Space Science: Challenges for the Extraterrestrial Hypothesis of UFO Phenomena

“Space Science”
A Review

Stanton Friedman By Stanton Friedman

Every so often I run across a splendid example of the intellectual bankruptcy of the pseudoscience of Anti-Ufology. This bookis such an example with Paris obeying the 4 basic rules of debunkdom:
A). Don’t bother me with the facts, my mind’s made up.
B). What the public doesn’t know, I won’t tell them.
C). If one can’t attack the data, attack the people
D). Do ones research by proclamation, investigation is too much trouble.
I was not surprised. Last year Paris used these techniques to throw out the story of the recovery of a crashed saucer in the Plains of San Agustin, NM, in July, 1947, at about the same time as the Roswell incident. Paris used 2 neat tricks:
1). Throw out any data connected with Barney Barnett, since after all no investigator talked to him.
Obviously they couldn’t, since Barney died well before I got the investigation going after talking to Verne and Jean Maltais in Bemidji, Minnesota. We did talk to his wife, his boss, his neighbor, his niece, and Colonel William Leed and others, and wrote about them in such books as my "Crash at Corona."Leed had been given Barney’s name by his commanding officer as somebody who knew about saucers and talked to Barney on a Western trip. Barney only spoke to him after he showed credentials. Bill contacted me after hearing me on a Toronto radio station.
2). The second neat trick was to invoke time travel.
An airplane, that had crashed in the area 3 years earlier, must have been the basis for the story. One is reminded of the time travel conjured up by the USAF to provide crash test dummies to explain stories of bodies at Corona—even though none were dropped until 6 years later; were 6’ tall, weighed 175 pounds, and were dressed in flight gear!!

Paris clearly has an agenda to do everything possible to prove that there is no way that aliens from outside our solar system could possibly get here. It would be too far, take too long, take too much time, take too much food; humans couldn’t handle the stresses, etc., ad nauseam.

Paris does apparently have a background in military intelligence. As a space scientist, I have worked on fission and fusion rockets , compact nuclear reactors for space applications, the Pioneer spacecraft, etc and still belong to the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the American Physical Society, and the American Nuclear Society. The book has a surface gloss of being scientific as Paris provides 156 References. Unfortunately, he doesn’t mention most of the work indicating the feasibility of interstellar travel or the reality of alien visitors. No mention of physical trace cases, multiple witness radar visual cases, appropriate technology, for us no less aliens, if we wanted to spend the money. There is no mention of my Chapter, “You Can Get Here From There” in my 2007 book “Flying Saucers and Science"nor my article “Star Travel: How Realistic is It?” in the 2011 volume “UFOs and Aliens”. He obviously is aware of me having sent me the book.

For reasons unknown, other than to provide propaganda, he frequently invokes “Intergalactic” visitors. Why? The Milky Way Galaxy has more than 100 Billion stars and is about 100,000 light years across. There are more than 2000 stars within a mere 55 light years of the sun. Andromeda is 2.5 million light years away with smaller galaxies “only” hundreds of thousand light years away. He stresses that the universe is 13 Billion years old. This is totally irrelevant to the question of visitors from nearby places like Zeta 1 and Zeta 2 Reticuli which are only 39.3 light years away. Last year he dismissed the crash in the Plains of San Agustin.

In the new tome he gets rid of Roswell just as irrationally. There is unfortunately no index, but we find this gem on page 161. Speaking of the ET hypothesis:
”The UFO community often modifying and revising their agenda to conform to the prevailing culture of their memberships…. A clear example of this occurred when the UFO community was faced with a serious institutional crisis regarding the US government’s explanation for the 1947 Roswell incident. Rather than accepting the proven fact that the UFO was actually a balloon under the auspices of project Mogul, the UFO community conveniently resorted to claims of a government cover-up”.
Proven fact?! Mogul was the third explanation with the fourth being related to crash test dummies. How absurd. Mogul consisted of a train of 20-25 standard neoprene weather balloons linked by string at 20’ intervals. There was nothing classified about the technology only the purpose—to listen for sound waves that would be produced by the first Soviet nuclear explosion. Major Marcel and Colonel Blanchard were very familiar with standard neoprene weather balloons launched from the base almost every day. They were not made of indestructible foil like materials with memory metal properties. Paris, despite all the references, doesn’t even mention the 2 large Roswell reports. Moreover, Dr. David Rudiak showed there was no Mogul Launch that would fill the bill.

The notion that there has been no government cover-up of Roswell in particular, or UFOs in general, is easily shown to be baloney. Can Paris provide unexpurgated copies of the 156 pages of Top SECRET Umbra NSA UFO documents on which one can read one sentence per page with the rest being whited out? How about the dozens of heavily redacted CIA TOP SECRET UMBRA UFO documents on which one can read a few words per page with everything else being blacked out?

Paris’ bias is illustrated by this:
”Ufology, in short, is now a cult in which belief in extraterrestrials is analogous to belief in the supernatural.”
No basis is provided. It is no wonder he doesn’t mention most of the solid sources of data such as Blue Book Special Report 14 or The Congressional Hearings of 1968, or Dr. J. Allan Hynek’s book “The UFO Experience”. It would certainly be more accurate to say that disbelief in UFOs is a cult fed by arrogance and ignorance. I recall Dr. Campbell, an astronomer, who in 1941 computed that getting a man to the moon and back would require a rocket with an initial launch weight of a million-million tons. He assumed, for no good reason, a single stage rocket limited to 1G acceleration and having to provide all the energy rather than taking advantage of cosmic freeloading. Saturn V weighed only 3000 tons at launch of the Apollo Missions.

The book, ”Science Was Wrong” by Kathleen Marden and myself has many examples of smart people reaching foolish conclusions about impossibility because of their ignorance and arrogance. Paris even quotes the silly finding of astronomer Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson as expressed in the Peter Jennings ABC-TV Mockumentary of February 2005, that our fastest spacecraft, Voyager, would take 77,000 years to reach the nearest star, ignoring the simple fact that it has had no propulsion system operating since leaving the vicinity of the Earth. He even claims that therefore one of our fastest man made spacecraft would take over a billion years to cross the Milky Way. Yes and Ferdinand Magellan’s ship took 3 years to circle the earth. But the ISS takes only 90 minutes. Next we will be told that tossing a bottle in the ocean will tell us how long it would take to cross it. Paris seems to have no understanding of the simple fact that technological progress comes from doing things differently in an unpredictable way. His approach seems to be based on the totally untenable concept that the future can only be an extrapolation of the past. Maybe he does use a slide rule instead of an electronic calculator.

I must give Paris credit for Chutzpah. On page 164 he claims that in 2013 he conducted a comprehensive analysis of approximately 10,000 sightings reported to MUFON. That would be about 200 reports a week. How comprehensive could it have been? Where did he report his findings? He also claims that:
“even though a handful of pilots, military personnel and police officers did report seeing UFOs … such reports are too often sensationalized. Their reliability can only be established once a thorough Personal Credibility Assessment Investigation on them is completed”.
He is living in a dream world, but I notice he doesn’t offer to pay for work to be done. Nor does he mention that in Blue Book Special Report 14, a quality evaluation was done of all the 3201 sightings investigated by Battelle Memorial Institute. It was found that the better the quality of the sighting report the more likely it was unexplainable, the opposite of what one might expect from his faulty reasoning
Paris tries to make deep space travel far too dangerous to be happening routinely. He states (p.44):
”The universe is unbelievably violent and prone to extremes making interstellar travel precarious.”
He talks about how deadly gamma ray bursts can be, though he does admit none have been observed in the entire Milky Way. Is he unaware that 34,000 Americans were killed last year in automobile accidents? In recent years 10,000 Americans were killed each year by guns. Would he suggest that all cars should be removed from American roads and all guns be banned?

He dismisses the Hill case and Marjorie Fish’s star map work saying (page 91):
”Fish and the astronomical community agreed that the binary stars within the pattern were too close together to support life. Soon thereafter Fish released a statement that the correlation between the Hill map and Zeta Reticuli was highly unlikely.”
Both statements are totally false. I spoke with Marjorie’s surviving relatives and several astronomers. Of course he doesn’t reference “Captured! The Betty and Barney Hill UFO Experience.”

A lot of papers could be written about the foolishness of Paris’ anti interstellar travel rants. But I must ask, what is the reason behind them? Is somebody paying him to try to stem the increasing acceptance of alien visitations? Is he still connected with the Intelligence Community? Why is he so selective about his references? I honestly don’t believe he is stupid. He is certainly highly motivated, but why?

Nearly Half the Population Believes UFOs Could Be Alien Visitation

48 Percent Of Americans Believe UFOs Could Be ET Visitations

Lee Speigel By Lee Speigel

Nearly half the population believes UFOs could be a sign of extraterrestrial visitation.

A HuffPost/YouGov poll reveals that 48 percent of adults in the United States are open to the idea that alien spacecraft are observing our planet -- and just 35 percent outright reject the idea.

The poll was seen as vindication from the community of UFO researchers who often feel they are laughed off by government officials.

"It's always been intriguing to me how we act as though only kooks and quacks and little old ladies in tennis shoes believe in flying saucers. And it's never been true, at least for 30 or 40 years," said former nuclear physicist Stanton Friedman, who was the original civilian investigator of the events surrounding the legendary Roswell, NM, UFO crash of 1947.

Friedman is very outspoken on the idea that some UFOs are intelligently controlled extraterrestrial vehicles. . . .

New Breakthrough in Teleportation! | VIDEO

Will Teleportation Be Possible?

Teleported! Bits Vanish Here, Reappear There

By Jesse Emspak
news.discovery.com

For the first time, researchers have teleported 10,000 bits of information per second from point A to point B across a distance of about six millimeters and inside a solid state circuit, similar to a computer chip.

Although the accomplishment differs from teleporting mass, like a person — such as that seen on science fiction shows like Star Trek — the remarkable feat demonstrates what could be possible with a quantum computer.

The scientists, from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, report their findings in this week’s issue of Nature.

In their experiment, the team spaced three micron-sized electronic circuits on a seven-by-seven-millimeter computer chip. Two of the circuits worked as a sending mechanism, while the other served as the receiver. The scientists cooled the chip to near absolute zero and ran a current through the circuits. . . .

In Praise of Stephen Bassett and the Citizen Hearing on Disclosure

By Robbie Graham

Between April 29 and May 3, up to forty researchers and military/government witnesses will testify to the reality of the UFO phenomenon and extraterrestrial visitation before former members of the United States Congress and Senate. This is the Citizen Hearing on Disclosure. It is the brainchild of political activist Stephen Bassett.

As a researcher with a pro-ETH (Extraterrestrial Hypothesis) stance, I have always respected and supported Bassett’s work. His White House ‘We the People’ petitions were widely criticised by pundits in the UFO community, either for failing to bring about UFO Disclosure, or on the grounds that Disclosure is simply unachievable through public pressure. Such criticisms are myopic and defeatist.

In fact, Disclosure was never an immediate objective for Bassett’s White House petitions. His petitioning was successful in its elicitation of an historic response from the Obama Administration on the UFO/ET issue, for capturing the attention of international news media, and, in turn, for encouraging many people outside of the insular UFO community to consider the reality and implications of official UFO secrecy.

Bassett’s goal is to bring about Disclosure not through one explosive revolutionary act, but through a continuing series of high-profile but always respectful actions – be they in the form of petitions or press conferences – which serve constantly to remind those few in the corridors of power who hold the key to UFO secrecy that the public, although more often than not distracted by the trappings of everyday life and the inanities of modern culture, are ever savvy to the machinations of their ‘Truth Embargo’, and that our deep desire for Disclosure (in one form or another) grows stronger with each passing year. It’s a constant call for accountability and an essential reminder from the public to the UFO policy makers: “We’re watching you, and we’re waiting.”

Whether or not you agree with Bassett’s particular brand of UFO activism, whether or not you like the witnesses he presents at his press conferences or if you approve of the specific phrasing of his petitions, there can be no denying that his efforts in this field have raised popular awareness of the UFO/ET issue considerably in the 21st Century. Indeed, I would argue that Bassett has done more than any of his detractors in UFOlogy and Exopolitics – perhaps more than anyone ever – to directly encourage the mainstream media to more thoughtfully engage with one of history’s most important and misunderstood subjects. If he has not always been entirely successfully in this endeavour, it is not for lack of trying. And he has tried at his own considerable financial cost.

Stephen Bassett is a driven man. Whether he succeeds in ending the Truth Embargo remains to be seen, but he will never give up. I’m not a saluting kinda guy. But, Steve Bassett, I salute you.

Extraterrestrial Life (ET): The Evidence is Mounting Daily

Extraterrestrial Life (ET): The Evidence is Mounting

Evidence for ET is mounting daily, but not proven

By SETH BORENSTEIN
The Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- Lately, a handful of new discoveries make it seem more likely that we are not alone - that there is life somewhere else in the universe.

In the past several days, scientists have reported there are three times as many stars as they previously thought. Another group of researchers discovered a microbe can live on arsenic, expanding our understanding of how life can thrive under the harshest environments. And earlier this year, astronomers for the first time said they'd found a potentially habitable planet.

"The evidence is just getting stronger and stronger," said Carl Pilcher, director of NASA's Astrobiology Institute, which studies the origins, evolution and possibilities of life in the universe. "I think anybody looking at this evidence is going to say, 'There's got to be life out there.'"

Robert Salas: "Exopolitics, By Its Current Methods is Doing More Harm Than Good . . ."

Exopolitics
By Robert L. Salas
8-2-09

Robert Salas     Dr. Salla seems to be saying that we should take in and analyze all input from every source in order to fully understand both the scientific and social aspects of the phenomenon. First, I don’t know how that is possible and I don’t understand what he means by ‘flexible social scientific techniques.’ Does he mean accepting questionable witness testimony or documentation and using it to conjecture about a possible event? That seems to be what he has done with his Exopolitics Journal Article (July 1, 2009) - Kennedy’s Deadly Confrontation with the CIA & MJ-12.

In this ‘research article’ he links Kennedy’s death with his fight with the CIA over UFO information. I do not claim that this is false or true but I reject the approach to drawing such a conclusion or implying such a conclusion through these ‘flexible social scientific techniques.’ This is the kind of output from Exopolitics that I find objectionable because it creates fodder for those who would denigrate the UFO phenomenon.

I admit I had to look up the word existential in order to try and understand what he meant by his accusation of ‘existential hysteria.’ The American Heritage Dictionary (1982 edition) defines existentialism as: “A philosophy that emphasizes the uniqueness and isolation of the individual experience in a hostile or indifferent universe, regards human existence as unexplainable, and stresses freedom of choice and responsibility for the consequences of one’s acts.” While I would not necessarily associate myself with the first part of this definition, I do accept the concept that we have freedom of choice and are responsible for the consequences of our acts. I am normally not hysterical about that but I suppose I could be driven to hysteria under the right circumstances.

Michael SallaWhen I wrote my recent article criticizing Exopolitics I did not do it in a moment of poor judgment. Soon after the 2007 Exopolitics Conference, I contacted Dr. Salla by phone and in writing to express my disappointment with the Exopolitics movement and to emphasize that I no longer wanted to be associated with his group. I essentially gave him the same reasons then as I have done here.

In those two years, I have not changed my opinion that Exopolitics, by its current methods is doing more harm than good in the effort toward disclosure. I thought about it a long time before deciding that a public critique of Exopolitics was in order.

I am certainly not insisting on ‘strict scientific filtering mechanisms for witnesses and sources.’ No one has any control over what people will say or what they will present as evidence. What I do ask is that each of us be responsible for what we present as fact, fiction or other when we make public statements about the phenomenon.

In taking personal responsibility for improving the viability of the study of this phenomenon, we are all ‘Ufological gatekeepers.’

Nowhere in my dictionary did I find a definition for Exopolitics. I did find a definition for Exobiology. It states, “1. A branch of biology that deals with the search for and study of extraterrestrial living organisms.” Dr. Salla; unless you have access to an ET life form, what gives you the credentials to elaborate on the political implications of dealing with such life forms? Certainly, as many have done before you, you can speculate about what political implications disclosure would have on the world.

If you are talking about human politics surrounding the phenomenon, then you are dealing with assumptions and speculations. Is that what you mean by a nuanced approach to the truth of ETH? Walk into any bar in the world and you will hear that kind of ‘nuanced approach’ to the truth.

How About That ETH?

Aliens Approaching Earth
By Don Ledger
© 6-18-08

Don Ledger     Paul Kimball posted an article at his blog recently, which, for the most part, I agree with. He states:

"Of all the non - terrestrial theories that have been offered to explain the UFO phenomenon, the extraterrestrial hypothesis (ETH) has always seemed the most plausible one to me. I don't think it's been proved, but I think it's a better bet than the others on offer when one looks at the evidence, and the science. The evidence seems to indicate that at least some UFO cases represent a non - human intelligence at work."

Kimball goes on to say that science tends to promote the idea that there is intelligent life, elsewhere in our galaxy or the universe. He also mentions that he has been hard on some ETH supporters amongst "Ufologists" because the "H" in ETH represents a hypothesis.

And he is right. The ETH is a theory, like Black Holes, the Big Bang Theory [a very flawed theory it seems] and Worm Holes and M - branes and multiple universes. Relativity is a theory - known as the Theory of Relativity - but this one is the holy grail of physics and not to be considered anything but fact … apparently. All of the above theories might in fact have some bearing on the
ETH incidentally.

Kimball supposes that much of today's ETH debate among "Ufologists" stems back to Keyhoe and the thinking back then; probably so, but it’s not my thinking.

I have stated many times that, to my mind, this need to narrow down the ETH as some kind of point - to - point contact is wrong. By point - to - point I mean their planet and our planet; that somehow "they" learned of our existence and came here, not to make contact, but to study us. This thinking seems to me to want to maintain two "miracles" in one universe. It's a little easier to handle that than perhaps a galaxy teeming with life particularly if you are of the religious bent that favors the egocentric notion of man being the center of God's universe. Y'all know I am not of a religious bent. If you don't then you haven't been paying attention.

Kimball refers to nuts and bolts Ufologists and the," ... reductionist approach that has been adopted by the nuts - and - bolts crowd, on the other hand, which seeks to make potential alien life over unto our own image, lacks vision"

I consider myself nuts - and - bolts though these days this might more properly described as more of a "technologically advanced intelligently [HI or AI] controlled craft", probably because of my association with aviation.

I don't subscribe to the premise that ETI is in our image however. That too smacks of religious overtones; but to some degree there might be evidence to support certain traits among sentient beings, which have evolved under similar conditions such as our own. Naturally there is the bias we have in favor of similar stature and two of everything like arms and legs and eyes but that has been burned into us by Hollywood who has difficulty finding actors with other traits that could be employed when an alien is needed on the set; at least up to now. CGI will and does let the artist's imagination run wild.

Maybe 40 years ago I might have believed that the point - to - point contact from some planet around a nearby star with Earth was the way things "really" were but not now.

My take on it is this: The universe has been around for 14.7 billion years; at least that's the current figure, or galaxy some 8 or 9 billion years; that is plenty of time for thousands or millions or space faring civilizations to have evolved and ranged out into space, like we did. It allows more than enough time for them to do more than range locally, however.

Technological evolution being what it is would have accelerated the same as our own, building on itself and feeding on itself, changing outmoded technology for the new and changing "their" societies as it has done here. But more than that it would have changed space travel in ways that we can't even imagine right now.

How often has "science and technology" come up with something new because someone thought outside the box. Kirk's communicator was an idea dreamed up by either Gene Roddenberry or one of his writers but it impressed a teenager who later developed the first crude version of that which has developed into the cell phones of today; and not just to communicate verbally but textually as well with pictures and data streaming. And that's just this year's models.

IBM engineers came up with the modular computer design but it took a couple of guys like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs to set the world on its ass and provide us with these machines and the CIA to help out with the Internet; low grade stuff really when you consider the leaps that must have been made to travel through whole galaxies.

I wonder, did they surge forward and perhaps travel to their satellite moons then slip back into mediocrity only to re - invent the same primitive space technology as we did of the 1960s for the 2020s? If we are to believe that the ETH has value then obviously they did not.

My thinking is that various intelligences have been ranging through this galaxy for hundreds of millions of years. If I'm right then perhaps one of them happened across out pretty, little, blue planet, took a look and reported back. "Found another one!"

Greech on planet Frob - one of 6,000 in the Gert Clique -learned of this new planet (after poring over some million year old documents in the dead files) which had a peculiar life form, some of which peed standing while the others did it sitting down. Amazing, Greech wondered...they peed?

Greech just happened to be doing its dissertation at Xzzryq U on new evolving life forms so it [Greech was genderless after all] applied for and got a low level grant that would allow a few thousand craft to bug the crap out of the life forms on that planet for 20 or 30,000 of that planets revolutions around its star. It was then discovered that virtually all of one species defecated sitting down. The stock on anal probes went through the roof on Frob when this came to light.

The above is nonsense of course - at least I think it is - but the idea that Earth was discovered by some deep ranging mission through the Cosmos, perhaps thousands of years ago might just be the case in my estimation.

I would like to think that we eventually reach a plane of existence where war is a thing of the past or restricted to planets where it can be practiced - like a hobby - without pissing everyone else off; where the whole raison - d'etre is to get out there and explore, discover, learn and try to figure out why? I suspect that if life has been ranging through this universe for billions of years, those spacefarers have likely found or punched into other universes as well.

Paul Kimball relates that Michio Kaku evoked the analogy of us being as ants to some super intelligence. Somehow I don't think this would be the case. But Kaku might be right about us being below the radar of some super intelligence, like ants to ourselves; but it should not be forgotten that there are still many entomologists around the world studying ants, their structures and their societies. The anal probes must be really tiny, though. [Note, I am not making light of the abduction phenomenon - I have too many friends, acquaintances and relatives who have claimed the experience.]
