Jet Interceptors Chase UFOs in D.C. Skies | UFO CHRONICLE – 1952

Jet fighters of the Eastern Interceptor Command last night were alerted to reach the Washington area "in a matter of minutes" if "Flying Saucers" paid a second visit within 24 hours.

The jets roared into action late Saturday night when a new invasion of "Saucers" was picked up on radar here.

Two jet pilots, sent up by the Air force to investigate the mysterious objects, pursued the saucers but were unable to make contact before they disappeared.

The Air Force announced that the strange phenomenon, "between four and twelve in number," were first sighted at 9:08 p.m. Saturday by radar operators at the CAA air route traffic control center at National Airport.

demanded answers. Were these unexplained radar blips, crafts that in some cases outran jets, part of a nuclear-armed Soviet invasion—a very real threat at the height of the Red Scare? Or were they evidence of something far more mysterious?

The Washington, D.C. sightings of July 1952, also known as “the Big Flap,” hold a special place in the history of unidentified flying objects. Major American newspapers were reporting multiple credible sightings by civilian and military radar operators and pilots—so many that a special intelligence unit of the U.S. Air Force was sent in to investigate.

The Air Defense Command alerted jet pilots today to take off instantly in pursuit of any "Flying Saucers" sighted anywhere in the country.

It acted after F-94 jets unsuccessfully chased "glowing white lights" seen in this area Saturday night.

The new batch of sacuer reports included unexplained appearances on radar screens, but the Air force remained skeptical. It said the reports have shown "no pattern which would indicate the objects are being controlled by a reasonable body."
