NASA has solved a 43-year-old mystery by finally locating Apollo 16’s rocket booster, the third stage of a Saturn V rocket that crash landed on the moon in 1972.

High-res images of the spacecraft were captured by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), launched in 2009 and unveiled by US space agency earlier this month.

The crash site, which looks like a popped pimple on the man in the moon's face, is in the Mare Insularum neighborhood, about 160 miles southwest of the Copernicus Crater. [...]

Mystery Bright Spots on Dwarf Planet, 'Ceres' Solved

Scientists have finally cracked the mystery of the unexplained lights on the dwarf planet Ceres that were speculated to be everything from alien cities to ice volcanoes.

After months of research gathered from the Dawn spacecraft, two new studies published in the journal "Nature" are shedding new light on what the 130 bright spots observed on Ceres could be and the surprising place where the dwarf planet may have formed.

In the first study, scientists determined those unusual areas of brightness are likely deposits of a salty substance comprised of magnesium sulfate, similar to epsom salt on Earth. The deposits were likely left when water-ice sublimated, scientists said. The impact from asteroids would have then unearthed the salty mixture, according to the study.

The second study reported the detection of ammonia-rich clays, suggesting Ceres may have not formed in the asteroid belt and instead may have been born in the outer solar system.

After Fifty Years, Kecksburg UFO Mystery Solved?

Fifty Years, Kecksburg UFO Mystery Solved?

By Dan Majors
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
12-6-15

Fifty years after the famous Kecksburg UFO streaked across the December sky and landed in a wooded hollow, two Westmoreland County researchers have put forth a theory that they say explains it.

The unidentified flying object that came down Dec. 9, 1965, they say, was a General Electric Mark 2 Re-entry Vehicle that had been launched by the Air Force as a spy satellite, but fell out of orbit.

Authorities at the time, however, said it was a meteorite. That official claim has been challenged but never changed.

Researchers consider the Kecksburg UFO one of the great unsolved mysteries, and people in the tiny town of Kecksburg still talk about it. Witnesses who saw it — before members of the military swooped in and took it away — say it was not a meteor but a craft of some kind.

The years have muddled a few recollections, but accounts at the time agree on several points.

It was 4:47 p.m. when it came out of the sky from the northwest, a flaming object from over Canada, Ohio and into Western Pennsylvania. It appeared to be guided, changing its path and making a level descent away from residential areas and into the woods of Kecksburg.

The first people on the scene said it was partly buried in the ground. It was made of metal, between 10 and 12 feet long, and generally shaped like an acorn. There were strange markings on a band near the bottom that resembled hieroglyphics. [...]

Scientists Unravel Mystery of Death Valley's Moving Rocks

By www.nbcnews.com

The first witnesses to an enduring natural mystery are an engineer, a biologist and a planetary scientist who met thanks to a remote weather station.

This odd group has captured the first video footage of Death Valley's sailing stones creeping across Racetrack Playa. For a century, these eerie rocks and their long, graceful trails have stumped visitors and scientists. The boulders of black dolomite appear to move on their own, sliding uphill across the playa's flat lakebed. The trails are the only evidence the rocks move. No one has ever seen them set sail.

Lacking direct evidence, explanations for this geologic puzzle ran the gamut, from Earth's magnetic field to gale-force winds to slippery algae. Now, with video, time-lapse photographs and GPS tracking of Racetrack Playa's moving rocks, the mystery has finally been solved.

One of the most enduring mysteries of the Cold War – the disappearance of US pilot William Schaffner in a secret RAF exercise above the North Sea – has finally been laid to rest.

Captain Scaffner was just 28 years old when his RAF Lightning - call-sign Foxtrot 94 – crashed into the sea off Flamborough Head in Yorkshire one stormy night in September 1970.

Now his youngest son Michael has told the full tragic story of his father’s death in an exclusive interview with Ian Black for the monthly magazine FlyPast (July).

Michael Schaffner and his brothers were given access to classified RAF files on the loss of Lightning XS894 after they read internet rumours that claimed the USAF exchange pilot died in a secret operation to intercept UFOs. . . .

Confirmed! Crop Circle Mystery Solved

Turns out, it wasn't an alien creation.

We now know the source of the mysterious crop circle that turned up in the small town of Chualar, about two hours south of San Francisco. And it turns out a lot of the speculation about what the viral photo might be was correct.

NBC Bay Area was originally tipped off by an anonymous source, who said Silicon Valley chipmaker Nvidia was behind the crop circle that was first spotted toward the end of 2013 by a photographer named Julie Belanger. We now have confirmation from the inside. The company plowed through the farm to (eventually) get publicity for their new mobile chip. Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang detailed how the company came to create the circle that got so much attention press conference Sunday night at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, saying he had told his marketing department to find a way to generate buzz about the chip on a shoe-string budget. . . .

Great Red Spot On Jupiter, Mystery Finally Solved? | VIDEO

Jupiter's Red Spot

The mystery of why Jupiter's Great Red Spot did not vanish centuries ago may now be solved, and the findings could help reveal more clues about the vortices in Earth's oceans and the nurseries of stars and planets, researchers say.

The Great Red Spot is the most noticeable feature on Jupiter's surface — a storm about 12,400 miles (20,000 kilometers) long and 7,500 miles (12,000 km) wide, about two to three times larger than Earth. Winds at its oval edges can reach up to 425 mph (680 km/h). This giant storm was first recorded in 1831 but may have first been discovered in 1665.

"Based on current theories, the Great Red Spot should have disappeared after several decades," researcher Pedram Hassanzadeh, a geophysical fluid dynamicist at Harvard University, said in a statement. "Instead, it has been there for hundreds of years."

Vortices like the Great Red Spot can dissipate because of many factors. For instance, waves and turbulence in and around the storm sap its winds of energy. It also loses energy by radiating heat. Moreover, the Great Red Spot rests between two powerful jet streams in Jupiter's atmosphere that flow in opposite directions and may slow down its spinning. . . .

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Over the past year and a half, a UFO has taken Lubbock by storm.

In May 2012, a southeast Lubbock resident captured some flashing lights on video camera. This past weekend, fans at the Jones AT&T stadium wondered what was floating outside the stadium. Today we have the answer.

"It's six electric motors that are all connected together with stabilization electronics running through them. They run off two batteries that are 14.8 volts each - so a little stronger than the battery in your car," said Kris Barton. He is the owner of Swing Wing Productions and the pilot of this mystery object.

"We built it about two years ago and we're constantly modifying it, trying to get it to work the way we want it and constantly making changes for whatever it is we're shooting or taking pictures of."

The multi-rotor, as Kris calls it, allows him to take aerial photos, the reason he was at Jones AT&T stadium on Saturday night.

"Main locations are just right here around Texas. We started in Austin and just moved back to Lubbock. . . .

East Coast Dolphin Deaths Likely Due To Measles-Like Virus, NOAA Officials Say

By Nick Visser

A massive string of dead dolphins along the East Coast is most likely due to cetacean morbillivirus, a marine strain of a virus similar to measles, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

At least 333 bottlenose dolphins have been found dead from New York to North Carolina, officials said during a Tuesday press conference. The strandings peak in Virginia, where 174 carcasses have washed ashore. The agency declared the die-off an "unusual mortality event" earlier this month.

Looking at a chart of past years, death rates are nine-times higher than usual. . . .

Hindenburg Mystery Solved After 76 Years

By Jonathan Owen

Scientists believe that a series of events sparked by static electricity lead to the 1937 explosion

The dream was a fleet of hydrogen-filled airships criss-crossing the globe, silvered hulls shining in the sunlight. And for a while the fantasy became reality, For the Hindenburg was the Concorde of its day – able to cross the Atlantic in about three days, twice as fast as going by sea.

With nearly 100 on board, the 245m airship was preparing to land at Lakehurst, New Jersey, on 6 May 1937, when the age of airship travel ended. In front of horrified onlookers, the Hindenburg exploded and plunged to the ground in flames. Thirty-five of those on board died.

Now, 76 years later, a team of experts claims to have solved one of the greatest mysteries of the 20th century: the real cause of the Hindenburg air disaster. And they name static electricity as the culprit. . . .
