. . . We discovered the National UFO Reporting Center got up to 200 calls between News Year's Eve and January 1 -- all reporting orange-reddish lights in the sky.

"Clearly the reports that have come in here in the past 40 hours have virtually nothing to do with fireworks," said Peter Davenport, the Director of the National UFO Reporting Center.

Davenport says in the past 19 months he's received over 5,000 similar calls.

"They seem to defy any similarity to terrestrial aircrafts we just don't know what they are," Davenport said.

Davenport says a small percentage of these cases can be Chinese lanterns or hot air balloons -- but he isn't convinced they all are.

"At least we feel like we're not seeing things, you know, and it's been seen somewhere else," Hoffman said.

Our meteorologists say they don't believe weather nor anything in space caused the lights in our area. . . .

UFOs Sighted Over Virginia
ASHBURN, VA. (WJLA) - It makes sense to see the sky light up on New Year's Eve, except an Ashburn man says he didn't see fireworks, but possibly a UFO.

Chris Smith doesn’t live far from Dulles and is used to seeing airplanes fly above.

“You couldn’t help but see it in the sky, it was that bright,” he says.

Smith grabbed his cell phone and started recording. He captured two lights two lights sitting in the sky and barely moving. Intrigued, he called for his children.

“I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing,” says his son, Markus, 10.

Markus thought it could be a new type of rocket or flares.

“It was cool and kind of scary,” says Smith's daughter, Summer.

“They really moved like nothing else in the sky.”

Smith was in complete disbelief.

UFO sightings in Sweden lit up New Year’s Day, causing the alien hunters to investigate.

As previously reported by The Inquisitr, many reported UFO sightings in California in the same time frame although the FAA didn’t see anything.

UFO Investigator Tobias Lindgren of the non-profit group UFO-Sweden claims UFO sightings are common during New Year’s:
“A lot of the reports during New Year are triggered by the Thai lanterns. Every year, I investigate between 50 and 60 sightings. I expect to have a lot to do this year, too. People think the lanterns are UFOs, but I recognize them immediately. Some people are very relieved when they find out."
UFO-Sweden claims their objective is to “turn the UFO subject into an established and respected field of research.”

Sweden’s UFO sightings probably should have lessened this year because the government implemented a new law regulating the release of hot air lanterns:
“Since November 1, Swedes no longer need a permit to launch the hot air born lanterns into the night sky. Anyone living within 100 metres of any of the main airports, however, must warn flight control they want to send the Khom Loy lanterns skywards.” . . .
