'Mystery Plane' with 'No Visible Means of Propulsion' Sighted By Pilot | UFO CHRONICLE – 1951

A veteran airline pilot said today he saw a huge "mystery plane" with no visible means of propulsion in flight above Sioux City, Ia.

It was "as large or half again as large as a B-29," he said.

Pilot Larry W. Vinther, 32, said he flew his Mid-Continent Airlines DC-3 passenger plane up to 4000 feet in an effort to get a good look at the huge plane.

The plane was silhouetted in a moonlit sky. Vinther said, "by all we could actually see was its shape and nothing of the detail of its construction except that the leading edge of its wing was absolutely straight."

Vinther said he saw "no visible means of powering the aircraft such as engine nacelles or pods.

"I'd like to know what we saw," he said, "and so would the control tower at Sioux City."

The mystery visitor appeared shortly after 8:30 p.m., Saturday as Vinther prepared to depart with Flight 9 for Omaha, Neb.

"The tower saw it first," he said, "when a red light somewhere on it began to show at what the tower thought was 8000 feet."

Vinther turned inside the mammoth plane as both aircraft circled Sioux City, "but we could see no lights aboard and I can't even describe the tail assembly–if it had one."

Vinther remained in radio contact with the tower throughout the strange episode. His co-pilot, Jim Bachmeier, also of Kansas City, joined him in observing the plane.

The cigar-shaped aircraft disappeared finally after rushing almost straight at Vinther's DC-3. It went under the passenger plane's fuselage and continued northwestward until it was lost from view.

Huge UFO Sighted Over New Mexico | UFO CHRONICLE – 1951

A crew of four were checking on a balloon. A strange object crossed their path. It was elliptal in shape, about 105 feet in diameter, flying at an altitude of about 56 miles. It was moving at about 1,800 MPH. High power binoculars showed no exhaust trail, no stream of light, no other evidence of propulsion as we know it.

During his tour in the Far East, Mr. Wallace Bush, Electronics Engineer, Classified Reconnaissance Branch, Director of Intelligence, Headquarters, Far East Air Forces, had collected information on UFO radar incidents, re-interviewed witnesses, produced updated Air Intelligence Information Reports on some cases, kept records of meetings in which UFOs were discussed, and evaluated UFO radar reports. He turned the collected information over to Air Technical Intelligence Liaison Office, Far East Air Force.

Captain Charles Malven compiled the information into Intelligence Report 29-52 sent to both the Air Technical Intelligence Center at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and the Director of Intelligence, Headquarters, US Air Force. In this report Project 1947 discusses the activity of the Air Technical Intelligence Liaison Office and the 6004th Air Intelligence Service Squadron in UFO investigations during the Korean War.

Background on some of the 13 incidents discussed in the 11 July 1952 IR 29-52, are quoted from Dr. J. Allen Hynek’s The UFO Experience, Martin Shough’s RADCAT, and Phillip Robertson, Independent Aerial Phenomena Research.

The late Larry Fawcett had located a retired Naval Commander who served in the Combat Control Center on the USS Philippine Sea during the February 2, 1952 UFO incident and Dr. Hynek had a set of Naval intelligence documents on the incident which are not in the Project Blue Book files which he used in his presentation on the incident. Some other Air Force, Navy, and Marine radar reports case files for incident discussed in IR 29-52 accompany the article.

     Last year, 95 secrecy orders barring disclosure of inventions under the Invention Secrecy Act of 1951 were imposed on new patent applications while 36 prior secrecy orders were rescinded. Three of the newly releasable inventions have recently received patents, decades after the inventors filed their applications.

The three new patents were identified by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in response to a Freedom of Information Act request.

The formerly secret inventions that received patents this year are:

Patent Number 9057604: Point-ahead laser pointer-tracker systems with wavefront correction in both transmit and receive directions. Filed in April 1989, the patent application was finally granted in June 2015.

Patent Number 9115993: Fused PM fiber single-polarization resonator. It was filed in August 1990 and granted in August 2015.

Patent Number 9181140: Solid propellant bonding agents and methods for their use. It was filed in December 1993 and granted in November 2015.

The factors that led the U.S. government to impose secrecy orders on these particular inventions more than two decades ago (and to release them this year) are not self-evident. [...]

    There were 5,579 invention secrecy orders in effect at the end of fiscal year 2015. This was an increase from 5,520 the year before and is the highest number of such secrecy orders in more than a decade.

Under the Invention Secrecy Act of 1951, secrecy orders may be imposed on patent applications when a government agency finds that granting the patent and publishing it would be “detrimental” to national security.

Most of the current invention secrecy orders were renewals of orders granted in past years. According to statistics released under the Freedom of Information Act by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, there were 95 new secrecy orders imposed last year, while 36 prior orders were rescinded. Editor's Note: Dan reached out to us after reading the Air Intelligence Information [UFO] Report (1951) concerning F86 Fighter Jets being scrambled to investigate reports of UFOs over Long Beach, California. We tip our hats to him for sharing his mother's sighting–FW

     First off I would Like to say that this is not my story but one told by my now deceased mother. As she related it to me the story goes as follows:

In 1951 in Long Beach California she was at school and on recess and playing as kids do. At some point during this time every ones attention was taken skyward. Whether it was someone pointing and saying look she could not recall. Anyway, she said over the top of all of them was a half a dozen UFOs. No higher then just above the nearby tree tops.

The description that she gave was that they looked like two thin saucer plates on top of each other and about the size of a large car. Slightly curved on the top and bottom. Discs basically with a bulge at the top and bottom perfectly symmetrical. There appeared to be no seams, no doors, no windows, or markings of any sort. The color was described as a metallic dull platinum. She said they sat there for several minutes and never moved. Almost like they were a part of the sky. There was also no noise whatsoever.

At some point, she said they raised very high into the air and then formed a "V" shaped formation and shot across the horizon and out of view in a couple seconds. Again no noise and no sonic boom and I have no idea how fast that kind of speed is. She said they were almost instant pinpoints as far away as you could see.

After that she stated that the teacher said that they were not allowed to talk about what they saw at school. I asked her if at any point was she afraid and she said no we just all kind of stood there dumb founded and awestruck.

I can remember trying to put my mom on the spot in front of my grandmother and I asked her if she remembered mom talking about UFOs as a kid when they lived in California. She said "Ooooh yeah that's all your mother talked about for months." I remember grandma saying she didn't believe in that kind of stuff and chuckled. My grandmothers account of what mom said matched though.

Over the years we would talk about it here and there and the story never changed. In fact she talked about it until the day she died. An experience as a young kid that she said was just like yesterday it was so vivid you would never forget it. She said it completely changed her ideas on religion and life at a young age. She believed in a form of a higher power though and always said in no way shape or form did she believe what she saw was from this planet or man-made.
