Sky Lanterns Banned By Scottish Council

Sky Lanterns Banned By Scottish Council
Sky lanterns can be a major fire risk – once lit and set off into the sky you don't know where an ignited lantern will land

A Scottish council has banned sky lanterns on its property and its events after the NFU Scotland wrote a letter about their impact on livestock farmers.

The union said it would welcome both personal and public use of the lanterns being banned as they are a 'fire risk' and could be dangerous to livestock.

Stephen McCabe, leader for Inverclyde Council said the lanterns can cause huge damage both to the environment and to animals.

He said: "They can also put an unnecessary strain on the emergency services with people confusing them as distress flares or even UFO’s and calling 999.

Scotland's Strangest Alien Encounters

SCOTLAND has been home to a remarkable number of UFO sightings over the years and there are hundreds of reports about mysterious objects over the nation's skies each year.

[...]

It was 9 November, 1979 when forestry worker Bob, 61 at the time, had his walk interrupted by a large grey shimmering orb, 20ft in diameter and 12 ft tall.

As he watched, two spiked spheres rolled towards him, grabbed his trousers and pulled him.

When Bob arrived home, ashen-faced and with ripped trousers, he immediately told his wife he was the victim of a bizarre alien attack.

“Bob was a very down to earth, honest man,” recalls Scotland’s UFO expert Ron Halliday, who has written several books on alien encounters. “He stuck by his story, never embellished it and was very believable.”

Police believed something strange had happened. To date it is the only time an alien sighting has formed part of a police investigation. [...]

UFO Filmed Over Loch Lomond Area, Scotland 2-1-15

Don't be put off by this film just showing a light moving across the sky. Try to watch all the way through and you will definitely be discounting planes, lanterns etc and like me will be questioning what this large, very bright object could have been, a planet or an actual UFO? YOU decide.

Filmed 5.25pm on 1st Feb 2015 from Kinlochard, Scotland, looking South South West. Very bright large white (reddish) light moves across sky above hills. Filmed for over fifteen minutes this was definitely not a Chinese lantern (too large, too bright and too long in the sky), aircraft (No flight path and too low and slow) or helicopter (would have seen usual flashing green/red lights and heard something but object was silent plus the way it moved tells me not this type of aircraft). It moved slowly and silently. It went behind forest trees on top of the high hills which are approx one mile away and still appeared to be quite a bit further than this. Judging distance and approximate location I would say that it was going over or flying close to Loch Lomond. . . .

Kick Ass creator Mark Millar sees UFO-type object

Kick-Ass creator Mark Millar took to Twitter to report a strange sight in the Glasgow sky over New Year.

The cult Scots writer, who also dreamed up ‘Wanted’ and ‘Secret Service’, told of the his bizarre sighting on the social network in the early hours of Thursday morning.

He wrote: “I know this sounds mental, but did anybody else see that huge glowing object over Glasgow last night around 1am? Only 1 mention online.

“We thought it was a firework at first but it never exploded & and just moved from South to North of city over 60 seconds.

“The weird thing was it looked like a wingless plane flying sideways, a wide tube. Like a rolling pin. We all watched open-mouthed.

“This wasn’t a lantern. It went from Ayrshire to Campsies (about 40 miles) in 60 secs. Passed right over us & we ran to other side of house. . . .

UFO NEWS: UFO Hoaxer’s Documentary on His Failure Win’s Best Picture

'I tried to convince the world of an alien invasion'

A UFO hoaxer who failed to convince the world of an alien invasion has won a short film award with a documentary mocking his dreadful effort.

Scotsman Bill Walsh set out to make create world panic with an elaborate UFO hoax in April this year, but it turned out to be a total flop.

What started as a simple computer-generated UFO grew into a fully-fledged fake TV news report claiming to show an alien invasion in Scotland and England.

"I believe the same applies for my tattoo," he wrote. . . .

. . . But the project has not been a total loss with the filmmaker recently winning the top prize at the Edinburgh International Film Festival with a "mockumentary" about the failure. . . .

I saw two strange flying objects when I was traveling on the train from Edinburgh to London Kings Cross. The train left Edinburgh at 2.00pm on 16.01.14 and I spotted the two objects at approximately 2.10pm.

The objects seemed to be tube / disc shaped. At first I only saw one object, then a second object came into view - it was some distance behind the first but caught up with it very quickly.

It was a clear day - there were no wings to be seen on the objects. I tried my best to video them and eventually managed to do a close up shot of one of them - very tricky on a moving train. I watched them for approximately 3 minutes and then they both rose up into the cloud and disappeared from view. . . .

Mysterious Hum Heard Around World Impacts 2 Percent Of People

By Marc Lallanilla

It creeps in slowly in the dark of night, and once inside, it almost never goes away.

It's known as the Hum, a steady, droning sound that's heard in places as disparate as Taos, N.M.; Bristol, England; and Largs, Scotland.

But what causes the Hum, and why it only affects a small percentage of the population in certain areas, remain a mystery, despite a number of scientific investigations. [The Top 10 Unexplained Phenomena]

Reports started trickling in during the 1950s from people who had never heard anything unusual before; suddenly, they were bedeviled by an annoying, low-frequency humming, throbbing or rumbling sound.

The cases seem to have several factors in common: Generally, the Hum is only heard indoors, and it's louder at night than during the day. It's also more common in rural or suburban environments; reports of a hum are rare in urban areas, probably because of the steady background noise in crowded cities.

Only about 2 percent of the people living in any given Hum-prone area can hear the sound, and most of them are ages 55 to 70, according to a 2003 study by acoustical consultant Geoff Leventhall of Surrey, England. . . .

UFOs: The Untold Story - A Look at Some of the Most Famous and Supported UFO Encounters From Around the World

IT is perhaps Scotland’s most famous “close encounter” and one which has fascinated scientists, investigators and UFO hunters from around the world.

The mystery of what happened to a forestry worker called Robert Taylor on a chilly November evening more than 30 years ago is one that has baffled all who have examined the case – including the police, who keep the file open and consider it “unexplained”.

The fact that the police were not able to come up with some rational explanation is one of the enduring elements of a story which Mr Taylor continued to insist was true up until his death in 2007.

And now it is the subject of more scrutiny, thanks to a new show being produced by the National Geographic channel.

UFOs: The Untold Story aims to take a look at some of the most famous – and supported – UFO encounters from around the world, and it seems only fitting that Mr Taylor’s story should be among those told.

It started for him on November 9, 1979, when he worked for the Livingston Development Corporation ensuring that no cattle or sheep wandered into Dechmont Woods. It was a job he’d done for a long time with no unusual incidents – something that was about to change. . . .

• Morag Ritchie spotted the UFO hovering above her home in Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire

• Her daughter's fiance filmed the strange blinking lights on Saturday night

• Civil Aviation Authority: 'It could be northern lights'
A family has spoken of the terrifying moment they saw a UFO hovering above their house for four hours.

Morag Ritchie, 50, was awoken in the middle of the night by flashing lights in the sky over the family home in rural Scotland.

The grandmother-of-one woke her family up and her daughter’s fiance caught the shocking images of four blinking lights on video.

Morag said: ‘We live in a very rural area so I never have my curtains closed and I like looking at the night sky.

‘I just woke up all of a sudden and looked out of the window to see all these twinkling lights - they looked like they were moving.

‘I was quite apprehensive about it. I’m standing there looking at it and I’m thinking “is it watching me?”, so I went around the house telling everyone and they all came to have a look.'

Mrs Ritchie describes seeing a circular object hovering and spinning around above her home in Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire. . . .

A Glasgow man investigating unexplained flying objects over his home has urged anyone else who may have seen something strange to come forward.

John McGregor, who lives in the Whiteinch area of the city, has decided to release a video he filmed in 2006 in an effort to find out more about strange diamond clouds moving at speed.

In his film, shot on a camcorder, the object can be seen moving quickly across the sky with white lights flashing occasionally from it. John, who is in his 50s, told STV News he believed the objects were military aircraft, and the lights were weapons being fired.
