18,000 UFO Sightings Visualized on a World Map

There are about 70,000 reported UFO sightings every year worldwide. And whether or not you believe in their validity, we’ve all met someone who is certain they’ve spotted something suspicious.

To gain a larger understanding of what these UFO sightings mean in the grand scheme, the artist Stepchild GPU has visualized data from over 18,000 reported sightings in his haunting Alien Nation data visualization. (Stepchild CPU is self-described as “a highly advanced graphics processing unit from Silicon Valley, programmed in the year 1991,” so it’s no surprise that the map is a data-based beauty.)

The maps visualize data both according to sightings (green dots) and duration of sightings (white dots). As you can see, the United States lights up like a Christmas tree compared to the rest of the world. Could these sightings be experimental U.S. government planes or weather balloons? Does America really get more UFOs, or do a lot of Americans search out reasons to see ourselves as the center of the universe? [...]

The FindTheBest map, seen above, is an attempt to show one version of how UFO sightings -- those that are reported -- might look on a map.

     The truth is out there -- and with the right roadmap, perhaps you can find it.

UFOs have been reported in every corner of the country. Of course, some spots are better than others, if you want to see strange objects in the sky. But if you're hunting for a close encounter, this map may only be a starting point to lead you in the right direction.

"We downloaded UFO sightings from the National UFO Reporting Center and took all of the locations and tried to standardize them," said Lane Allison, product manager of FindTheBest, a California-based technology company that collects and interprets data.

The FindTheBest map, seen above, is an attempt to show one version of how UFO sightings -- those that are reported -- might look on a map. The researchers culled information from over 61,000 reports, narrowing it down to nearly 39,000 reports from which they created their map visualization.

If you move your mouse across either version of the above interactive map -- UFO Sightings or UFO Sightings Per Capita -- everywhere the mouse lands will give you very detailed information about that particular place in America.

But is that regional data enough to offer a map that shows accurate numbers and, therefore, reliable clues as to how hot a UFO "hot spot" is? . . .

    The American Meteor Society has received over 200 reports of a bright fireball on Monday evening, November 3, 2014. It was observed over a large portion of the eastern USA stretching from Georgia northward to Ohio. This event occurred near 6:23pm eastern standard time or 23:23 Universal Time. The triangle of apparent alien activity runs from Land's End to Falmouth bay to St Ives Bay.

Cornwall has the highest number of sightings of UFOs in the country according to the latest research. . . .

NASA Maps Dangerous Asteroids That May Threaten Earth

      If you've seen films like "Armageddon," you know the potential threat asteroids can be for Earth. To meet that threat, NASA has built a map like no other: a plot of every dangerous asteroid that could potentially endanger our planet … at least the ones we know about.

NASA released the new map of "potentially hazardous asteroids" on Aug. 2 in a post to its online Planetary Photojournal overseen by the agency's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. The map shows the orbital paths of more than 1,400 asteroids known creep too close to Earth for comfort. None of the asteroids mapped pose an impact threat to Earth within the next 100 years, agency officials said.

"These are the asteroids considered hazardous because they are fairly large (at least 460 feet or 140 meters in size), and because they follow orbits that pass close to the Earth's orbit (within 4.7 million miles or 7.5 million kilometers)," NASA officials explained in the image description. . . .

      Still trying to find your place in the world? How about the universe?

An international team of astronomers and astrophysicists have created a video spotlighting their new 3-D map of the known universe. The map was created from a collection of galaxy redshifts -- observations of light emitted from galaxies as they move away from the earth.

"In terms of moving -- pardon the pun -- pictures, this is by far the best I have seen among numerous motion pictures showing where we are at, literally and figuratively, in the biggest picture of all," Ian Steer, co-leader of NASA/IPAC's Extragalactic Database project, commented on the video on Vimeo.

As seen in the video, the map shows the location of all the visible galaxies in our universe as far away as 340 million light-years. . . .
