UFO Community Members Weigh in on Dubious MUFON Speakers

Jack Brewer By Jack Brewer

"We hope to bridge the gap between science and ufology. They're one in the same."

- MUFON International Director Jan Harzan, 'Las Vegas Sun'

Concerns were expressed in the wake of the Roswell Slides debacle about organizations such as the Mutual UFO Network continuing to promote those who supported and enabled the empty claims surrounding the alleged slides. Don Schmitt was quickly back in the spotlight at a recent MUFON PA event, for instance, and beWITNESS promoter Jaime Maussan was invited to speak at the upcoming 2015 MUFON Symposium. MUFON WI Assistant State Director and Chief Investigator Mark O'Connell subsequently urged the organization to remove Maussan from the list of speakers. He also requested MUFON ban Maussan and Schmitt from future events, along with their slides colleagues Tom Carey, Richard Dolan and Anthony Bragalia. It seems Adam Dew has relatively removed himself from ufology, at least as compared to his beWITNESS associates and for the time being.

Further consideration reveals the challenges to be common and merely among the latest of what is relatively standard operating procedure concerning the low quality of speakers and information typically offered. MUFON and the North American UFO community in particular have systemic problems of credibility and poor quality of information circulated, as observable in not only the invitation extended to Jaime Maussan to speak at the annual MUFON conference, but the additional inclusion of such questionable figures as Paul Hellyer. Many people particularly object to the circumstances in light of the organization's claim to be dedicated to the scientific study of UFOs, an assertion now so widely taken for granted as false that it no longer even generates significant discussion.

Adding insult to injury is an upcoming MUFON PA event in which the keynote speaker is yet another dubious figure, Dr. David Jacobs, who, as of this blog post, quite questionably continues to claim to be a "strong advocate of strict scientific and ethical research methodology." Trouble is that if those claims were to be taken any more seriously than the underachieved MUFON mission statement, Jacobs has been repeatedly shown to fail miserably at actually implementing such purported advocacy into his own work. The retired historian's so-called investigations were conclusively demonstrated to be extremely ethically questionable and completely absent scientific merit. Nonetheless, MUFON is opting to roll out the red carpet and present him with a lifetime achievement award, as if it had no knowledge of either the actual definition of science or Jacobs' confirmed actions, detrimental to both his research subjects and the quality of the genre's collective body of information.

Several members of the UFO community were recently contacted and asked to submit comment on the above circumstances for inclusion in this blog post. Following are their most appreciated contributions. . . .

No Shortage of UFO Sightings

All one has to do to see that there remains no shortage of UFO sightings around the world, is look at a few websites such as Frank Warren’s, TheUFOChronicles.com; George Filer’s, NationalUFOCenter.com or Errol Bruce- Knapp’s, UFOUpdatesList.com to mention just three of my favorites. On these sites and others, sightings from all over the world are documented pertaining to current sightings as well as previous ones. There is no shortage of what is being seen in the skies by common people and professionals that in some cases defy anything we, or any other country on earth have developed. During the past 50-60 years several countries have made advancements in aircraft they have developed, but no country on earth has accomplished the maneuverability that some of these craft being seen, possess.

I have to ask myself, where the technology is coming from so quickly as evidenced in just the past few years. We keep developing new aircraft that several years ago would have been unthinkable. A couple of examples were the F-117 Stealth, (already replaced with F-22 Raptor), the B-2 bomber, and now apparently under development the SR-2 which will be a possible replacement for the SR-71 spy plane. Will our future aircraft have the same capabilities being observed by witnesses now of unknown craft being seen worldwide? I believe they will at some point in our future. I assume it’s possible that we may have already obtained some of that technology from what people report seeing in the sky that they can’t explain. We also know that governments have to keep secrets to avoid adversaries knowing certain things, so could these sightings possibly be one of those secrets being withheld from the public?

I’ve been a strong advocate of that assumption for years as a researcher. The information being reported by certain individuals is overwhelming that we have been, and in fact are probably, being visited by civilizations not of earth. I believe it’s just a matter of time until that is made known, as the evidence continues to mount against a cover-up that has been in place for many years. I don’t know who will reveal it, but in time it will be revealed.

Are these reports all Unidentified Flying Objects from another world? Of course not, but when one looks at the sources of the reports, and the many photographs that accompany some of the sightings, it really raises the question for me, “are we alone in this universe?” There is little doubt in my mind that we are not alone.

Voyager
Granted not all sighting reports are actually flying craft from some other planet, however, with the vastness of the universe and the scientific research that has been developed over the years, it seems pretty obvious that there probably is other life out there somewhere. If not, why are we (The United States), and other countries spending trillions of dollars to send probes to other planets looking for life elsewhere than here on earth?

There is no doubt that we humans here on earth, have gained tremendous knowledge and technology through the various space projects others and we have done. Much of the technology and things we use in our daily lives today is a direct result of the various space programs we’ve had for years. In my opinion, space travel and exploration of the universe should be continued and in fact increased, because of the benefits we derive from it (not ignoring what might be learned from a far advanced civilization somewhere out there should we locate it). Technological knowledge will continue, but at my age I don’t expect contact with another civilization in space in my lifetime. I am however optimistic about what our younger generation might discover and learn.

When looking at all the sighting reports and other accounts of mysterious things seen in the sky, one has to, of course, consider the source of such reports, and the obvious concern that many are hoaxed or unverifiable sightings. My assumption for all the sightings reported is the fact that probably 90% of those sightings reported are explainable as man-made objects, other planets, or natural phenomena. What needs to be concentrated on is the other 10% that are not explainable. An even larger percentage of what is seen are never reported, due to the fear of being ridiculed or laughed at, or worse.

That leaves the credible people who over the years have reported seeing strange things in the sky both in daytime and at night. That list of witnesses would be quite impressive, such as astronauts, law enforcement officers, military personnel, credible citizens and others. They should not be ignored as apparently the news media and certain government and military personnel often do.

Another good source for the amount of UFO activity that exists is the MUFON (Mutual UFO Network) monthly Journal, which lists the number of cases investigated, by each of the 50 states in the U.S. For a report to be considered complete, the report must have been investigated and placed in one of three completed status codes (Unknown, Hoax, or IFO) by the State Director or the Field Investigator closing the case. These monthly reports contain hundreds of cases each month investigated by MUFON.

In addition, Peter Davenport’s The National UFO Reporting Center.com, maintains a detailed database of sighting reports received. This is another excellent site to report a sighting if you have one and don’t know who to contact.

Considering that many people never report a sighting when they experience it, the few documents I mentioned above indicate that UFO activity is still very active not only in the United States but also around the globe, and in many cases are being investigated with reports issued. As long as these sighting reports continue to be made with the use of better technology for photographing them, and reporting it, the pressure remains on those in charge that maintain denial of their existence, or worse are not telling the truth about what many credible people are seeing. Over the years I have discovered that people who actually have a sighting or other experience in what they believe to have been a UFO, is a life changing experience for them, and they usually never forget it.

Sacramento 'UFO Explosion' Mystery Revealed | UFO NEWS | PHOTO

Tampa Bay Weather Balloon Shatters (Collage) 7-2-12

The explanation for what many people thought was an exploding UFO above Sacramento is no longer a mystery -- it was a weather balloon.

After HuffPost reported how Elijah Prychodzko videotaped a circular, bright aerial object through his telescope over Sacramento on Dec. 20, 2012, the volume of explanations began rolling in for the possible identity of the object.

Those included alien spacecraft, military weapons test, a runaway planet, Doomsday rock headed to Earth and shot down by the Air Force, North Korea's satellite, and, even, a hoax.

If the images above and below look similar, it's because they both show the same type of event as seen through telescopes -- the difference being that the picture above was taken over Tampa Bay, Fla., on July 2, 2012, and the one below was the object photographed over Sacramento on Dec. 20.

Many readers speculated that what Prychodzko captured on video was a weather balloon and not something that occurred in deep space.

"Obviously, something of this magnitude (planetary-size space explosion) would have been noticed by government (NASA) and or professional astronomers along with a host of amateur astronomers," 40-year veteran UFO researcher Frank Warren told HuffPost in an email. . . .

Guest Frank Warren to Discuss Crimes Against UFOlogy on The Joiner Report

Guest Frank Warren to Discuss Crimes Against UFOlogy on The Joiner Report

By Sherry Boardman
The Joiner Report
3-31-11

Sherry Boardman     Copyright infringement, plagiarism, piracy, and out right theft have become the crimes against UFOlogy.

Frank Warren, publisher of The UFO Chronicles, will join Angelia on Thursday night’s The Joiner Report to discuss the issues ufologists are battling while continuing their dedicated research.

There are those who seek their own notoriety. Being unable to achieve success, they prey on others who have already concluded years of research and presented it to the public in whatever means available to disseminate the information, often free gratis. It is well-known that those who have availed themselves of others’ end products are receiving illegal monetary gain.

Ufologists are fighting the crimes, but justice is not swift.

Tune in to The Joiner Report Thursday night, March 31, 7:30-9 p.m. Central (8:30-10 p.m. Eastern), http://inceptionradionetwork.com, when Frank Warren will share his insight on these crimes and relate the steps being taken to rectify the misdeeds of others.

This week's show will be guest hosted by Frank Warren and his guest will be leslie Kean.

LESLIE KEAN is an independent investigative journalist with a background in freelance writing and radio broadcasting. She has contributed articles to dozens of publications here and abroad including the Boston Globe, Philadelphia Inquirer, Atlanta-Journal Constitution, Providence Journal, International Herald Tribune, Globe and Mail, Sydney Morning Herald, Bangkok Post, The Nation, and The Journal for Scientific Exploration. Her stories have been syndicated through Knight Ridder/Tribune, Scripps-Howard, New York Times wire service, Pacific News Service, and the National Publishers Association. While spending many years reporting on Burma, she co-authored Burma’s Revolution of the Spirit: The Struggle for Democratic Freedom and Dignity (Aperture, 1994) and she has contributed essays for a number of anthologies published between 1998 and 2009. Her freelance journalism has been supported by grants from numerous foundations including the Open Society Institute of the Soros Foundation, The Fund for Investigative Journalism, and the Nation Institute.

Kean was also a producer and on-air host for a daily investigative news program on KPFA radio, a Pacifica station in California. She began covering the UFO subject in 2000 with a feature story in the Boston Globe, and followed with additional mainstream stories. In 2002, she co-founded the Coalition for Freedom of Information (CFi), an independent alliance advocating for greater government openness on information about UFOs, and for responsible coverage by the media based on a rational and credible approach. As director of the CFi, she was the plaintiff in a successful, five-year Freedom of Information Act federal lawsuit against NASA. In 2007, she co-organized a landmark Washington DC international press conference on official UFO investigations, which received media coverage around the world.

Kean was a producer for the 2009 independent documentary I Know What I Saw and is currently working with Break Thru Films, an award-winning film company, on a new feature documentary. She and her coalition have launched an ongoing initiative to affect US government policy so that scientists and aviation authorities can gain greater understanding of the still-unexplained UFO phenomenon.

Her latest achievement comes in the New York Times Best Selling Book, UFOs: Generals, Pilots, and Government Officials Go on the Record:

UFOs - Generals, Pilots and Government Officials Go On the Record By Leslie Kean

“At last, a serious and thoughtful book about this controversial subject. Skeptics and true believers will find a treasure trove of insightful and eye opening information. This book is bound to set the gold standard for UFO research.”
– Michio Kaku, Ph.D., Author of Physics of the Impossible: A Scientific Exploration into the World of Phasers, Force Fields, Teleportation, and Time Travel

“I was astonished by the care and precision of Leslie Kean’s research in this terrific book. Her analysis is carefully reasoned and to the point; her craftsmanship in organization and writing are superb. Her expose’ raises important questions: Why does the US government create public distrust by neglecting this important topic? Why do its agencies avoid investigating cases of interference with flight operations and instead issue absurd cover-up stories? This book is ultimately an appeal to all scholars for an “extraordinary investigation of an extraordinary phenomenon.”
– Rudy Schild, Ph.D., Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics

“Like me, Leslie Kean is an agnostic on the issue of UFOs. Her book is a fine piece of journalism – not about beliefs, but about facts. Kean presents the most accurate, most credible reports on UFO’s you will ever find. She has fought long and hard to discover the facts and let the chips fall where they may. She may not have the final smoking gun, but I smell the gunpowder.”
– Miles O’Brien, former CNN space/science correspondent

“I find explanations offered by UFO enthusiasts and conspiracy theorists to be implausible, but I also have little patience with “deniers” who ridicule credible reports. Leslie Kean has found a thoughtful path between extreme views, documenting the UFO mystery with intelligence and insight. She makes a strong case for U.S. participation in official, international UFO investigations and for public dissemination of the results. The fascinating first-hand accounts make this a thought-provoking book, even for those of us who don’t know much about UFOs.”
– Neal Lane, Ph.D., Rice University; former Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy

“If you don’t know much about UFOs, you must read this book. If you think that UFO reports are nonsense, this book will disabuse you of that notion. Leslie Kean’s UFOs: UFOs: Generals, Pilots and Government Officials Go On the Record informs readers at every level of knowledge and belief. It could, and should, become the “tipping point” that leads to public acceptance of the reality of UFOs and all of its implications.”
– Don Donderi, Ph.D., Department of Psychology, McGill University (Ret.)

“In an area of study where there aren’t many, this is a serious book. It is credible, clear, and compelling, without any farfetched jumps in logic and assumption. Its credibility begins on the first page with John Podesta and continues with case studies of extraordinary quality to the very end. Leslie Kean not only makes the case for, but calls for, a whole new concrete and realistic perspective on UFOs that has more honesty and integrity than any other that I have read. This is a book for anyone with an open mind.”
– John L. Petersen, Founder & President of The Arlington Institute

“In these pages we are confronted head-on by the UFO phenomenon as revealed firsthand by highly credible government officials and military aviation experts. Their credibility and integrity cannot be questioned, and their firsthand observations cannot be ignored. Leslie Kean provides a challenging analysis and she writes with penetrating depth and insight. The revelations in this book constitute a watershed event in lifting the taboo against rational discourse about this controversial subject.”
– Harold E. Puthoff, Ph.D., Director of The Institute for Advanced Studies at Austin

“When I started reading Leslie Kean’s UFOs, I found it very difficult to stop. This is an unprecedented assessment of what may be the greatest challenge ever presented to mankind. In an outstanding piece of investigative journalism, Kean provides a well-written and convincing appeal for change in dealing with a phenomenon that can no longer be ignored.”

– Jean-Claude Ribes, Ph.D., Paris Observatory (Ret.)

“For anyone who questions why – after more than fifty years of denial, ridicule, and dismissal – many scientists, academics, political figures, and military personnel still insist that the subject of UFOs should be taken seriously, this book provides the answer. Leslie Kean offers compelling documentation that physical objects, with flight characteristics not yet achievable by known technology, are being routinely reported in our skies. They represent a mystery that needs to be solved.”
– Stuart Appelle, Ph.D., Dean of the School of Science and Mathematics, State University of New York, Brockport

“Leslie Kean’s astonishing book is the finest piece of investigative journalism ever written on this subject. She has an incomparable ability to ‘give voice’ to a constituency of exceptionally qualified and unbiased first-hand observers. They are not from the fringe, not groupies, and not delusional. Rather, they are high-level military, intelligence, aerospace, and government officials who speak with authority while providing reports that document actual, physical craft. Kean’s book represents the first important step toward a new U.S. government openness about UFOs. It brings forward a reality otherwise buried for far too long inside official mystery, and elevates the discourse above that of small-minded public discussions.”
– Christopher C. Green MD, Ph.D., Harper University Hospital, Wayne State University School of Medicine

“Leslie Kean has written a unique and powerful book on the UFO subject that provides a compelling argument against current establishment attitudes and practices. The tone throughout is right, the writing is sober and first-rate, and the contributors are indeed distinguished and make their cases with serious dignity. The contributions have been woven together into a coherent flow that builds the case for a serious study of the UFO phenomenon. I have no clue what the chance is of getting the U.S. government to open even a small office to investigate UFOs, but if it does happen, her book will have been one of the catalysts.”

– Mark Rodeghier, Ph.D., Scientific Director of the J. Allen Hynek Center for UFO Studies (CUFOS)

UFOs & NUKES | "The Bogey Appeared to Explode in Mid Air and Land in a Field”

UFO Over Whiteman Air Force Base 8-7-1964

UFOs digging our nukes is not news

A few weeks ago, Frank Warren, who runs a Web site out of Sacramento called The UFO Chronicles, interviewed another retired USAF officer with a national-security secret. This guy was on launch-control duty at a Midwestern nuclear missile silo in the Sixties when a UFO buzzed the bunker he was assigned to and scared the spit out of topside security.

Robert HastingsStories like these are becoming increasingly common. In his 2008 book UFOs and Nukes, New Mexico researcher Robert Hastings talked with military veterans who’ve placed UFOs stalking America’s A-bomb factories since the 1940s, from Hanford to Oak Ridge. Some 120 have shared their stories, and last September he brought seven of them together for a press conference in Washington.

Anyhow, during his efforts to verify the latest eyewitness account, Warren went noodling through the online USAF archives of the ancient and largely discredited Project Blue Book. And he found something he hadn’t bargained for — documentation of yet another UFO incursion at yet another missile field, and it wasn’t the one he was looking for.

This one occurred at Sept. 8, 1964, at Missouri’s Whiteman AFB, then bristling with Minuteman I warheads, and it was a real doozy. According to the report, the bogey “appeared to explode in mid air and land in a field.” But whatever it was, this “blue light” recovered, regained altitude, and “kept changing course” as it cruised multiple ICBM sites. “Efforts by mobile strike team to intercept failed,” the official continued in truncated English, and as the UFO exited restricted air space, “the chase was turned over to civil authorities.”

Unfortunately for the military, this incident couldn’t be contained because the state highway patrol initially logged it, and “the Secreaty (sic) of the Air Force needed this information in a hurry as someone had reported it to UPI and associated press also had info on it.” So the encounter has been out there for nearly 47 years. But Warren hadn’t heard of it. Nor had Hastings, the UFO go-to guy when it comes to nukes.

“Clearly, we’ve barely scratched the surface on these events,” says Hastings. “The officers are debriefed by OSI (the USAF Office of Special Investigations) when these things occur, they’ll all tell you this, but very few of those records have been declassified. You just hit a stone wall with FOIA, you get a blanket denial, that the OSI documents don’t exist. They’re obviously lying through their teeth.”

But who knows how much other good stuff is collecting dust in the Blue Book archives? Who actually has the time to pan through all that sediment?

“A lot of people presume that anything you find there is gonna be fluff,” says Warren. “I don’t think these UFO nuke reports are fluff; they sure caught my attention because they relate to national security.”

Underscoring, once again, the old quote by President Truman: “The only thing new in the world is the history we don’t know.”

Obviously there’s one helluva lot of that.

The Oregon Bob Case: We're Back, Alive and Well (Now The Real Work Begins)

Oregon Bob Case Photo Above The Fog
By Johnny Anonymous

8-9-10

Johnny Anonymous     Well.. Alive at least...

We certainly appreciate the emails and other 'messages' in regards to our disappearance, it can be told now that we were on a "special assignment" in Oregon to investigate and if possible debunk outrageous claims being made of 'Unusual UFO Phenomena'. This supposedly has been ongoing for about 8+ years or so and being experienced/witnessed by several people on numerous occasions.

I was fortunate enough to have as my companion my esteem colleague and friend Frank Warren of the website UFO Chronicles, and a long-time UFO researcher that was responsible for the release of the 1942 'Battle of LA' UFO photograph to the world (just one of many of his 'pet projects').

We just recently returned back to California, making it back alive contrary to the many sorted rumors of us being sucked into a dimensional vortex to the other side. As soon as Frank and I get some much needed sleep and rest, we will both be posting our results of our preliminary investigation. There are literally hours and hours of both audio and video (not to mention witness testimony) that needs to be analyzed and scrutinized. Although our presence is no longer in Oregon investigating, the real work starts "NOW" in the processing of said data gathered and seeing what path it takes us down, (hopefully something more than anecdotal).

So please accept my apologies for my ongoing absence while we (Frank and I both) get knee-deep into this analysis. I wont be on much as I don't want any distractions until we feel were ready to release what we have gathered...

So Stay Tuned (and be patient) . . .

TONIGHT, FRIDAY JULY 2
The Joiner Report: Live From Roswell! Jesse Marcel & Dennis Balthaser with Host Frank Warren

Jesse Marcel & Dennis Balthaser on The Joiner Report
By Frank Warren
The UFO Chronicles
6-2810

In recognition of the upcoming 63rd anniversary of what has become known as The Roswell Incident, and corresponding festival in the city of the same name, I take great pride in announcing that my special guest for this week’s Joiner Report (Friday July 2nd) will be none other then Jesse Marcel Jr.

Jesse, like his father is a great American patriot: that said, no one could have predicted that after joining the Navy in 1962—42 years later he would be fighting in the Iraq War at the youthful age of 68!! Jesse in 2004 was called back to active duty; he flew over 225 hours as a flight surgeon for the 189th Attack Helicopter Battalion. He retired (again) as a full-bird Colonel.

The Roswell LegacyAlong with Jesse’s many accolades he has added “author” to the list; in 2007, after I wrote a review for his book, The Roswell Legacy, he explained to me that he had desired to write the book for some time, wanting to “set the record straight” in regards to not only his involvement and perception of what took place on the Foster Ranch in the summer of ‘47, but more importantly to give voice to his father and the actual facts as they happened. Being reminded of his mortality while in combat in Iraq, the book would soon come to fruition.

Anyone who has read my review knows that Jesse’s book didn’t disappoint and I highly recommend it! Jesse details his experience as not only the son of the first military officer present at the 1947 crash site, but as a witness and handler himself to some of the crash debris. He completes the tome by sharing his involvement in research up to present day and how The Roswell Incident has affected his life and that of his family.

This Friday’s show will be a special treat for me as I have the utmost respect for Jesse, and his father and am honored to be in his company; however, it doesn’t end there, as good friend and colleague, “Dennis Balthaser” will be on in the second half of the show.

Dennis is considered to be one of the top experts on The Roswell Incident, having moved to the town many years ago to pursue research. He is a popular, sought out speaker on the subject and along with his award winning web site, www.truthseekeratroswell.com he has appeared on numerous television and radio shows; as is the case every year during the Roswell festival, Dennis will be giving lectures over the long weekend; it’s with great appreciation that he has agreed to take time out of his busy schedule to join us this Friday night.

Show time: Friday,July 2, 2010

  • 7:00 - 9:00 pm Pacific
  • 9:00 - 11:00 p.m. Central
