Claims Of UFOs Near Space Station is Crappola, says NASA

For years, UFO hunters have waged an ongoing battle with NASA, the United States’ space agency. Armed with nothing more than an internet connection, anyone can spend hours on end, searching for unexplained objects that might fly through the view finder of one of several HD video cameras mounted on the International Space Station.

There are numerous examples over several years of where ISS watchers claim to have seen, recorded and posted YouTube videos of UFOs, hoping to convince the public that alien ships often visit the ISS.

When The Huffington Post reached out to NASA regarding recent video captures of alleged UFOs at the ISS, an agency spokesperson sent us this statement:
No unidentified objects in the popular sense have been seen from the International Space Station. Reflections from station windows, the spacecraft structure itself or lights from Earth commonly appear as artifacts in photos and videos from the orbiting laboratory.

Video Feed of Mysterious 'UFO' Explained by NASA

NASA is offering an explanation for the space video controversy that has some UFO believers up in arms.
By CBS News
7-14-16
The video appears to show an object entering the Earth's atmosphere before NASA's live feed from the International Space Station abruptly cuts off. Some conspiracy theorists were quick to suggest that NASA was trying to hide something.

In the video, posted on YouTube July 9 by UFO hunter Streetcap1, you can see the bright object descending towards Earth; then the feed stops

... But NASA says there's a fairly mundane explanation for why the feed was interrupted.

"The video is from our High Definition Earth Viewing (HDEV) experiment aboard the ISS, which is mounted externally on the ISS," NASA spokesperson Daniel Huot told CNET via e-mail. "This experiment includes several commercial HD video cameras aimed at the Earth, which are enclosed in a pressurized and temperature-controlled housing. The experiment is on automatic controls to cycle through the various cameras."

Huot continued: "The station regularly passes out of range of the Tracking and Data Relay Satellites (TDRS) used to send and receive video, voice and telemetry from the station," he said. "For video, whenever we lose signal (video comes down on our higher bandwidth, called KU) the cameras will show a blue screen (indicating no signal) or a preset video slate." ...

Mystery Revealed In Astronaut Kelly's UFO Photo

When astronaut Scott Kelly snapped a stunning photo of south India on the night of Nov. 15, Internet chatter speculated over what appears to be something else in the picture above India -- shown in the closeup above.

Kelly, who recently broke the record for longest time spent in space by an American, tweeted the picture back to Earth from the International Space Station. UFO hunters came out of the woodwork, alleging he also photographed a bright, tubular-shaped UFO in the upper right of the image (as seen above).

[...]

That's right -- the UFO is, in fact, a UHF antenna, part of the International Space Station, which is probably why Kelly didn't notice it as anything unusual.

The really odd thing about all of this is that UFOs-at-the-space-station aren't new. What initially seem to be visitors from far away are mostly space debris, window reflections, or parts of the space station that are illuminated in unusual ways. [...]

ISS Films Sprites and Trolls At The Edge Of Space

By spaceweather.com

We all know what comes out of the bottom of thunderclouds: lightning. But rarely do we see what comes out of the top. On August 10th, astronauts on board the International Space Station were perfectly positioned to observe red sprites dancing atop a cluster of storms in Mexico. They snapped this incredible photo (above).

This shows just how high sprites can go. The photo shows their red forms reaching all the way from the thunderstorm below to a layer of green airglow some 100 km above Earth's surface. This means sprites touch the edge of space, alongside auroras, meteors and noctilucent clouds. They are a true space weather phenomenon.

A few minutes after the astronauts saw the sprites, they spotted a related creature--a "Troll." ...

Members of the Expedition 44 crew had to move out of the way of satellite debris late in the evening of Saturday, July 25. The most recent reminder that the environment above our world is becoming increasingly cluttered, did not impact crew safety or operations and, in fact, it might even get the station’s current residents a little ahead in terms of scheduled tasks. . . .

A private spaceflight company took one small step for asteroid mining this week with the launch of its first spacecraft to test technology that may one day help tap into the riches of the solar system.

The Arkyd 3 Reflight spacecraft, a small satellite built by the space-mining company Planetary Resources, launched from the International Space Station on Thursday (July 16), beginning a 90-day mission to test the avionics, control systems and software needed to make asteroid mining possible.

Planetary Resources first tried to launch a version of the satellite into orbit last October, but that spacecraft was lost when the commercial Antares rocket carrying it and supplies for the space station exploded shortly after liftoff.

UFO conspiracy theorists are a-twitter after NASA cut off a live video feed from the space station when suspicious flickering lights came into view – and then flew away. Director of the International UFO Bureau Hayden Hewes, says it's more of the same from NASA.

"They can't let the general public know that there's somebody more intelligent, it'll upset too many beliefs."

Was it aliens, or just a trick of the light?

UFO expert Jim Marrs, yes that's his real name, says NASA is routinely suspicious.

"NASA says that they erased all of the original footage of the 1969 Moon landing; so it makes one wonder, what are they covering up?"

A mysterious red beam of light has been seen outside of the International Space Station.

The red light was witnessed at around 09:20 AM GMT on the 5 December through the live webcam that's placed on the outside of the space station.

Naturally the appearance of a strange red light has prompted some to claim that it must -- of course -- be a UFO trying to communicate with Earth.

Others have suggested it was simply an astronaut on the Space Station having some fun with a laser pointer. . . .

An unmanned Russian supply ship launched toward the International Space Station early Wednesday (Oct. 29), beginning a six-hour cargo delivery that comes one day after a private U.S. rocket exploded while attempting a similar mission.

The robotic Progress 57 spacecraft blasted off from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan atop a Russian Soyuz rocket at 3:09 a.m. EDT (0709 GMT) to begin its space station mission. The spacecraft is carrying nearly 3 tons of supplies for the space station's Expedition 41 crew and is expected to link up with the orbiting lab at 9:09 a.m. EDT (1309 GMT).

Russia's successful Progress launch followed the disappointing failure of a U.S. commercial Antares rocket one day earlier. Built by the Virginia-based company Orbital Sciences Corporation, the Antares rocket exploded about 10 seconds after lifting off from its launch pad at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island, Virginia. An investigation into the launch failure is ongoing. . . .

The private American rocket that exploded shortly after liftoff Tuesday evening (Oct. 28) was powered partly by an engine built to get cosmonauts to the moon in the 1960s.

Orbital Sciences Corp.'s two-stage Antares rocket crashed in a fiery heap just seconds after launching from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia on Tuesday, ending an attempted cargo run to the International Space Station just seconds after it began.

Antares' first stage uses two AJ26 engines, which are refurbished variants of the NK-33 built by the Soviet Union for its ill-fated N-1 moon rocket during the height of the space race. While it's unclear at the moment whether or not the AJ26 played any role in Tuesday's mishap, the engines' age and provenance has already stirred debate, as well as a bit of criticism. . . .

As two astronauts aboard the International Space Station made some outside repairs, a UFO appears to hover in the background, as seen on a video released by NASA.

For about five seconds, an unidentified object (which we can presumably say is flying) is seen in the camera frame between the ISS and Earth where, just seconds earlier, no mysterious object could be spotted.

Not surprisingly, NASA is silent on the mysterious object's appearance. . . .

Astronauts looking down on Earth from the International Space Station in June were left scratching their heads when they spotted a “strange pattern of spikes" crossing Siberia's Kulunda Steppe.

The astronauts were so puzzled that they called down to Houston to ask for an explanation, according to NASA. But only recently have scientists at the agency's Johnson Space Center been able to explain what the astronauts were looking at when they saw the dark green spikes stretching over the rural landscape. . . .

A husband and wife in the Lincolnshire, England city of Lincoln were watching the skies for the International Space Station (ISS) on the night of Thursday, June 5. But the couple’s sky watching turned out to be more exciting than they had anticipated when a UFO appeared in the sky.

This couple was reportedly gazing skyward around 10:00 p.m. The wife, Gail Phillips, explained to the Lincolnshire Echo that they spotted the ISS, but then they noticed a UFO just hovering in the sky. She explains, “We watched it for about 30 seconds before we thought we would record it . . . We thought it was too dark to be a remote helicopter and then it started to move backwards which was a little strange.”

Spacecraft Being Sanitized

By Mark J. Miller

Whether it's Martians in War of the Worlds or a telekinetic visitor in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, science fiction is filled with aliens making their way to Earth.
In science fact, though, there's greater concern that Earth-dwellers—specifically bacteria and microorganisms—could arrive at extraterrestrial destinations.

As NASA sends rovers to Mars, plans a trip to Jupiter's icy moon Europa, and looks for an ocean on Saturn's moon Enceladus, the hope is to find life-forms on those interstellar bodies. To ensure that doesn't include forms that originated on Earth—and that the new environment isn't compromised the way Earth ecosystems can be by invasive species or infectious diseases—NASA is now thoroughly cleaning its space-bound vessels.

The extreme heat of takeoff, the cold of space, and the speed of spacecraft are generally enough to kill bacteria and microorganisms. But scientists have discovered that a few hardy ones can stick around.

"A surprisingly large variety of organisms are able to survive a trip through space," says NASA Planetary Protection Officer Catharine Conley. "Experiments to put microbes, lichens, plant seeds, and even small animals on the outside of the International Space Station have demonstrated survival for years." . . .

The main result -- for those of us on the sidelines of space research and commerce -- has been a few days of utterly beautiful images of Earth.

Inevitably, it has also been something of a treasure trove for UFO hunters. A brief search on YouTube and conspiracy theory sites reveals a bunch of different sightings of unidentified objects - some mere flashes in space, others quite hilariously huge - which they claim are aliens above the Earth. . . .

In 2005, astronaut Leroy Chiao was commander of the International Space Station for six and a half months. During a spacewalk with cosmonaut Salizhan Sharipov, the two were installing navigation antennas. They were 230 miles above Earth, traveling at over 17,000 miles per hour, when something unusual caught Chiao's eye.

"I saw some lights that seemed to be in a line and it was almost like an upside-down check mark, and I saw them fly by and thought it was awfully strange," Chiao told The Huffington Post.

Chiao's fellow spacewalker, Sharipov, hadn't seen the lights because he was facing the opposite direction.

This experience, recreated in the video below (and still image above), launches "NASA's Unexplained Files," one of several programs presented as part of Science Channel's week-long "Are We Alone?" series, beginning today, March 2. . . .

International Space Station astronauts begin series of high-stakes spacewalks

By WILLIAM HARWOOD
CBS News
12-21-13

Astronauts Rick Mastracchio and Mike Hopkins switched their spacesuits to battery power early Saturday, kicking off the first in a series of spacewalks to replace a refrigerator-size ammonia pump assembly aboard the International Space Station in a high-stakes attempt to restore a critical coolant loop to normal operation.

Floating in the station's Quest airlock module, the astronauts began the planned six-and-a-half-hour excursion at 7:01 a.m. EST as the space station sailed 250 miles above the Atlantic Ocean approaching Africa.

"Quite a view," Hopkins marveled as he floated outside the airlock to begin his first spacewalk.

"Yeah, watch that first step," joked Mastracchio, making his seventh EVA, shorthand for extravehicular activity.

For identification, Mastracchio, call sign EV-1, is wearing a suit with red stripes and using helmet camera No. 20. Hopkins, EV-2, is wearing an unmarked suit with helmet camera No. 18. This is the 175th spacewalk devoted to station assembly and maintenance since construction began in 1998 and the ninth so far this year.

The spacewalks were ordered after a critical valve in one of the space station's two coolant loops malfunctioned last week, resulting in lower-than-allowable temperatures.

While coolant loop A remained partially operational, flight controllers were forced to shut down a variety of systems in the station's forward modules, including experiment hardware, to keep those systems from over heating. Coolant loop B remained fully functional.

Engineers attempted to resolve the problem using a software patch to precisely control the position of another valve in the coolant system, and thus the temperature of the ammonia in loop A. But NASA managers ultimately opted for a series of spacewalks to replace the ammonia pump module where the suspect flow control valve is located. . . .
