Former President James Earl Carter has passed away (1924-2024), destined to be remembered as much for his administration's troubled policies as for his charitable pursuits and legendary efforts in building homes with Habitat for Humanity for four decades as a former Chief Executive. After the press began reporting about Carter's alleged UFO sighting prior to his election, rumors began to swirl about a potential new UFO study being initiated by the Carter White House, once he claimed the Oval Office.

However, throughout Carter's only term no publicly displayed UFO project came about, though some interesting UFO documentation did emerge in publications released via Congress.

In recent years my comments relating to Democrats have not been kind, but during Carter's era, pretty much my last time fully respecting a Democrat President, his integrity, honesty and faith inspired me.

Also inspiring -- and inspired -- was former Democrat congressional representative James Hanley, a funeral director by trade (and refreshingly, for something different, not the almost obligatory attorney known to haunt Congress in great quantities). Throughout much of the 1960s and seventies, as he served eight terms as a congressman, his office had been the recipient of my numerous letters regarding the need for a comprehensive UFO investigation.

Knowing of my interest and then expressed desire to assist the Carter administration, should a hopefully open UFO project be initiated, Hanley went full-blown congressional recommendation on my behalf. Picking up the mail on the day when his and the Carter transition team's letters arrived was simply incredible for me.

Of course, no such public project surfaced, and as some suspected while others new, the government was already and always aware of the UFO phenomenon, though the scientific approach needed an injection of people and equipment calculated to learn, if possible, the intricacies of this enigma.

What role might I have played, had a project come about? Well, armed with only a liberal college education with a major in communication arts -- and in no way in possession of extensive scientific credentials -- I believe I would have been content just to sweep the floor, empty trash baskets and maintain an awareness of what key staff members were thinking and doing.

Decades later, UFO research has become acceptable, even urgent (particularly in regard to near-approaches by "UAP" to conventional aircraft), bolstered by confessed government interest. In this respect, I'm happy to know that the UFO has at last achieved scientific respectability -- really the only goal most researchers and investigators ever desired from the start. As for Congressman Hanley, I remain impressed to this day how he refused to let what surely must have involved ridicule from his colleagues drive him away from a legitimate scientific mystery and an enthusiastic constituent.

Carter's White House Wanted NASA To Establish UFO Panel of Inquiry

“… what NASA should do about a White House request that it establish a UFO panel of inquiry. The panel would take up where the Air Force left off 10 years ago when it closed its UFO investigation, Project Blue Book.”

The White House, whose chief occupant once spotted a strange glowing blob in the sky, wants the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to look into reopening the government’s probe of unidentified flying objects.

But NASA officials aren't eager to do it without some solid evidence such as a “little green man,” or at least a piece of metal from a UFO.

“We're not anxious to do it because we're not ure what we can do” said Dave Williamson, NASA assistant for special projects. “It's my personal opinion that it’s not wise to do research on something that is not a measurable phenomena. Spending public money for such research is questionable.

“There is no measurable UFO evidence such as a piece of metal, flesh or cloth. We don’t even have any radio signals,” he said. “A photograph is not a measurement...”

“Give me one little green man — not a theory or memory of one — and we can have a multimillion dollar program,” he said. “It's a scientific dilemma. How do you prove something that doesn't exist?”

“It's like the Loch Ness monster revisited. Everyone sees it, but there is no physical evidence,” he aid.

Williamson heads a group of technical experts who will recommend by the end of the year what NASA should do about a White House request that it establish a UFO panel of inquiry. The panel would take up where the Air Force left off 10 years ago when it closed its UFO investigation, Project Blue Book.

What can I say? This is all about the invisible man, man. Every few years I pull these letters out, and having discussed their origin in blog entries of old, I'll just direct first-time readers to the search engine above, where one may simply type in the word, Hanley. Instantly displayed before you will be several blog entries dealing with the letters. I thought it appropriate to dig up the past today because the government finally released something of an updated UFO, oops, UAP report -- the unclassified version, unfortunately, but I suppose beggars can't be choosers.

I thought it appropriate to dig up the past today because the government finally released something of an updated UFO, oops, UAP report -- the unclassified version, unfortunately, but I suppose beggars can't be choosers.

While many researchers have come forward to provide thoughtful commentary on the report, perhaps the best that can be said is that the government has at last shed snotty innuendo, negatively-toned bureaucratic legalese and abstruse talk-down language in favor of simply admitting that there's something real out there, up there and (gasp!) unexplained. Whew! There, was that so bad? It's finally been said, and it didn't hurt a bit, did it? Far as I can tell, people aren't rushing outdoors to engage in panic in the streets now that we are assured, in the timeworn words of the many who warned us years ago: UFOs are real.

Sadly, I am dismayed to now hear the occasional former military officer or current government official make light of the "ufologists" who, in their minds, did not give the subject credibility over the years. Really? Without UFO investigators and researchers gleaned from all walks of life and documenting the reality of the UFO/UAP for decades, the New Arrivals who breezed on in and act as if they are Columbus discovering the New World would remain clueless to the extent of the phenomenon.

I'm no scientist, but merely as somebody who has had a hand or two in this strange business for decades (though I admit to being woefully out of touch with a large body of information these days) I have had no reason to go bonkers over exotic theories suggesting that the UFO is well understood any better by government brains than by the man or woman on the street. I think we are collectively baffled internationally. Do we engage in reverse UFO technology and propulsion offered by or taken from extraterrestrials? Again, I suspect we remain mostly in the dark, be we military engineers or people on the street. As on prior occasions, I will defer to Charles Fort, remove his tongue from his cheek and suggest we may indeed be somebody else's "property" in so many ways.

Heck yes, I wish the UFO "abduction" phenomenon had been mentioned in the new assessment, but delicious cases such as the Pascagoula incident obviously did not fit in with what seemed a definite military aircraft/UAP theme. Excluded also was the elephant in the room known as something akin to electromagnetic effects associated with UFOs, aircraft, automobiles, power plants and the like. You know, stuff that really might scare the hell out of Just Plain Folk.

Then again, we out here who are consistently denied truth in detail are not receiving the CLASSIFIED version, are we?

My letters shown here are 45 years old. I'll say almost half a century old just to add drama. Ouch. For those who think official UFO reporting and tracking started in 2004, I have news for them: Congressman Jim Hanley knew about UFOs in the 1960s, when important UFO activity seemed rampant, and he wasn't alone as a congressional member.

Am I disappointed that nothing further developed following the congressman's recommendation? Yes and no. Yes because I had ideas and would have been comfortable in a public information setting -- and no because maybe a Carter Era UFO project would have fizzled, relegating me to attend to other duties, such as driving President Carter's mother, "Miss Lillian" to supermarkets in Georgia, or maybe helping Carter's frequently outrageous brother produce his "Billy Beer." I don't know, perhaps I would have been assigned the task of finding and neutralizing the "killer rabbit" alleged to have chased Carter's boat, or of conquering the "malaise" Carter believed had taken the nation hostage as the country entered a terrible era of inflation. Would I have later joined the President as he volunteered with Habitat for Humanity? Yes, of course -- if I could just help build prison cells to hold corrupt government bureaucrats.

So who cares if Frank Moore's secretary couldn't spell "liaison?" How I miss those days of typed letters, when spelling error gremlins occupied a place in society to muck up the very best of intentions.

But the fun's over until the next official go-around, so I'll stuff these time-expired letters back into some unobtrusive crevice while the debate rages on. As UAP inquiries continue with a seemingly new and improved era of government concern behind them, one thing remains consistent: The phenomenon itself will stubbornly refuse to answer questions posed by the highest of authorities. No self-respecting enigma gives up its secrets easily. Whether we the public will ever be fully informed regarding the deepest of the deep, of course, remains to be seen.

"'The X-Files' and Roswell Evolved Simultaneously..."

     The only way the buildup to Sunday night’s revival of “The X-Files” could’ve been better last week is if Klatuu had tossed UFO beer cans across the White House lawn. First, the “alien megastructure” debate over KIC 8462852 was reenergized when analysts eliminated comet swarms as a cause of the dimming phenomenon surrounding a star located 1,480 light years from Earth. Maybe, as hypothesized in October, ET engineers really are building massive off-world platforms after all.

Then came the Caltech researchers announcing the inferential existence, based on the orbital patterns of Kuiper Belt debris, of a Neptune-sized “Planet Nine.” Although this thing is projected to have a mass 10 times greater than Earth, the real spine-tingler was its predicted 15,000 year solar orbit. That could mean Planet Nine is actually Nibiru, of alleged Sumerian lore, home to the antediluvian Anunnaki gold-hunters who came to Earth and created homo sapien hybrids for slave laborers to work the gold mines.

Finally, last Friday just after 5 p.m., probably after the supervisors had knocked off for the weekend, somebody at the CIA tweeted “Take a Peek Into Our #XFiles” and posted links to Agency documents that have been in public circulation since Jimmy Carter was president. Nothing new here for the hardcores, but hey, get a load of that report dated 8/1/52: “It is recommended that CIA surveillance of subject matter [UFOs], in coordination with proper authorities of primary operational concern at ATIC, be continued. It is strongly urged, however, that no indication of CIA interest or concern reach the press or public, in view of their probably alarmist tendencies to accept such interest as ‘confirmatory’ of the soundness of ‘unpublished facts’ in the hands of the U.S. Government.”

Say what? The CIA wanted to protect us from our alarmist tendencies? Why would they say that? What would we have to be alarmed about? Unpublished facts? Which unpublished facts? Proper authorities? By whose definition is authority proper?

Anyhow, yeah, I was rooting for the reprise of Mulder and Scully to be as exciting as the return of the Nibiru slavers. Maybe it was nostalgia for the infancy of the World Wide Web, when consumers were still hostage to limited options like brick-and-mortar, and Art Bell’s paranoia ruled midnight radio. As cultural buzzwords, “The X-Files” and Roswell evolved simultaneously, and who could say for sure just how much the former factored into the USAF’s PR problem with the latter, when the brass looked desperately moronic in blaming the 1947 incident on military crash-test dummy experiments in 1952. Such halcyon days, the Nineties:

Uncounted Arizona residents from Prescott to Phoenix wandering outside to catch a glimpse of comet Hale-Bopp only to be confronted instead by a humongous flying boomerang. A California suicide cult attempting to climb aboard via applesauce and strychnine. Paranoia everywhere, Oklahoma City, Waco, Ruby Ridge, so unlike today. Everybody got caught up in “The Truth Is Out There” craze – even at a White House birthday party for John Podesta.

But you can’t go back. Even with music by Mark Snow. And even with script writers possessing a daunting command of their material. And even with clever contemporary hooks like the Jimmy Kimmel-Barak Obama 2015 chat about space aliens, and more generic swipes at cable-channel demagoguery (“What Bill O’Reilly knows about the truth could fill an eyedrop”). “Life,” as Mulder 2016 moped, “has become a punchline.”

De Void knows a few things about punchlines, and expects no satisfactory answers from The Great Taboo -- not in fiction and certainly not from this fool’s errand of a blog. But Sunday night’s latest convoluted tangle of “X-Files” conspiracies reminded me why I’d drifted away from the show a couple of seasons of seasons before its 2002 wrap. After a nine-year run and two movies, it became pretty clear the writers lacked an end game, then as now. They boxed themselves onto such an incoherent ledge, De Void didn’t care much anymore. And unlike 20 years ago, today I can get all this stuff – “false flag” operations, hybrid aliens, “a venal conspiracy of men against humanity,” as Mulder put it – from the Internet.

When you dump all this junk into the same laundry basket, as last night’s “My Struggle” episode did, it goes down like fast food. To wit: Mulder spends a decade chasing space aliens and it takes less than an hour to persuade him to rewrite his whole world view? Also: Somebody please tell me “the truth is out there” and “I want to believe” really didn't make their way into the dialogue. Somebody tell me the evil talk-show guy didn't actually say there's a plot to quote "take over America." But maybe that's already happened. One of “The X-Files” biggest sponsors last night was Scientology. Maybe the teachings of Xenu filtered into the narrative. How would we know, one way or the other?

That said, De Void will probably tune in again, hoping for a glimpse of the A-game, Michael Jordan’s post-up jumper with the Washington Wizards. No point in trying to figure out what the writers haven't, either. Twenty years of eroding standards on every front and all I need anymore is that occasional moment hanging in empty space like a little diamond.      On this day in 1973, Jimmy Carter filed a report with unofficial investigators of aerial phenomena asserting that he had witnessed an unidentified flying object in 1969. Carter, who at the time was Georgia’s governor, went on in 1977 to become the nation’s 39th president.

Although it was an unexplained event, Carter consistently has said that his knowledge of physics — as an Annapolis graduate, he had been assigned to the U.S. Navy’s nuclear submarine program — ruled out the possibility that he had witnessed an alien spacecraft.

The sighting was said to have occurred during his visit to the Lions Club in Leary, Ga., although the date remains in dispute.

In his report, Carter wrote that the object was self-luminous, about as bright as the full moon. He said it had been witnessed by some 10 persons and had been visible for about 10 minutes.

As he put it: “[We were ]standing outside of a little restaurant, I believe, a high school lunchroom, and a kind of green light appeared in the western sky. This was right after sundown. It got brighter and brighter. And then it eventually disappeared. It didn’t have any solid substance to it, it was just a very peculiar looking light. None of us could understand what it was.”

AREA 51: U-2s, UFOs and Operation Blue Book – Recent Declassified CIA Documents

     News of recent de-classified CIA documents obtained via FOIA by the National Security Archives has gone viral, both in social media and with mainstream news venues.

The common thesis of the MSM reports is that the documents, or more accurately a lengthy report entitled The Central Intelligence Agency and Overhead Reconnaissance: The U-2 and OXCART Programs, 1954-1974 has revealed something “new” i.e., official confirmation of the biggest OPEN secret in the world—the existence of the Top Secret Area 51; at the same time the MSM is highlighting the omission of UFOs, aliens etc., being mentioned in said report, thus pooh-poohing any possibility of such claims. Both proclamations are demonstrably false (see below).

Unofficially, the knowledge of the existence of Area 51 has been known for decades and has been the focus of mainstream media attention in the past and not just in passing I might add; for example, the training for the rescue of our American brethren held hostage in Iran back in the ‘70’s was practiced at Area 51 and later revealed by the MSM.

Then, President Jimmy Carter (by default) would have his name melded with Area 51 along with the unfortunate failure of the rescue mission; the latter of course would far over shadow the fact that the training took place at the (so-called) secret location.

Almost 15 years later, President Bill Clinton would sign a Presidential Determination, exempting “the Air Force’s operating location near Groom Lake, [Area 51] Nevada from any Federal, State, interstate or local provision respecting control and abatement of solid waste or hazardous waste disposal . . ..” This action was precipitated by a lawsuit of then current and or former civilian employees (or widows) who worked at Area 51 and were exposed to very harmful toxic fumes in performance of their duties, which later caused major health issues and in some instances—death!

The common consensus is President Clinton gets credit for the “official” confirmation re the existence of Top Secret Area 51 (September 29, 1995). Moreover, Clinton, during a speech at Hong Kong in ’05 stated:

". . . there was also a site in Nevada where people were convinced that the government had buried a UFO and perhaps an alien deep underground because we wouldn't allow anybody to go there. And uhm… I can say now, 'cause it's now been released into the public domain.... This place in Nevada was really serious, that there was an alien artifact there. So I actually sent somebody there to figure it out."

In the final analysis the media’s attention to this latest episode is much ado about nothing, and only exemplifies their common desire to latch on to a known, attention-grabbing subject, but without giving it the due diligence that is normally a perquisite to investigative reporting.

Shortly after the podcast was published, some have taken the opportunity to example their creative writing skills; case in point, one article was entitled, “Jimmy Carter: No Truth to UFO Rumors.” The irony here is that there is no truth to the title!

Carter, in the interview, reiterates the textbook definition of a UFO; he states, "it was unidentified, it was flying, and it was an object." It’s important to note, that this is what he has been saying for decades, no more or no less!

This particular article goes on to exclaim:

“Dr. Steven Novella, president of the New England Skeptical Society (NESS) and host of the ‘The Skeptics' Guide to the Universe’ said, ‘UFO stories like these are almost always the result of mundane astronomical events.’ He went on to explain that Former President Carter may have witnessed the planet Venus under unusual atmospheric conditions.”

What the article fails to mention is that the possibility of what President Carter witnessed, being the planet Venus was discussed; in fact the host asked Carter twice, if what he saw could have been Venus, and Carter, emphatically stated, “no!” Explaining that he and his entourage were all outdoorsmen, and very familiar with Venus, and Mars etc., in the night sky.

Another erroneous article out in the electronic void is entitled, Jimmy Carter Distances Himself From Kucinich On UFOs. In it the author writes:

“ . . . Carter has told CNN that he does not at all believe the object he and about 25 other people saw — a round object that changed colors — was actually any sort of alien spaceship.”

As stated beforehand, Carter has never wavered on his account for decades. He never said it was an alien spaceship!

What’s laughable about the a fore mentioned authors is their blatant ignorance of the UFO subject; if what Carter witnessed, (or for that matter anyone), was in fact an extraterrestrial craft, then by definition, it can’t be a UFO!

Kucinich, by the way clarifies his sighting in exactly the same way as President Carter did/does, i.e., stating, “–it was unidentified flying object, okay. It's like -- it's unidentified. I saw something.“

After digesting the content of these two articles in particular, one has to wonder if in fact the first author listened to the interview with Carter at all; the monitions seem to indicate otherwise.

One other tidbit that the first author omitted, which gave me a chuckle, is that Carter recalled, using a psychic in an official capacity (while president) to locate . . . I believe a missing plane, and the effort was successful! For some reason, the hosts just glossed over that admission.

Finally, methinks it’s safe to say that the goal of the hosts at, The Skeptics' Guide To The Universe was to give a more –conventional explanation as to what President Carter witnessed back in 1969—that didn’t happen! The exchange only solidified his position.
