UFOs and Nukes Researcher Robert Hastings to Appear on Coast to Coast AM

UFOs and Nukes Researcher Robert Hastings to Appear on Coast to Coast AM - www.theufochronicles.com

I will be interviewed on Coast to Coast AM by journalist George Knapp this Sunday, November 17th, at 10 p.m. Pacific Time. During the two-hour segment, I will be discussing testimony provided to me by US Air Force veterans who were involved in UFO-related incidents at nuclear weapons sites over the years.

Some of those individuals—former ICBM launch officers—have reported occasions when a UFO temporarily activated their missiles, requiring them to flip an “Inhibit Switch” to disrupt the unauthorized launch countdown sequence. (In 1994, Knapp surreptitiously secured still-classified Soviet Army documents confirming at least one such UFO-caused missile-activation incident in the USSR, in 1982.)

Other retired USAF officers who I’ve interviewed have revealed incidents when their missiles suddenly dropped offline during a UFO incursion, thereby rendering them completely inoperable. In short, UFOs—or UAPs, as the US government now refers to them—have demonstrated a longstanding, widespread, and ongoing surveillance of, and occasional interference with, nuclear weapons.

In the spring of 2023, the Defense Department’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) interviewed eleven of “my” veterans who I had introduced to the group at AARO Director Sean Kirkpatrick’s request. During the Knapp interview Sunday night I will be discussing what occurred during and following those interactions. Spoiler alert: Ultimately, the veterans were extremely unhappy about the outcome.

Former AATIP director Lue Elizondo has publicly confirmed the existence of a UFO-Nukes Connection in several interviews and podcasts over the past few years and, most recently, referred to ongoing UAP interference with America’s “nuclear equities” during his testimony before Congress earlier this week.

My research findings are summarized in my book, UFOs and Nukes: Extraordinary Encounters at Nuclear Weapons Sites, which is available in print/ebook and audiobook formats.

Robert Hastings to Appear on Coast to Coast AM with George Knapp

UFOs and Nukes researcher Robert Hastings will be George Knapp’s guest on Coast to Coast AM on Sunday, July 18th at 10 pm Pacific Time (1 am Eastern July 19th). Hastings will discuss the recently-released UAP Task Force report and its failure to

mention any of the documented UFO incursions at nuclear weapons sites over the past 75 years.

Hastings says, “While the highly-publicized military pilot UAP sightings featured in the report are undoubtedly important, focusing exclusively on them while not acknowledging even one of the great many UFO incursions at ICBM sites, nuclear weapons storage areas and test sites, as well as fissile materials production facilities, only perpetuates the longstanding cover-up by the US government of crucial national security-related UFO activity.”

On September 27, 2010, Hastings co-sponsored the “UFOs and Nukes” press conference in Washington D.C., which CNN streamed live. At that event, seven US Air Force veterans discussed their involvement in UFO-related incidents at Minuteman nuclear missile sites, including occasions when the ICBMs malfunctioned just as a disc-shaped object hovered over their launch control facility.

Since 1973, Hastings has interviewed 167 US military veterans regarding their knowledge of such events during the Cold War era and beyond. Interviews with most of those veterans appear in Hastings’ book, UFOs and Nukes: Extraordinary Encounters at Nuclear Weapons Sites. His documentary film on the UFO-Nukes Connection further examines the pattern of UFO activity at US and Soviet missile sites.

Significantly, key individuals associated with the Pentagon’s recently-revealed UFO study group, the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP), have confirmed the link between UFOs and our nukes. Former US Senator Harry Reid, whose behind-the-scenes efforts resulted in AATIP’s creation, has stated that large numbers of American ICBMs have been “disabled” at various Air Force missile bases over the years, something confirmed by former AATIP director Luis Elizondo. More recently, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Intelligence Christopher Mellon has also publicly discussed UFO activity at American nuclear sites.

While Hastings applauds the UAP Task Force report as a major departure from the US government’s longstanding policy of denial and obfuscation, he believes that Congress needs to investigate the ongoing nuclear-related UFO incursions, given their obvious importance and relevance to any meaningful public disclosure of the UFO reality.

Self-Confessed UFO Abductees Robert Hastings and Dr. Bob Jacobs to Appear on Coast to Coast AM

CONFESSION: Our Hidden Alien Encounters Revealed

UFOs and Nukes researcher Robert Hastings and military whistleblower Dr. Bob Jacobs have recently acknowledged their previously concealed status as ‘experiencers’ in their newly-released, co-authored book, CONFESSION: Our Hidden Alien Encounters Revealed. (#ad) The pair will be interviewed by investigative reporter George Knapp on his Coast to Coast AM radio show this Sunday, November 17th, at 10 p.m. Pacific Time (1 a.m. Eastern Time, Monday, November 18th).

Since 1973, Hastings’ investigations have focused on UFO incursions at nuclear weapons sites, as revealed in declassified

government documents and the testimony of scores of former or retired military personnel whom he has interviewed. His September 27, 2010 press conference in Washington D.C., during which seven U.S. Air Force veterans discussed their involvement in such incidents, was live-streamed by CNN and favorably covered by other major media organizations worldwide.

Although not a participant in that press event, Dr. Jacobs has become well-known after revealing his knowledge of perhaps the most dramatic nukes-related case on record. Dubbed the Big Sur UFO Incident, it involved a domed, disc-shaped craft being inadvertently filmed during an ICBM test launch at Vandenberg AFB, California, in September 1964. Amazingly, the UFO was seen to chase and then circle the separated dummy nuclear warhead in flight over the Pacific Ocean—before shooting it down with weaponized beams of light! Although debunkers have unsuccessfully attempted to discredit the case by misstating or ignoring the evidence, another former U.S. Air Force officer, Dr. Florenz Mansmann, has confirmed Dr. Jacobs’ revelations and states that the CIA confiscated the film of the nearly unbelievable event.

Despite Hastings’ and Jacobs’ nuts-and-bolts approach to the UFO phenomenon—exclusively investigating and reporting military-related cases—over time each has independently experienced bizarre and frightening encounters with what they have concluded are non-human entities. Understanding that publicly confessing these experiences would negatively impact their credibility—among UFO skeptics and proponents alike—they’ve remained silent for decades. Until now.

While the authors readily admit that they cannot provide irrefutable proof for their claims, they nevertheless assert that their ongoing encounters are physically real and not explainable by prosaic scenarios such as sleep paralysis, vivid dreaming, or an overactive imagination. Consequently, they are among the steadily growing number of humans worldwide who have reported experiencing what appear to be face-to-face interactions with alien beings.

MJ-12—The Hoax That Quickly Became a Disinformation Operation (Redux)

MJ-12—The Hoax That Quickly Became a Disinformation
Following my recent appearance on Coast to Coast (6/20/16) I have received a great many emails from persons asking me to elaborate on one subject or another, including the MJ-12 affair. Given this, I hereby offer an article I wrote in 2014:
Stan Friedman and I once had a brief face-to-face debate about the Majestic-12 (MJ-12) documents, as I was helping him move his luggage from his hotel room to the lobby, to await the taxi to the airport, following the III World UFO Forum in Curitiba, Brazil in June 2009, at which we both spoke.

One of those documents, the key Eisenhower Briefing Document (EBD), purports to be a Top Secret report to president-elect Dwight Eisenhower, prepared by Rear Admiral Roscoe Hillenkoetter, in which the Roswell Incident—the recovery of an alien spaceship and the

bodies of its crew—is outlined for the soon-to-be new chief executive.

Along with this earth-shattering news, Eisenhower is told of the existence of a Top Secret group, the Majestic 12 or Majik 12, a “Research and Development Intelligence” operation whose 12 members oversee basically everything related to the case.

After I pressed him on the point, Friedman actually agreed with me that the obscure elements in the EBD—which he publicly claims prove its authenticity—could have been researched by counterintelligence personnel, military or civilian, and planted in the “document” to lend it an air of legitimacy. This includes the mention of UFO skeptic Dr. Donald Menzel as a member of MJ-12—whose covert relationship with the National Security Agency was only exposed after the EBD was made public—as well as other items.

In other words, if the MJ-12 affair is a disinformation scheme involving a counterintelligence group, and not just a simple hoax—as I maintain—the arcane aspects of the Eisenhower Briefing Document (and Cutler-Twining Memo and Truman-Forrestal Memo) that Friedman holds up as evidence of their authenticity, might instead be explained by the spooks who created them having done their homework. If their task was to muddy the waters, so to speak, certainly they would have been allowed access to various relevant historical materials that would have assisted them in the creation of passable forgeries.

As one of the first investigators of MJ-12, who helped expose its bogus origins—together with Barry Greenwood, Kevin Randle, and the late Bob Todd—I have detailed information about the early manifestations of the caper. My widely-circulated March 1, 1989 paper, “The MJ-12 Affair: Facts, Questions, Comments” is available at www.sacred-texts.com.

● While Greenwood and Randle believe that a simple hoax, designed to make money, was perpetrated by researcher Bill Moore and U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI) Special Agent Richard Doty, I contend the available evidence strongly suggests that the MJ-12 fraud, while originating as a hoax, was quickly co-opted by AFOSI and perhaps other intelligence groups, as a means to disinform/misdirect ufologists and the public-at-large, regarding the nature and extent of the U.S. government’s involvement with the UFO phenomenon.

I am fully aware that Stan Friedman will never agree with this scenario—and may claim that our conversation in Brazil never happened—so I am merely going to itemize the following for the benefit of others who have an open mind about the subject:
According to files donated to MUFON by the late Bob Pratt, the name “MAJIK 12” was assigned to a proposed work of fiction about UFOs, the official cover-up of them, and one intelligence agent’s quest to expose the facts. The novel was to be co-authored by journalist Pratt and researcher Bill Moore, probably with the assistance of Richard Doty.

All of this was discussed some three years before the first supposedly real Majestic-12/Majik-12 “document” surfaced. MAJIK 12 was the book’s working title; IAC, for Identified Alien Craft, was an alternate title. However, at some point, The Aquarius Project was unilaterally selected as the title by Moore. The terms “Project Aquarius” and “IAC” later appeared in the allegedly real Majestic-12 documents, as did “EBE” for Extraterrestrial Biological Entity, another term associated with the proposed fictional work.

● Two years before the MJ-12 documents were released to the public, Moore suggested to researcher Brad Sparks that fake documents relating to the Roswell UFO recovery be created and disseminated, the idea being that military veterans with a knowledge of the event would be enticed to come forward with their stories, thereby breaking the case wide open. Sparks states that he strongly recommended that Moore not do it.

● The undeveloped roll of film containing images of the EDB and Truman-Forrestal (TF) documents was mailed to Moore’s associate Jaime Shandera from Albuquerque, New Mexico, coincidentally the location of Kirtland AFB—where OSI agent Richard Doty worked.

● In April 2009, the late Gabe Valdez, a retired New Mexico State Policeman famous for his cattle mutilation work, told me that fellow state trooper Richard Doty had confessed to him that he had forged “lots” of UFO-related documents while working as an OSI agent. Doty became a New Mexico State Policeman after retiring from the Air Force in 1988.

Doty’s fraudulent “Craig Weitzel letter”, “1977 Ellsworth AFB incident document”, and “Aquarius Telex”—the first document to surface that actually mentioned MJ-12—were exposed in the 1980s. Three fakes hardly constitute “lots” of forgeries. What other “documents” did Doty foist on ufology and the rest of the world?
Gabe Valdez asked me not to tape our 2009 conversation or to quote him publicly; now that he is dead, I feel I can do so.

●In May 2009, I posted various MJ-12-related statements on a blog, at one point referring to Doty as “a government disinformation agent who forged documents.” On May 24, 2009, Doty emailed me, angrily saying, “A simple fact, Mr. Hastings, everything I did during my intelligence days were [sic] sanctioned.”
This is classic Doty, notorious for his frequent grammatical and spelling errors. I note here that the MJ-12 documents have a number of such errors sprinkled throughout them.

Not that Doty is necessarily a candidate for the forgery of the EBD in particular; its somewhat complex content required a level of sophistication arguably beyond Doty’s rather limited abilities. Instead, higher-level intelligence types, and Bill Moore himself, must be considered to be high on the list of persons who might be responsible for its creation.

Remember, Moore once told researcher Lee Graham that he was an intelligence operative, and even showed Graham an ID badge that Graham said was “identical” in appearance to the badges shown to him by two members of the Defense Investigative Service (DIS) who had once visited him.

When I published Graham’s comments in 1989, Moore quickly said that he had only been joking with the hapless researcher and that the badge was actually a laminated MUFON field investigator’s card. However, Graham remains adamant that the badge he was shown was a genuine government ID card.

But if Doty is not responsible for the creation of the EBD, the ridiculous mumbo jumbo found in the so-called “MJ-5 Memo” is right up his alley. On October 14, 1988, Doty appeared anonymously (back-lit and voice-altered) as “Falcon” on the absurd TV farce UFO Cover-up Live!, together with USAF intelligence officer Capt. Robert M. Collins, who also appeared anonymously as “Condor”. The pair claimed to be high-level intelligence insiders who knew about multiple UFO crashes, live aliens being held captive by the U.S. government, and other such fare. Apparently the aliens liked strawberry ice cream and Tibetan music, according to Doty and Collins.

In November 1987, the same Capt. Robert Collins showed Linda Moulton Howe a ring-binder full of MJ-12 documents at his home in Albuquerque. According to Howe, Collins had been “frantically” trying to reach her so that he could present those supposedly important files. The EBD was prominently featured, as was the MJ-5 Memo, together with another memorandum that mentioned the live aliens held at Los Alamos—among other items.

Howe swallowed it all, of course, soon sharing information about the bogus evidence with ufologists and the public, following-up on her earlier “revelations” about alleged secret U.S./alien treaties, underground alien bases, and other such disclosures—all of which had been provided to her by OSI Special Agent Doty.
In 2009, Collins denied showing documents to Howe (and John Lear) at his house in 1987. Fortunately, I recorded my conversation with Howe less than a year after the event and she described the goings-on in detail. A summary of all of this, as well as my telephone transcript, may be read in my Operation Bird Droppings article.

According to his self-written bio at Amazon.com, appearing with a summary of his book, Exempt From Disclosure, Robert Collins is a “former Air Force Intelligence Officer, Capt, O-3 (Chief Analyst/Scientist in theoretical Physics holding a Top Secret/SCI clearance) at the Foreign Technology Division (FTD)...Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, with an extensive background in Aircraft Avionics Systems, Ground Communications, and Engineering Physics (graduate school—Electro-Optics, Plasma, and Nuclear Physics) totaling over 22 years…”

Gee, not a single word from Collins about his appearing on a national television program masquerading as a “high-level intelligence source, code-named Condor” who also “frantically” disseminated disinformation relating to MJ-12.

Summarizing here, in the early days of the ruse, two of the leading proponents for the legitimacy of the now-discredited MJ-12 material were a counterintelligence OSI agent, who later confessed to forging UFO-related documents, and a positive intelligence officer who willingly posed as something he was not—someone having intimate knowledge about various crashed UFOs and captured aliens being held by the U.S. government.

Try as he may, Stan Friedman cannot credibly distance the supposedly “good” MJ-12 documents—EBD, CT, TF—from the “bad” ones that were circulating in the 1980s. They were all lumped together and presented as equally important and legitimate by two Air Force intelligence operatives—clearly acting as disinformation agents—who were aggressively foisting them on well-meaning but gullible people such as Linda Howe.

Once the shenanigans perpetrated by the Kirtland AFB Cabal were effectively exposed, by Greenwood, Todd and myself, Bill Moore saw the writing on the wall and finally acknowledged much of what we had written.

During his infamous “confession” speech, at the MUFON conference in Las Vegas, on July 1, 1989, Moore said, “Disinformation is a strange and bizarre game. Those who play it are completely aware that an operation’s success is dependent upon dropping information upon a target, or ‘mark,’ in such a way that the person will accept it as truth and will repeat, and even defend it to others as if it were true. Once this has been accomplished, the work of the counterintelligence specialists is complete. They can simply withdraw in the confidence that the dirty work of spreading their poisonous seeds will be done by others.”

Linda Howe and others—including Stanton Friedman—certainly did their part in the game, helping to create a mythology that endures today.

As I wrote earlier, the available evidence strongly suggests that while the MJ-12 Affair began as a legitimate money-making project, involving the writing of a novel, it eventually became a hoax, involving forged documents—with money again being the objective, resulting from various related schemes—before finally morphing into a disinformation ploy orchestrated by intelligence and counterintelligence groups within the U.S. Air Force.

Today

I am distressed that the MJ-12 debate (actually, debacle) continues to have ramifications 30 years later, perpetually polluting the legitimate UFO research database.

For example, MJ-12 was prominently featured during the Citizens Hearing on Disclosure, held in Washington D.C. in May 2013. Linda Moulton Howe breathlessly characterized the MJ-12-related SOM 1-01 Special Operations Manual—which directs military personnel how to recover crashed UFOs and dead aliens—as having “stood the test of time”. Hardly! Military document expert and longtime UFO researcher Jan Aldrich has discovered over 50 factual errors and/or discrepancies in military protocol in the so-called “manual”.

Another high-profile personage in ufology, self-described “historian” Richard Dolan, has repeatedly vouched for the legitimacy of the MJ-12 materials in various UFO “documentaries” on television.

And Robert and Ryan Wood, at their Majestic Documents website, still regularly churn out pro-MJ-12 “evidence” and commentary. As I pointedly said to them, from the podium at the 2012 Society for Scientific Exploration conference, if one is going to have any hope of deciphering the U.S. government’s covert response to UFOs, one must adhere to the fundamental principles underlying academic scholarship or, at least, traditional investigative journalism, to figure out what is real, as opposed to what is not.

In other words, relying only on authenticated documents and vetted witness testimony when evaluating historical developments. In response, the Woods just stared at their shoes and said nothing.

Given that the MJ-12 proponents routinely ignore this valid advice, and spout off incessantly about their supposedly-insightful “findings”, it’s no wonder that the bullshit typed-up by OSI Agent Doty, con artist Bill Moore and, later on, hoaxer Tim Cooper, has only gained ground on the Internet over the years, at least among the less-discriminating members of the public.

At least Cooper has now completely disavowed the MJ-12 2.0 “documents” that he was actively disseminating a few years ago. Oh, you didn’t know about that? See my “Operation Bird Droppings” article addendum. Regardless, questions about Cooper’s possible role in creating those forged files remain unanswered.

Jeez, what a colossal waste of everyone’s time! There are legitimate areas in ufology that go begging for attention by qualified researchers. It’s nothing short of pathetic that so much effort has been spent on the MJ-12 Affair, especially when the basic facts about its dubious origins and early machinations have been well researched and publicized for years.

To the reader, I say this: Please do your homework. The facts are indeed available, if one is willing to take the time to discover them. Start by asking yourself whether any “evidence” offered by the MJ-12 proponents would meet the standards of academic or journalistic investigative research. Can even a single MJ-12 “document” be proved to be genuine, by any accepted definition of that word?

Bizarrely, Stan Friedman has recently asserted that provenance—the chronology of the ownership, custody or location of a historical object—is not even an issue when it comes to analyzing the MJ-12 documents! Would any academician or investigative journalist dare make such a claim about a disputed document that has mysteriously appeared out of nowhere, if he/she hoped to have any credibility at all after doing so? Of course not!

The great many documents underlying my own UFO-Nukes Connection research can be verifiably traced to a given government department or agency. Can the MJ-12 proponents honestly make that claim? No, they cannot. All they can offer are their opinions about how it might be possible for these supposed documents to be real.

Whoopee...

For the record, I personally believe that the Roswell Incident—the secret recovery of an alien spaceship and the bodies of its crew—did in fact take place. I recommend a review of the on-the-record statements by the late U.S. Air Force Brigadier General Arthur E. Exon, as presented at roswellproof.homestead.com. While having only an indirect knowledge of the incident and its aftermath, acquired from some of the military participants who were involved in the operation, Exon’s revelations are far more insightful and valuable than anything emerging from the MJ-12 fiasco.

UFO and Nukes - The Secret Link Revealed (Still 1)

Researcher Robert Hastings To Discuss His New Documentary Film re UFOs and Nukes on Coast To Coast AM Tonight with Host George Knapp

By Robert Hastings
11-30-14

Over the past 41 years, I have interviewed more than 150 U.S. military veterans regarding their knowledge of UFO incursions at American nuclear weapons sites, including incidents during which ICBMs malfunctioned, just as a disc-shaped object hovered over them.

CNN streamed my September 27, 2010 press conference in Washington D.C. at which seven of the veterans discussed their involvement in those or similar events:

My film, UFOs and Nukes: The Secret Link Revealed, is currently in production and nearing completion. However, our funds will be exhausted before all of the work can be finished. Some of the computer-generated animation, post-production audio, and musical scoring is on hold. My colleagues and I estimate that an additional $25,000 will be needed to wrap up the project.

The purpose of this film is public education. The information I have gathered over the past four decades confirms the reality of UFO activity at American and Soviet nuclear weapons sites. The specifics, as reported by the ex-military witnesses and declassified documents, are both stunning and tremendously important.

Significantly, UFO incursions at American ICBM sites have continued to occur long after the end of the Cold War. On October 23, 2010, at F.E. Warren AFB, Wyoming, communications with launch officers operating 50 Minuteman III missiles were temporarily disrupted. According to my then-active duty U.S. Air Force sources, a huge cigar-shaped UFO was observed during the incident.

It’s clear that the American government does not plan to reveal these amazing and perhaps ominous developments any time soon. Therefore, a grassroots effort must be made to acquaint people everywhere with a situation that has been successfully kept secret for decades.

UFOs and Nukes Extraordinary Encounters at Nuclear Weapons SitesWhile my 2008 book, UFOs and Nukes: Extraordinary Encounters at Nuclear Weapons Sites, has introduced this potentially paradigm-altering information to thousands of readers, a widely-distributed film on the subject will reach millions worldwide.

Rather than launching a Kickstarter or Indiegogo campaign, which would involve unnecessary expenses, we have decided to implement a simplified public appeal. Those who would like to support this effort, or more information, may go to my Support Our Film webpage.

Knowledge is Power. If you believe that this campaign should continue, please help us Spread the Word by going to my website and making a contribution.

Press Release
11-16-12
Noted UFO researcher and author Robert Hastings will be interviewed by award-winning journalist George Knapp on the Coast To Coast AM radio program this Sunday, November 18, 2012.

During the program’s first hour, retired U.S. Air Force Colonel Charles Halt, former Deputy Base Commander of the RAF Bentwaters airbase in England, will discuss his involvement in the famous UFO-related incidents which occurred there in December 1980, including an appearance by one of the mysterious craft at the base’s nuclear Weapons Storage Area (WSA).

Halt overheard radio chatter from Security Police guards at the depot, saying that laser-like beams of light were being directed by the UFO down into or near the weapons bunker complex. This is the colonel’s first appearance on Coast to Coast.

During the program’s remaining three hours, Hastings will provide an overview of the UFO-Nukes Connection, which has been convincingly established by declassified U.S. government documents and the testimony of 130 military veterans interviewed by the researcher over the past 39 years.

Hastings is best known for his September 27, 2010 “UFOs and Nukes” press conference in Washington D.C., at which six former or retired U.S. Air Force officers and one former enlisted man discussed UFO activity at nuclear weapons sites during the Cold War era.

According to two of the participants—a former ICBM launch officer, Captain Bob Salas, and a former targeting officer, Captain Bob Jamison—UFOs caused ten Minuteman missiles to malfunction at Malmstrom AFB’s Oscar Flight on March 24, 1967.

CNN streamed the global media-covered event and the full-length video may be viewed below.

Hastings’ mid-October research trip to Montana uncovered several UFO sightings, as recently as September 21, 2012, reported by civilians living near ICBM launch facilities. The witnesses say that a dramatic increase in Air Force security patrols has been observed in the wake of the sightings, together with the presence of large numbers of missile maintenance vans.

In short, something significant has apparently occurred in the region in recent weeks, suggesting that nukes-related UFO activity did not end decades ago but is a current phenomenon.

UFO NEWS | CIA Responds to Ex-Official’s “Roswell Happened” Claim: Not True

By Matthew Alford, PhD

After a tense wait, the CIA has finally stated its position on the explosive “Roswell Happened” comments made by their former Entertainment Liaison Officer Chase Brandon. Jennifer Youngblood of the Agency's Office of Public Affairs said that official historians have checked their files but “found nothing in the Agency’s holdings to corroborate Mr. Brandon’s specific claims.”

Brandon ignited an ongoing media furore following his appearance on Coast to Coast AM on June 23 of this year when he announced that he had seen evidence in a box marked ‘Roswell’ at the CIA’s Historical Intelligence Collection (HIC) which confirmed “100%” his belief that the government had recovered an extraterrestrial craft and its occupants near Roswell, New Mexico in July of 1947.

The CIA was responding by email to a detailed series of questions sent by a group of British and Canadian researchers: Robbie Graham, doctoral candidate at the University of Bristol and editor of silverscreensaucers.blogspot.com, Matthew Alford, Grant Cameron, and Victor Viggiani. The group’s email requested information about Brandon, specifically: his current relationship with the CIA; the possibility of researchers checking his claims; the vetting of his comments by the Publications Review Board, and whether his utterances disclosed classified information in any way. Robbie Graham commented:

“The CIA have done exactly what we expected they would do. They’ve refused to address our questions and they’ve brushed aside Brandon’s claims without directly calling him a liar.” He added: “It’s interesting that they say they actually checked their archives for the ‘Roswell box’ Brandon described -- that must have been a weird library trip.”

The purpose of Brandon's statements remains unclear, with some pointing to him promoting his new book, The Cryptos Conundrum, and others speculating it could be part of a more sophisticated UFO disinformation or disclosure strategy. Youngblood also pointed the researchers towards the Agency's 1997 supposedly definitive account of its role in UFO studies, which appears on its website:

UFO Crash Near Roswell

By Robbie Graham and Matthew Alford, PhD
silverscreensaucers.blogspot.com

Matthew Alford

On 23 June, 2012, in an interview for the popular American radio show, Coast to Coast AM, the CIA’s former liaison to the entertainment industry, Charles ‘Chase’ Brandon made extraordinary claims about the so-called “Roswell incident,” in which the US military is widely believed to have retrieved extraterrestrial materials and bodies after a mysterious object crashed in the deserts of New Mexico.

Brandon declared:

“I also absolutely know as I sit here talking to you that there was a craft from beyond this world that crashed at Roswell, that the military picked up remains of not just the wreckage, but cadavers.”

Most explosively, Brandon recounted an occasion when he saw direct proof of the alien nature of Roswell while conducting research at the CIA’s Historical Intelligence Collection (HIC) as part of his role as CIA Entertainment Liaison Officer (ELO). Brandon claimed he had the rare opportunity to look inside a box labelled “Roswell” containing “materials... papers... [and] other items” but stressed that he “cannot, will not, under any imaginable set of circumstances tell you what I saw in there specifically,” with the implication being that to reveal more specific details would be a breach of national security.

Based on what he claims to have seen in the box, Brandon stated unequivocally: “100 percent, guaranteed... Roswell happened. There was a craft, absolutely cadavers,” but added, “Beyond that, I have no idea where anything else went.”

The “Roswell Incident” first came to public attention 65 years ago on 8 July, 1947, when the Roswell Army Air Force (RAAF) hastily announced to the press its “capture” of a downed “flying saucer” on an isolated ranch. A few hours later, the RAAF changed its story to the effect that what had been recovered, in fact, was a common weather balloon. The United States Air Force (USAF) was to change this story again in 1995 with the announcement that the “weather balloon” had been a Top Secret high-altitude spy balloon. This story was then officially re-written in 1997 to account for several apparently non-human bodies multiple eyewitnesses claimed were recovered from the crash. The bodies, the USAF equivocated, were human corpses, test dummies, or both.

To date, Brandon is the most senior CIA officer – former or serving – to have claimed direct knowledge of an extraterrestrial link to the Roswell incident. Brandon worked for the CIA for thirty-five years, twenty-five of which he spent in the Agency’s elite Clandestine Service as an undercover, covert operations officer. His foreign assignments involved international terrorism, counterinsurgency, global narcotics trafficking and weapons smuggling. He was also an Agency foreign political affairs analyst, Presidential briefer to Bill Clinton and an instructor in paramilitary and espionage tactics at secret CIA training camps. In 1996, Brandon began his ELO role in which he advised on numerous films and TV series – often uncredited – quietly shaping scripts, characters and concepts. In other words, he is an expert at working both the news and popular media. It fits, then, that Brandon was speaking in the context of a promotional interview for his new fictional UFO-themed book, The Cryptos Conundrum.

Judging from online chatter, the UFO community is wondering if Brandon’s Roswell comments may herald the much anticipated ‘Disclosure’ of alien reality. Brandon’s book passed through the Agency’s Publications Review Board (PRB), and his radio interview should, as standard procedure, have also been subject to prior approval by the PRB. If Brandon’s comments were subject to official approval, and if he was speaking the truth, then this might indicate that the CIA is using him to work what the Agency calls a ‘limited hangout,’ whereby previously hidden information is released to the public in order to prevent a greater exposure of more damaging details.

In this context, it is noteworthy that Brandon carefully absolved the CIA of any on-going complicity in an active cover-up of the Roswell incident. Brandon implied that all that now keeps this information from the public is 65 years’ worth of storage dust and the patchy institutional memory of the powers that be. As Brandon tells it, the Roswell incident is as dead as the alien cadavers he claims must be stored “somewhere.” Yes, Roswell was real and extraterrestrial, says Brandon, and yes, the evidence was “put in cold storage,” but today’s Agency should not be held accountable for the actions of a handful of panicked and perplexed Cold War-era agents who shuffled off their mortal coils decades ago and who took what little knowledge they had to their graves. And those Agency employees who do occasionally stumble across Roswell evidence today have no real understanding of what they’re looking at or what to do with it. In terms of a revelation about the existence of aliens, Brandon’s rendering is about as depoliticized as it gets.

Victor Marchetti
Victor Marchetti
Victor Marchetti, former special assistant to Deputy CIA Director Richard Helms, once said that the government uses limited hangouts “when their veil of secrecy is shredded and they can no longer rely on a phony cover story to misinform the public.” In such instances, said Marchetti, “they resort to admitting – sometimes even volunteering – some of the truth while still managing to withhold the key and damaging facts in the case. The public, however, is usually so intrigued by the new information that it never thinks to pursue the matter further.”

Fittingly, in 1979, Marchetti himself raised eyebrows with his own public statements on the UFO issue. In an article for Second Look magazine, Marchetti wrote: “I do know that the CIA and the US government have been concerned over the UFO phenomenon for many years and that their attempts, both past and recent, to discount the significance of the phenomenon and to explain away the apparent lack of official interest in it have all the earmarks of a classic intelligence cover-up.” He added, “My theory is that we have, indeed, been contacted – perhaps even visited – by extraterrestrial beings, and that the U.S. Government, in collusion with other national powers of the Earth, is determined to keep this information from the general public.” However, Marchetti was merely voicing an opinion and does not claim to have seen proof of extraterrestrial contact with his own eyes, as Brandon does.

Not insignificantly, Brandon also claimed during his interview to have spoken to JFK’s coroner, who he says confirmed to him that the President had been shot from the front and was therefore most definitely the victim of a conspiracy. Of course, Brandon’s own personal ‘disclosures’ may prove an effective way to sell copies of his book, and also to whet appetites for his forthcoming sequel, The Hour Glass. This is certainly the more mainstream interpretation of what has transpired here. Still, such a deceitful and outlandish marketing strategy runs the risk of Brandon appearing to be, well, deceitful and outlandish. For a man currently employed as Senior Consultant to SpecTal, the intelligence division of defence giant BAE Systems, Brandon’s Roswell declarations are liable at least to raise difficult questions among colleagues. Furthermore, in the unlikely event that any costs result from Brandon’s statements, such as if they prompt someone to steal material from the HIC, he could at least be sued by the government.

A former high-level Reagan Administration official told us that “if” extraterrestrial material was in the possession of the US government, it would of course be classified, while another highly-respected ex-CIA Special Operations officer stressed to us that “All [CIA] employees sign a Secrecy Agreement. Violation of that agreement can bring severe repercussions.” When we made doubly clear to this CIA veteran that our enquiry related specifically to the UFO issue, he restated his position word-for-word, with the addendum “Have a nice day.” In theory, the penalties include life in jail or even a death sentence.

As yet, however, Brandon has fallen artfully through the cracks in the national security system. Even though in practice the government is clearly sensitive about the UFO phenomenon (with reams of declassified documentation from every branch of the government revealing high-level concern about UFO incidents worldwide into the post-Cold War era), it has maintained since the closure of the USAF’s Project Blue Book in 1969 that UFOs are definitely not a national security concern. Furthermore, the very concept of ‘national security’ is more slippery than is often suggested by the image of square-jawed, be-suited men with guns. Former Chairman of the PRB, John Hollister Hedley, commented recently that even the CIA’s own definition of national security was not “hard and fast” or “absolute or constant.” Consequently, whether there is any truth to Brandon’s statements or not, Washington would be hard-pressed to prosecute, even if it had the will to do so.

We asked Chase Brandon to elaborate on and justify his Roswell comments. He has yet to reply.

We also sent the CIA a list of questions and requested a formal response to Brandon’s allegations. The Agency has assured us they are looking into our enquiry and will get back to us “quickly.” We are still waiting.

Regardless of the exact nature of the UFO phenomenon, it is a great shame for those of us interested in either UFOs or government propaganda that Chase Brandon's statements have been unchallenged and, indeed, unreported outside of the UFO community and that the CIA itself has yet to respond to them, despite our enquiries. Brandon’s statements beg explanation for several reasons, not least because they indicate that the concerns of the powerful are very distant from those of ordinary citizens in a participatory democracy.
