‘Something extraordinary happened here’
– Colonel Charles Halt returns to UFO site in Rendlesham –

for the first time and said: “I think it was something not from this world.”

The incident – dubbed the British Roswell – took place over three nights between 26 and 28 December, in 1980.

Military personnel from nearby RAF Bentwaters and RAF Woodbridge, including the deputy base commander, witnessed strange lights in the forest and hovering above the twin NATO airbases which were on high alert as the Cold War was at its peak.

A former US Air Force commander, described as an “unimpeachable” witness to events known worldwide as the ‘Rendlesham UFO incident’, is returning to Suffolk 35 years on.
Retired Colonel Charles Halt was at the centre of a mystery that unfolded outside RAF Woodbridge over two nights in late December 1980.

Next month he will fly back to Suffolk and address the local public for the first time since it happened.

As deputy commander of the twin bases of Bentwaters and Woodbridge, he prepared a memo to the Ministry of Defence describing “unexplained lights”, and recorded what became known as the Halt Tape – a documented investigation in the forest, during which Halt saw mysterious lights like those witnessed by airmen Jim Penniston and John Burroughs two nights earlier.

In 2010, Halt signed an affidavit claiming the encounter was extraterrestrial and had been covered up by the government. . . .

Why I Believe Aliens Landed in a Suffolk – Ministry of Defence Expert

Rendlesham Forest UFO

MoD expert has worked with the two closest witnesses - both servicemen - of the unexplained phenomenon in 1980

• One recalls seeing a metal craft that could travel at 'impossible' speed.

• Radiation levels in the area were measured at well above the norm.

• The two witnesses wrote logs about the incident which they claim were later disappeared as part of a cover-up.

• Staff Sergeant Jim Penniston touched the craft and claims to have 'downloaded' a message from the future in binary code.

• The 'ship' was seen on three consecutive nights, including by the officer who was second-in-command of the base.
Something eerie stirred in the Suffolk forest. Bright lights were flashing red, blue, white and yellow, piercing the darkness just beyond the perimeter of the U.S. Air Force base. Airman John Burroughs, on patrol in the early hours, went to investigate, the hairs on his arms standing on end with the static electricity that suddenly filled the air, his radio mysteriously malfunctioning.

Ahead, a small clearing among the trees shone as bright as day . . .

And so began a mystery that has lasted a third of a century, the truth of what took place remaining as elusive now as it was on that Boxing Day in 1980. Did an alien space ship land, as the world’s UFO-hunters, ET-watchers and X-Files fans have always been desperate to believe?

Or, this being a strategic base for American front-line fighter planes, was there an accident involving some clandestine Cold War super-weapon, ruthlessly covered up by the military? Or was that strange glow just a trick of light and atmospherics from the beam of a lighthouse on the East Coast a few miles away? Or a case of mass hysteria, perhaps? Or just a Christmas hoax by bored American servicemen a long way from home?

Flights of fancy run wild in any direction you want when it comes to what history has dubbed the Rendlesham Forest Incident — and has done since 1983 when the News Of The World revealed the mysterious happenings in a front-page story headlined ‘UFO lands in Suffolk — and it’s official’ and quoted a top-secret report from one of the base commanders as its source.

Official denials and obfuscation followed. ‘Fabrication,’ screamed the Ministry of Defence. ‘Nothing of defence interest in the alleged sightings. No question of any contact with “alien beings”.’

A local forester put forward the lighthouse theory, which was latched onto by other newspapers eager to rubbish a rival’s scoop.

And so the whole affair descended into a chaos of claim and counter-claim — Close Encounter fanatics on one side, sceptics on the other, and the twain never likely to meet. . . .

England's Forests: Following the UFO Trail in Suffolk

In December 1980, US Air Force personnel at RAF Woodbridge in Suffolk claimed to have seen aliens in Rendlesham Forest. The Forestry Commission has now set up a trail for intrepid ufologists

If you want to look for something really unusual in the sky – day or night – a trip to Rendlesham Forest in Suffolk might just inspire you. This was the scene of "Britain's Roswell incident", a legendary UFO sighting – and possible landing – in December 1980.

A number of US Air Force personnel stationed at nearby RAF Woodbridge reported some very curious sightings over a two or three-day period. Alerted by mysterious lights in the forest, some servicemen claimed that they had seen – and even touched – an alien spacecraft.

The incident has sparked more correspondence with government officials than any other British UFO sighting – not to mention regular pilgrimages to the forest by avid amateur ufologists.

In honour of this, the Forestry Commission has created a three-mile UFO Trail that children of all ages can enjoy. . . .

CLAIMS by a senior US airman that the famous UFO incident at Rendlesham Forest could be a hoax have been dismissed as “a load of rubbish” by a leading expert on the sightings.

Sightings of mysterious lights in the woods at Rendlesham over two nights were reported by several airmen, including Col Conrad’s deputy, Lieutenant Colonel Charles Halt. Lt Col Halt filed reports detailing the episode, which have long been disputed, leading Lt Col Halt to accuse the US and UK governments of concocting a cover-up.

Col Conrad said has now provided a series of statements about the sightings to Dr David Clarke, a Sheffield Hallam University academic and the UFO adviser to the National Archives.

He said: “The search for an explanation could go many places including the perpetration of a clever hoax. . . .

. . . But Brenda Butler, who has written books on the incident and still goes UFO hunting in the woods three times a week, said Col Conrad’s hoax claims were “a load of rubbish”. . . .

The senior US military official who led the investigation into the supposed landing of a UFO in a Suffolk forest has spoken of the incident for the first time in three decades.

The incident had been known as Britain's Roswell: a group of American servicemen stationed in Suffolk go into a forest to investigate mysterious lights and emerge convinced they have seen an alien spacecraft.

The sightings, in December 1980, remain unexplained and have become the country's most tantalising and enduring UFO riddle.

One of those involved even claimed to have touched an alien spacecraft.

Now, the man who led the only investigation into the “Rendlesham Forest Incident” has spoken about the sightings - but his decision to end thirty years of silence is unlikely to please the UFO-believers as he suggests his men could have been hoaxed.
