Chilean Navy 'UFO' Video Explained?

This "UFO" observed on infrared video by the Chilean Navy leaving contrails is probably a plane leaving aerodynamic contrails; probably the LA330, which was in the right place, time heading and altitude (20,00ft).

Based on analysis by @Trailblazer, @Trailspotter, myself, and others, The plane that seems to fit best is LA330, a two engined A320, which was reported to be climbing through 20,000 feet at that exact visual position at 14:01:39. It was actually 65 miles away, not 35-50. This explain why it was not seen on radar (the actual plane was on radar, just not where they thought it was).

     Yesterday, I broke the news that Skeptoid’s Brian Dunning was sentenced to 15 months in prison for wire fraud after previously pleading guilty. Since then, I’ve received a number of complaints from people in the skeptic community who believe that it was wrong for me to report on this, that Dunning was set up, that he is guilty but not that guilty, and/or that it’s wrong for me to be glad that he’s going to prison.

This morning, I read Dunning’s own defense, which I see being passed around amongst skeptics, many of whom seem to accept it as a valid explanation and a confirmation that this is all a big mistake.

One of the reasons why I enjoy skepticism as a tool is because it does not (or should not) discriminate. I tend to be equally skeptical of things I like or agree with – sometimes more skeptical, because the things we want to believe are the easiest things to believe, regardless of whether they are true.

That’s one reason why I am very skeptical of other skeptics. The other reason is because I believe that if the skeptical movement wants to be taken seriously as a force that genuinely cares about helping people, about protecting them from scam artists, we need to make sure that the people who speak for us are honest and forthright and above all else ethical. If a person lacks those traits, I cannot in good conscience recommend their work to others. This doesn’t mean that leaders need to be perfect, or that I always need to agree with them: it only means that they cannot demonstrate to me a willful interest in manipulating the truth for their own benefit. It’s the reason why I can no longer recommend any of Ben Radford’s work after finding he purposely misrepresented scientific studies to suit his interests, and it’s the reason why I stopped promoting Brian Dunning’s work once I realized he admitted to stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars. . . .

     It's taken over two weeks for the Air Force to suggest that a UFO reported over Massachusetts may have only been a huge cargo plane, but even they're not sure.

Back on Jan. 8, residents of Amherst and Pelham reported a low-flying unidentified triangular or diamond-shaped object moving slowly and silently between 5:45 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., according to the Daily Hampshire Gazette.

"The only aircraft that was operating in the area was a military aircraft doing practice approaches to Westover (Air Reserve Base)," FAA spokesman James Peters told the Gazette.

Bradley International Airport, in Windsor Locks, Conn., is responsible for radar reports covering western Massachusetts, and they informed the newspaper that there was nothing unusual in the sky above the Amherst-Pelham area during the time period when the UFO was seen.

The Associated Press reports that a Westover spokesman first said they had no record of any aircraft over Amherst, but later said there was something in the air. . . .

      AMHERST — The Federal Aviation Administration says a military aircraft was flying over Amherst Jan. 8 when residents reported seeing a mysterious object flying silently overhead.

However, a spokesman for an area military base said descriptions from town residents don’t match with what he knows of the aircraft.

Residents in the Amherst and Pelham area reported that between 5:45 and 6:30 p.m. a triangular or diamond-shaped aircraft — about the size of two or three cars, by one account — appeared to travel silently, slowly and unusually low over the area.

After receiving an inquiry from the Gazette, officials at an FAA facility at Bradley International Airport, which provides radar coverage for western Massachusetts, reviewed radar data in the Amherst-Pelham area for Jan. 8 from 5:45 to 6:15 p.m., said James Peters, a spokesman for the FAA.

“The only aircraft that was operating in the area was a military aircraft doing practice approaches to Westover (Air Reserve Base),” Peters wrote in an email to the Gazette.

Westover’s chief of public affairs, Lt. Col. James Bishop, initially said on Jan. 9 that the base had no record of an aircraft flying in the area after checking with the on-duty controller. . . .

BREAKING NEWS: Military Offers Explanation For Stephenville UFO Reports

     FORT WORTH, Texas -- Nearly two weeks after UFOs were reported over Stephenville, the U.S. military has offered an explanation as to the source of the mysterious lights.

Maj. Karl Lewis, a spokesman for the 301st Fighter Wing at the Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base, said in a news release that an "error was made regarding the reported training activity of military aircraft" and that "10 F-16s from the 457th Fighter Squadron were performing training operations in the Brownwood Military Operating Area."

Lewis had previously said there were no F-16s or other aircraft from the base in the area the night many of the sightings were reported.

Officials now report the aircraft were airborne from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. January 8 in the MOA, which is an area designated for military training, and in this case includes airspace above Erath County.

On Saturday, interviewers with the Mutual UFO Network met with about 200 people who said they saw something mysterious in the night skies over Stephenville in late December and early January. Witnesses have described the object as silent, large and with bright lights flying low and fast.

Several witnesses also reported seeing fighter jets chasing the object.

James Huse, a retired electronics technician, said what he saw on Jan. 8 was neither a helicopter nor a plane while pilot Steve Allen, of Glen Rose, said the lights he saw while sitting around a campfire were brighter than the glare from welding.

"The first time we saw it, the duration was three minutes; then it started slowing down and passed us, and the lights in the back reformed into an arc shape, and they would flash on and off with no particular pattern," he said. "Then those changed into two vertical lines. It was totally silent."
