AREA 51: U-2s, UFOs and Operation Blue Book – Recent Declassified CIA Documents

     News of recent de-classified CIA documents obtained via FOIA by the National Security Archives has gone viral, both in social media and with mainstream news venues.

The common thesis of the MSM reports is that the documents, or more accurately a lengthy report entitled The Central Intelligence Agency and Overhead Reconnaissance: The U-2 and OXCART Programs, 1954-1974 has revealed something “new” i.e., official confirmation of the biggest OPEN secret in the world—the existence of the Top Secret Area 51; at the same time the MSM is highlighting the omission of UFOs, aliens etc., being mentioned in said report, thus pooh-poohing any possibility of such claims. Both proclamations are demonstrably false (see below).

Unofficially, the knowledge of the existence of Area 51 has been known for decades and has been the focus of mainstream media attention in the past and not just in passing I might add; for example, the training for the rescue of our American brethren held hostage in Iran back in the ‘70’s was practiced at Area 51 and later revealed by the MSM.

Then, President Jimmy Carter (by default) would have his name melded with Area 51 along with the unfortunate failure of the rescue mission; the latter of course would far over shadow the fact that the training took place at the (so-called) secret location.

Almost 15 years later, President Bill Clinton would sign a Presidential Determination, exempting “the Air Force’s operating location near Groom Lake, [Area 51] Nevada from any Federal, State, interstate or local provision respecting control and abatement of solid waste or hazardous waste disposal . . ..” This action was precipitated by a lawsuit of then current and or former civilian employees (or widows) who worked at Area 51 and were exposed to very harmful toxic fumes in performance of their duties, which later caused major health issues and in some instances—death!

The common consensus is President Clinton gets credit for the “official” confirmation re the existence of Top Secret Area 51 (September 29, 1995). Moreover, Clinton, during a speech at Hong Kong in ’05 stated:

". . . there was also a site in Nevada where people were convinced that the government had buried a UFO and perhaps an alien deep underground because we wouldn't allow anybody to go there. And uhm… I can say now, 'cause it's now been released into the public domain.... This place in Nevada was really serious, that there was an alien artifact there. So I actually sent somebody there to figure it out."

In the final analysis the media’s attention to this latest episode is much ado about nothing, and only exemplifies their common desire to latch on to a known, attention-grabbing subject, but without giving it the due diligence that is normally a perquisite to investigative reporting.

CIA Gets UFOs Wrong in Area 51 Document

      The National Security Archive at George Washington University has posted a document obtained via the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) that finally officially acknowledges the existence of Area 51, although this is not the first official document to reference Area 51 and the CIA’s account of the U-2 and UFOs is not entirely accurate.

The document is a CIA report on overhead reconnaissance, and details the history of the development of the U-2 and OXCART spy planes from 1954 to 1974, both of which were developed and tested at the super secret Area 51 airstrip on the Nevada Test and Training Range, adjacent to Nellis Air Force Base.

Until now, it has been ironic that Area 51 has been both the most secretive U.S. Air Force base, while at the same time being perhaps the most well-known. KLAS TV news in Las Vegas has been on the forefront of Area 51 research. They began investigating the secret base and reporting on its activities via information they had gathered from engineers who worked on the base in the early 1980s. However, it wasn’t until 1989 when KLAS reporter George Knapp interviewed a man claiming to have worked on back engineered extraterrestrial space craft at Area 51 that the base began to pique the interest of the public at large.

Since then it has been referenced in countless books, movies,video games and TV shows. The entire time, the US government did not acknowledge its existence. Until now, some people have doubted it existed at all.

John Greenewald, a specialist in FOIA requests, has amassed one of the largest collections of declassified government documents on his BlackVault.com website. He says he thinks the hype over the newly released CIA document is a little over blown. He says he actually has in his records two other documents that reference Area 51 (see one below). One of those he obtained with a FOIA request on Area 51 to the Department of Energy. . . .

Area 51 and UFOs

Interestingly, the CIA document does reference UFOs. It has a section titled “U-2s, UFOs, and Operation Blue Book.” This section states that once they began test flights of the U-2 in the mid 1950s there was an increase in UFO reports. It says witnesses began to write letters to the Air Force, and “This, in turn, led to the Air Force’s Operation Blue Book.”

While it is most certain U-2 flights did lead to an increase in UFO reports, this did not lead to the creation of the Air Force’s Project Blue Book. . . .

      WASHINGTON — The government has finally recognized the existence of Area 51, according to the National Security Archive, which published recently obtained declassified CIA reports detailing and mapping the previously unacknowledged area in Nevada.

The National Security Archive at George Washington University published a report, "The Secret History of the U-2," on the spy planes that the Central Intelligence Agency relied on during the Cold War.

The Archive obtained declassified documents about the history of the U-2 — which reference Area 51 on numerous occasions — through a Freedom of Information Act request filed in 2005.

The origins of Area 51 are tightly bound up in the history of the U-2, for which the CIA needed a reliable and secret test facility in the U.S.

They found it in Groom Lake on April 12, 1955, according to “The Central Intelligence Agency and Overhead Reconnaissance,” an internal CIA history of the U-2 and OXCART programs written by Gregory W. Pedlow and Donald E. Welzenbach that was declassified in fulfillment of the National Security Archive’s FOIA request. . . .
