President Jimmy Carter's UFO Probe – What If

President Jimmy Carter's UFO Probe – What If - www.theufochronicles.com

Crashing at the Intersection of Improbability Avenue and What-If? Street

Former President James Earl Carter has passed away (1924-2024), destined to be remembered as much for his administration's troubled policies as for his charitable pursuits and legendary efforts in building homes with Habitat for Humanity for four decades as a former Chief Executive.

After the press began reporting about Carter's alleged UFO sighting prior to his election, rumors began to swirl about a potential new UFO study being initiated by the Carter White House, once he claimed the Oval Office.

However, throughout Carter's only term no publicly displayed UFO project came about, though some interesting UFO documentation did emerge in publications released via Congress.

In recent years my comments relating to Democrats have not been kind, but during Carter's era, pretty much my last time fully respecting a Democrat President, his integrity, honesty and faith inspired me.

Also inspiring -- and inspired -- was former Democrat congressional representative James Hanley, a funeral director by trade (and refreshingly, for something different, not the almost obligatory attorney known to haunt Congress in great quantities). Throughout much of the 1960s and seventies, as he served eight terms as a congressman, his office had been the recipient of my numerous letters regarding the need for a comprehensive UFO investigation.

Knowing of my interest and then expressed desire to assist the Carter administration, should a hopefully open UFO project be initiated, Hanley went full-blown congressional recommendation on my behalf. Picking up the mail on the day when his and the Carter transition team's letters arrived was simply incredible for me.

Of course, no such public project surfaced, and as some suspected while others new, the government was already and always aware of the UFO phenomenon, though the scientific approach needed an injection of people and equipment calculated to learn, if possible, the intricacies of this enigma.

What role might I have played, had a project come about? Well, armed with only a liberal college education with a major in communication arts -- and in no way in possession of extensive scientific credentials -- I believe I would have been content just to sweep the floor, empty trash baskets and maintain an awareness of what key staff members were thinking and doing.

Decades later, UFO research has become acceptable, even urgent (particularly in regard to near-approaches by "UAP" to conventional aircraft), bolstered by confessed government interest. In this respect, I'm happy to know that the UFO has at last achieved scientific respectability -- really the only goal most researchers and investigators ever desired from the start. As for Congressman Hanley, I remain impressed to this day how he refused to let what surely must have involved ridicule from his colleagues drive him away from a legitimate scientific mystery and an enthusiastic constituent.

UFO Hunter for Clinton: 'X-Conference'

X-Conference Header GrayHillary & Alien

For a number Americans the economy is a major issue for this upcoming presidential election. But many of those attending the X-Conference held in suburban Washington, D.C., over the weekend are concerned with a different kind of green.

The X-Conference is a weekend-long symposium on exopolitics--or governmental, political or social issues relating to aliens and UFOs. Various heavyweights in the UFO community came to the event to speak about their work and to discuss a conspiracy to cover up encounters with the third kind.

"There is no more important research going on in the world," said Steve Bassett, executive producer of the event, at the conference on Sunday morning. Most of the 120 or so audience members nodded in agreement.

Grant Cameron, a lecturing UFO researcher, said that UFOs have long been an issue with presidential candidates. But he said that he no longer thinks that presidents have all the facts when it comes to extra terrestrial visits.

"There's a government inside a government," that controls this information, Cameron said.

Take former President Jimmy Carter, he said. Cameron said that Carter admitted to seeing a UFO and promised to disclose any information the government had about UFOs during his presidency. But Carter never did, Cameron said.

Rom Simone, another lecturer, said it was because Carter was an outsider, shut out of the industrial-military complex. "This is what Eisenhower warned about in his last speech," Simone said.

For this election, Cameron thought that Dennis Kucinich was the mostly likely candidate to provide full disclosure on UFOs. After all, Kucinich also admitted to seeing an unidentified flying object during one of the presidential debates. But since Kucinich dropped out of the race, Cameron endorsed another candidate.

Carmeron ended up endorsing Hillary Clinton on his Web site "Hillary is sympathetic to the issue," said Cameron, a Canadian who also works as a building facility manager at the University of Manitoba to pay the bills.

Cameron added that both Hillary and former president Bill Clinton met with UFO enthusiast Laurance Rockefeller to talk about extra terrestrials. And Cameron said that he has acquired documents through Freedom of Information Act requests that show that the former president investigated UFOs.

But Cameron stressed that it is up to the UFO community to keep pushing the issue.

"Everybody is waiting for a Messiah, everyone is waiting for someone to come and make it all better," Cameron said. "Disclosure is our game. It's up to us to do the work and push the issue."

While some at the conference were skeptics about UFOs until they witnessed a sighting, Terri Mansfield said that she had believed in life outside of Earth ever since she was a little girl.

"I used to look up at the sky and wonder where I came from," she said.

Eleven years ago, Mansfield witnessed a light formation over Phoenix that some said was a UFO. The event got much press coverage. Mansfield is featured in a documentary called The Phoenix Lights.

Even though Cameron has devoted his life to studying UFOs, he said he has no problem with cynics. In fact, Cameron's 25-year-old son has no interest in UFOs, he said.

"Everybody has a right to believe what they want to believe," he said. "In the end it will eventually work out."

Shadowing Jimmy Carter's UFO Legacy

UFO Case Collage

After appearing Nov. 2, 2005, on the NBC-TV morning show "Today" (in which he declared that the Bushites' WMD-intelligence claims leading up to Iraqnam were "manipulated, at least" to keep the public off guard), former-President Jimmy Carter journeyed over to Aisle No. 131 of the Cosco discount store in Arlington, Va., just several hundred yards from the Pentagon.

There, he set about autographing, for a line of hundreds of Carter-book lovers, his latest tome - titled Our Endangered

Values: America's Moral Crisis, a hard-back item bargain-priced at $14.95 (which, coincidentally, happens to be the price of my own book - UFO Politics At The White House: Citizens Rally 'round Jimmy Carter's Promise - published last year in an expanded edition by Galde Press, Inc.)

You had to have been there to appreciate the setting. I did attend. And I knew I was headed for trouble the minute I got instructions from a clerk at the store's entrance: "If you're here for Carter's book-signing, go to Aisle 131." And: "Is that a book in that bag, Sir?" Upon my saying "yes," she advised that Uncle Jimmy is forbidden to sign any of his books not purchased from her store. Whereupon, I explained that the book happens to be one of my own compositions. She waved me on.

Of course, I was intent on having Carter sign _my_ book (while offering him an extra copy of it as a keepsake). As the line of hopeful signature recipients snaked along through one aisle after another, I was getting the distinct impression that my objective might get deterred by all the oppressive gate-keeping thereabouts. An especially eager clerk was working the crowd at one corner to instruct us as to precisely which page we should select for His Highness's signature.

Then, as I arrived within 25 feet of Carter's bunker in Aisle 131, I got a full view of his entourage of bodyguards and other Cosco-ordained gate-keepers, one of whom demanded to know where my copy of the Carter book was. I showed her _my_ book, explaining that I was here to get his signature on _that_. She semi-shrugged and allowed me to hold my position in line.

When I neared Jimmy's table (which was set so far from the line that no-one could readily reach out to shake his hand, much less ask him a question or two), one of the young women assigned there took my book and, upon seeing that it wasn't Carter's, returned it to me, declaring that "you can get only _his_ book signed." When Carter heard that, he responded: "I'll sign it." As he proceeded to do so, I handed him the other copy, asking if he'd ever seen it. He shook his head "no," and I then added, "Please keep that copy, Sir." He quickly shoved that copy beneath the cloth-draped table - as if the thing might bite him and not let go.

Signature in hand, I quickly made my way back to fresh air.

A few observations:
(1) All the gate-keeping made it seem as if Jimmy's book could create a riot if not shielded by a curtain of security. Someone there had forgotten that this place was COSCO, not Colombia.

(2) This shielding of the former president from his constituency (some of whom were bearing multiple copies of his book) diminishes both him and them.

(3) I lament my failure to acquire enough space-and-time to pose one simple question to the gentleman from Georgia: "Do you plan to write a book about your UFO-policymaking days, Sir?"

(4) This reverse-book-signing event offers lots of irony - e.g.: when the original edition of the book (via the Invisible College Press) appeared, I parceled out a few free copies, one of which I snail-mailed to Plains, Ga., ATTN: Jimmy Carter. I never heard from him direct, but a few weeks later, in early 2002, I received a form-styled postcard from the Carter Presidential Library in Atlanta, thanking me for my contribution of that copy. By the way, my inscription to Jimmy reads: "For Jimmy Carter, whose closeness to UFOtruth became the proximity fuse for igniting the public's right-to-know - and the government's duty to tell."
