclosure

By Robert Hastings
www.ufohastings.com
5-18-12

Although I was repeatedly invited—pestered, actually—by Stephen Bassett to participate in the hearing, I chose not to lend my name and credible research to the event. Over the past 40 years I have interviewed more than 140 U.S. military veterans, regarding their involvement in UFO incidents at nuclear weapons sites. Seven of those individuals participated in my September 27, 2010 "UFOs and Nukes" press conference in Washington D.C., which CNN streamed live:

Even though I decided not to be a part of Bassett's recent affair, the co-sponsor of my press conference, former U.S. Air Force Captain Robert Salas, became involved, asking three other USAF veterans to join him. Each of them—Captain Bruce Fenstermacher, Captain David Schindele, and Technical Sergeant David Scott—had independently approached me over the past three years and revealed their nukes-related UFO experiences.

Salas believed that the hearing would provide valuable public exposure for those incidents, and his own, which involved the mysterious shutdown of 10 widely-separated nuclear missiles at Malmstrom Air Force Base's Oscar Flight, on March 24, 1967, just as a glowing red, disc-shaped UFO was observed hovering over the central launch control facility.

Moments before the four men began to testify about those encounters at ICBM sites, Stephen Bassett took the microphone and said that their impending statements would be "the most important" revelations during the five-day event, which included some 40 witnesses. Quite a statement. Sitting next to the vets was researcher Richard Dolan, I guess as a substitute for me, sort of.

So why did I decline to participate? As I noted in an open email, circulated shortly after the event:
All,

As I told a friend, when he asked me to assess the Citizen Hearing before it happened, "Nothing is black or white. Some good will come from it, however, I suspect that the negatives will outweigh the positives and I am concerned that the ex-USAF missileers who've decided to participate will end up being unfairly associated with the less-than-credible witnesses."

Well, given that former U.S. Senator Mike Gravel (D-Alaska) took the Air Force veterans seriously and went so far as to say that their statements were the "smoking gun" that confirmed that there was/is a government cover-up on UFOs, I would say that I was correct about the good part.

Also, serious researchers were in evidence, including Peter Davenport and Kevin Randle, to name two. And credible whistleblowers, such as retired FAA administrator John Callahan.

But as I watched the hearings, all five days, it became clear that I was also correct about the bad part. Bassett has never vetted his witnesses, refuses to do so, probably doesn't even know how, and it frequently showed. So, it's not surprising that there was more than a little BS, wishful thinking, and unwitting participation in hoaxes and disinformation ops.

Welcome to the Wonderful World of Ufology.

However, given how rare it is for a high-level government type to say something affirming about UFOs and the cover-up of same—even though Sen. Gravel left Washington in 1981—I decided to issue this press release.

It has already received some useful attention. The debunkers will say that I am posting it just to sell books. That's what they always fall back on, since the information I have collected over the years from military veterans is credible, documented, and hard to refute.

Robert
Over the past few days, various recipients of that email have asked me to elaborate on one or two points, so I am doing so here. In particular, there is curiosity regarding my remark about some ufologists having been duped by hoaxers and government disinformation agents. The remainder of this article and, importantly, the links that follow it, will address this topic:

Decades ago, no later than 1990, overwhelming evidence emerged which confirmed the fraudulent nature of the so-called MJ-12 documents. No matter how many times certain researchers—who should know better—suggest or outright claim that they are legitimate, one glaring fact remains: Not a single "document" has a verifiable provenance, confirming its origin within the U.S. government network of departments and agencies.

On the contrary, exhaustive work done by Barry Greenwood, Dr. Kevin Randle, Jan Aldrich, Brad Sparks, the late Bob Todd, and myself—as well as others—makes clear the bogus origin(s) of the alleged documents. Whether they were created by still-unidentified hoaxers, or now-exposed disinformation agents working for the Air Force Office of Special Investigations—or a combination of the two—remains in dispute. However, the forensic and anecdotal data are damning.

Except, of course, to those who have a vested interest in the documents being for-real, either due to their own insupportable biases, their lack of understanding about the basic requirements for document-verification, or the general gullibility they have displayed with distressing and seemingly oblivious abandon over the past several years.

Because MJ-12 reared its ugly head again at the Citizen Hearing, I felt this article would be timely. Despite claims by Linda Moulton Howe regarding the so-called "SOM 1-01 field manual" being genuine, and the embarrassing video of "the dying CIA agent" who discussed his supposed knowledge of MJ-12 for Howe and Richard Dolan, there is every indication that the "manual" is fraudulent, and it is a virtual certainty that the testimony of the "agent" is equally bogus.

Links to my most recent article on MJ-12, and updates, published in 2009, have been inserted at the end of this one. I also recommend reading these articles by Bob Todd and Barry Greenwood in the now-defunct newsletter Just Cause:

MJ-12 is DEAD
In conclusion, while I am gratified that the collective testimony of the ex-USAF nuclear missile launch officers and ex-missile guard at the Citizen Hearing was well-received by the former members of congress and the media, it remains problematic that a forum used for such authentic, important revelations was also a conduit for the kind of water-muddying nonsense offered up by others.

If Steve Bassett views himself as some valiant leader in the fight for governmental honesty on the UFO topic—and he certainly does—it should be noted that others see him as a thoroughly reckless, narcissistic, self-aggrandizer whose credo is "The end justifies the means".

That type of thinking has derailed legitimate revolutions throughout human history and the fact that Bassett remains oblivious to this makes him all the more an impediment to the process of true, meaningful Disclosure.

One of the links below, a radio interview, lays bare his view on vetting witnesses, which is to say he won't. Consequently, as in the past, future Bassett events will undoubtedly be a confused jumble of credible, valuable information mixed up with wholly unsubstantiated, over-the-top claims paraded as tantalizing glimpses of The Real, Inside Story of UFOs.

No wonder the skeptics scoff. Surely the public deserves better.

The Most Dangerously Ignored Aspect of UFO Behavior

The momentum question

By Billy Cox

Mike Gravel     With the sort of hyperbole that characterized much of his political career, former U.S. Sen. Mike Gravel told ABC/Yahoo News that the testimony of Air Force veterans reporting UFO activity over American nuclear bases was “the smoking gun” of last week’s Citizen Hearing on Disclosure. A smoking gun, of course, requires a bit more documentation than the summary evidence delivered in Washington (although there’s plenty of other data, too detailed for a brief oral presentation). Nevertheless, the 82-year-old former Democratic/Libertarian presidential candidate certainly identified the most dangerously ignored aspect of UFO behavior, i.e., a purported ability to override American missile command systems.

Robert SalasFront and center of the nuke controversy was retired Air Force captain Robert Salas, who for nearly 20 years — against strong cultural currents of indifference and ridicule — has relentlessly attempted to steer the debate into the mainstream. In fact, Salas shared his first-hand account of a 1967 Minuteman missile shutdown at Malmstrom AFB at the exact same National Press Club venue in 2010; yet, as Gravel and five other former Capitol Hill colleagues made clear, last week was the first they’d ever heard of the incidents, which have produced an anecdotal legacy of recurring patterns.

Salas has been a critic of Citizen Hearing organizer Steve Bassett and initially declined an invitation to participate. Yet, the potential for bringing his story to larger audiences proved impossible to resist, and to maximize the impact, Salas convinced two other USAF veterans, former Tech. Sgt. David Scott and Capt. David Schindele to submit their own testimony to the panelists. Salas’ reservations about attending were at least partially borne out, especially after watching disclosure advocate Steven Greer’s documentary “Sirius.”

“That turned out to be a big bust. I’ve got a master’s degree in engineering and I couldn’t understand what Greer and (Dr. Tom) Valone were trying to say about how UFOs needed an inertial shield to make those 90-degree turns,” Salas said. “It sounded like a lot of malarkey.”

From the other part of the mixed bag, however, came the revelation that eyewitnesses to the so-called Bentwaters UFO Incident outside an American NATO base in the UK in 1980 are having to sue the Department of Veterans Affairs for access to their own medical records. Saddled with health issues possibly related to elevated radiation levels detected at the site of that event, former USAF security officers Jim Penniston and John Burroughs claim that not even the efforts of former Arizona Sen. John Kyl could pry those files loose. “I found that amazing,” said Salas. “That’s the first time I ever heard about that sort of thing.”

Ultimately, Salas gave props to Bassett for staging a “well organized” event, his mostly high-caliber witnesses, and the ensuing media coverage that went all the way to the New York Times (pedestrian though its derivative little thing was). And of course there was the rote institutional blowback from veteran pols like Rep. Peter King (R-NY), who as chair of the House Homeland Security Committee had previously ignored not only veterans’ affadavits to draw his attention to the UFO-nuke enigma, but those of a constituent cleric as well. Salas began spearheading that effort two years ago. Last week, when the New York Daily News finally did its job and asked King about Salas’ initiative, the best this member of the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence could offer was: “I have no idea what the guy is talking about. We are always getting crazy stuff in the mail by people whose brain has been taken over by aliens or something.”

Responded Salas from his home in California, “That was insulting. I’m going to try to get him to apologize for that statement.”
