UFOs in the Mainstream Media: Washington Post Science Writer Reveals Her Unfamiliarity with the Facts

Regarding WAPO science writer Sarah Kaplan’s recent review of scientific commentary on the UFO phenomenon, she seems oblivious to a basic truth: There is a distinct and fundamental difference between merely having an opinion, and having an informed opinion, on any given topic. This holds true for scientists and laypersons alike. Because very, very few scientists have actually studied the UFO phenomenon before holding forth, their pronouncements about it must be viewed for what they really are: Pontification with little or no data to support their dismissive assessments.

Granted, while Kaplan mentions the investigative efforts of astronomer Dr. J. Allen Hynek—whose initial skepticism about UFOs was eventually discarded, after he analyzed a number of genuinely inexplicable sighting reports compiled by the U.S. Air Force during the 1960s—she devotes most of her article to touting the demonstrably uninformed utterances of UFO skeptics such as physicist Enrico Fermi and SETI specialist Jill Tartar.

Perhaps most telling, Kaplan completely ignores (or is unaware of) the published remarks of the late Dr. James McDonald, one of only a handful of physicists who actually engaged in UFO research, who wrote,
“From time to time in the history of science, situations have arisen in which a problem of ultimately enormous importance went begging for adequate attention simply because that problem appeared to involve phenomena so far outside the current bounds of scientific knowledge that it was not even regarded as a legitimate subject of serious scientific concern. That is precisely the situation in which the UFO problem now lies. One of the principal results of my own recent intensive study of the UFO enigma is this: I have become convinced that the scientific community, not only in this country but throughout the world, has been casually ignoring as nonsense a matter of extraordinary scientific importance.”1

—Dr. James E. McDonald
Senior Physicist, Institute of Atmospheric Physics
Professor of Meteorology, University of Arizona
McDonald was especially unhappy with the initial skepticism exhibited by Dr. Hynek during his tenure as scientific consultant to the USAF’s chief UFO project, Blue Book. After personally reviewing a large quantity of UFO reports held by the U.S. Air Force at Wright-Patterson AFB, McDonald wrote, “…There are hundreds of good cases in the Air Force files that should have led to top-level scientific scrutiny of [UFOs] years ago, yet these cases have been swept under the rug in a most disturbing way by Project Blue Book investigators and their consultants.”2

Despite, or perhaps because of, the Air Force’s ongoing attempts to suppress the frequently high-quality data on UFOs it collected, McDonald began to investigate the phenomenon on his own time and at his own expense, while ignoring the very real risk to his scientific reputation.

This diligence paid off and, by 1968, McDonald was widely regarded—although not among his still-dubious peers—as one of the world’s leading scientific experts on UFOs. Consequently, he was invited to address the United States Congress on the subject, during hearings held that year. McDonald’s full statement before the House Committee on Science and Astronautics, presented on July 29th, may be found in the U.S. Congressional Record, as well as on the Internet.3

While acknowledging that the overwhelming majority of UFO sightings undoubtedly had prosaic explanations, and that a great many questions about the phenomenon remained unanswered, McDonald succinctly summarized his conclusions regarding the most credible of the unexplained cases: “My own present opinion, based on two years of careful study, is that UFOs are probably extraterrestrial devices engaged in something that might very tentatively be termed ‘surveillance.’” 4

Although this was merely an opinion, it was after all an informed opinion on UFOs, something very few other scientists could offer, then or now. Many of McDonald’s published papers, private research notes, and personal letters relating to his investigations of the UFO phenomenon are now accessible at the University of Arizona, providing insight into the cautious reasoning underlying his dramatic conclusions.

While most scientists (and science writers) are quick to dismiss as impossible the idea that UFOs are alien spacecraft, very few of them will ever make the effort to learn whether any evidence exists to suggest otherwise. Instead, they merely continue to assert that, as an idea, it simply does not work.

This self-created impasse was mentioned by McDonald in his oral statement to Congress: “We have tended to ignore [the UFO phenomenon] because we didn't think it made sense. It definitely defies any explanation, and hence the situation has evolved where we can’t get going because we aren’t already going. The scientific community as a whole won’t take this problem seriously because it doesn't have scientific data. They want instrumental data. Why don't they have instrumental data? Because the scientists don’t take it seriously enough to get the scientific data. It is like the 20-year-old who can’t get a job because he lacks experience, and he lacks experience because he hasn’t had a job. In the same way you find the scientist wishing you would give him good hard meter readings and magnetometer traces, and so on. But we don’t have [those data] yet because the collective body of scientists, including myself, have ignored UFOs.” 5

In other words, most scientists reject outright the validity of UFO research, refuse to engage in it, and deliberately ignore the intriguing data compiled by a handful of their more inquisitive, less-biased peers. If this were not enough, despite their profound unfamiliarity with the subject, many of these same intransigent individuals preach about UFOs in the most shameless and presumptuous manner. If they were to apply this same “methodology” to their own research, their colleagues might justifiably consider their conduct incompetent, if not fraudulent. Nevertheless, it is rare to hear a scientist speak knowledgeably about the UFO phenomenon and rarer still to find one who has actually studied it.

The Never-Ending Search for UFOs and Extraterrestrial Intelligence

The Never-Ending Search for UFOs and Extraterrestrial Intelligence

Back in 1950, during a lunch break at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, several scientists were trading wisecracks about a recent spate of UFO reports when Nobel Prize-winning physicist Enrico Fermi offered an observation that has echoed through the decades. Given the number of places where life could exist in the vast universe, and

the length of time it has had to evolve, the skies ought to be teeming with beings from advanced, space-faring civilizations — but nothing incontrovertible has shown up. You have to wonder, as Fermi did, “Where is everybody?”

His colleagues chuckled, but the “Fermi paradox” perfectly frames the profound absurdity of the search for life beyond Earth. Humans have beamed beacons into space, robotically visited every world in the solar system and discovered thousands of planets circling stars far from our own. Yet all we’ve encountered is a chilly void.

Still, the possibility that something is out there calls to us.

Three new books approach the mystery from distinctly different perspectives: the unlikely believer in UFOs, the visionary dedicated to rigorous investigation and the cadre of scientists who still plug away at the problem, probing the universe for an answer.

If the X-Files were real, Mulder and Scully would frequent the Treasure State. Although most people imagine Roswell, Area 51 and a certain claw machine in Toy Story whenever little green men come up in conversation, Montana has certainly earned its place in extraterrestrial culture.

Montana’s history with aliens dates back well into the ‘40s. Great Falls is home to one of the most revered UFO videos ever shot, while crop circles and contact experiences have frequented the state through the last decade.

Author Joan Bird said that with all the evidence she’s put together in her new book, Montana might just be one of the most authentic locations for extraterrestrial activity in the world.

“I feel like I’m lifting a lid,” Bird said, “to make it comfortable and safe for these people to come out and talk about their experiences.”

Her book, “Montana UFOs and Extraterrestrials” details the history of some of the best unexplained happenings in the Big Sky. Bird presented a lecture to a packed conference room during last week’s Festival of the Book, sharing her findings and ruminations on humanity’s place in the universe. Bird has a doctorate in zoology from the University of Montana, but was drawn to UFOs after a rash of unexplainable crop circles appeared in the Flathead Valley in the late ‘90s and early ‘00s. . . .

Montana UFOs and Extraterrestrials

Before my wife and I were married, we were driving back to Nacogdoches, Texas, after a picnic at Oil Springs late one afternoon when we saw a distant object slowly ascend into the sky, the way a weather balloon might. Then it did something no weather balloon has ever done: It came to dead stop, then took off like a jet airplane, disappearing into the distance.

UFO? Well, it certainly appeared to be an object. It was flying. And it was unidentified, at least by us.

But was there anything more to it than the bright confusion of a late afternoon, compounded by youth and susceptibility? Such unanswerable questions lie at the heart of “Montana UFOs and Extraterrestrials,” a new book by Joan Bird that takes a detailed look at reports of space aliens and flying objects in the Montana area.

Ms. Bird, who has worked as a conservation biologist and earned a doctorate in zoology and animal behavior, falls squarely into the camp of those who believe that odd occurrences in Montana skies may be attributable to visitors from other planets. Moreover, she finds the federal government perfectly capable of doing its best to hide evidence that she is right. . . .

'Montana UFOs': Helena Author Traces History of Sights in State

Helena author Joan Bird has a Ph.D. in zoology, and her career has been dedicated to the natural world, including work for the Montana Environmental Information Center, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, and the Nature Conservancy.

In her new book, she makes her case for the existence of phenomena born far from the Treasure State’s terra firma: extraterrestrial lifeforms.

Bird writes in the introduction to “Montana UFOs and Extraterrestrials” that, although she’s a scientist, she is comfortable with the notion that there are some things science just can’t explain. She’s also had a lifelong fascination with bits of information that don’t seem to belong. “Unidentified flying objects,” or UFOs, certainly fall into that category.

That attitude led Bird to a field known among its practitioners as “ufology,” and ultimately to the writing of “Montana UFOs.”

Montana, it turns out, has been the scene of some of the most significant unexplained occurrences involving UFOs, dating back more than 70 years. Two in particular, a 15-second, color film shot by Nick Mariana in Great Falls on Aug. 15, 1950, showing two silvery spheres in flight; and an incident in 1967 in which 10 Minuteman missiles were deactivated in their silos while a UFO hovered overhead, are considered of primary significance. . . .

Wanaque UFO

Warped geometry, weak brane

The Project Blue Book files are chock full o’ reports involving UFO interaction with water, and naturally most are pretty bizarre. But none have more thoroughly riveted Bob Schroeder than the so-called Wanaque Incident in 1966.

This one was reported by a New Jersey cop, back in the day when an ongoing government study gave Americans cover to talk about this stuff without being made to feel like wackos. Responding to a dispatch call about a sighting in the Wanaque Reservoir area one autumn evening, Sgt. Ben Thompson watched in awe as a massive object lit the night sky over the lake. There were other witnesses as well, but what Thompson saw was a real show-stopper. His words:

“As it went over the trees — which would be on the mountain to the west — it would sort of pull the tops of the trees together. In other words, it had sort of a suction effect. . . . And it also pulled the water upward. It was sucked upward. And when this thing flew away from the area, the water would just settle right down again.”

That got Schroeder to thinking. If UFOs involve anti-gravity, as one popular theory holds, shouldn’t the cop have seen reverse effects on the environment, such as downward pressures on trees, grass, water, whatever? “What we’re seeing instead,” he says from his home in Sudbury, Mass., “are attractive fields, not repulsive fields.”

Schroeder found other examples of UFOs exerting forces of attraction on nearby objects, from steel grating to sand and stones. But he couldn’t really share his curiosity with colleagues at Hewlett-Packard, where he spent 26 years in operations and product management, lest they think him a wacko. But now, in retirement, he’s gone the self-publishing route and released a book called Solving the UFO Enigma: How Modern Physics is Revealing the Technology of UFOs.

Schroeder says discoveries inside supercolliders have led him to an inferential theory about UFOs — particularly brightly lit ones — that can actually be tested using spectrometers. De Void doesn’t usually turn the floor over to someone else, but De Void lacks the vocabulary to coherently paraphrase Schroeder’s email. So take a minute and see if this makes any sense:
“2). In the last two decades modern physics is pointing toward the existence of 4-D space-time membranes floating in a larger space-time of 5 dimension. It is believed that our universe is one of these 4-D space-time membranes. At least one other 4-D space-time membrane is thought to exist parallel to our membrane. The space between these membranes is referred to as the bulk. The collection of theories that use these ideas are referred to as M-Theory.

“3). One of the theories derived from M-Theory is called Warped Geometry developed by a Harvard physicist and another physicist from John Hopkins University. Warped Geometry solves one of the biggest problems in physics called the hierarchy problem. There are different aspects to the hierarchy problem but the one of interest to those of us studying the UFO phenomenon is the puzzle of why the gravity force is exponentially weaker than the other forces of nature (electromagnetism, strong nuclear force and weak nuclear force).

“4) Warped Geometry solves the weakness of the gravity problem by postulating that the second space-time membrane (called the Gravity Brane) that is believed to exist parallel to the space-time membrane we live on (called the Weak Brane) is warped in such a way that it attracts the overwhelming majority of gravitons in the larger 5-D universe to its surface. Therefore virtually all gravitons are in the bulk close to the Gravity Brane which is why gravity is so weak on our Weak Membrane. [The term ‘Weak’ in Weak Membrane derives from the energy level of the weak nuclear force, not from the weakness of gravity.]

“5). General Relativity tells us that distances shrink and time dilates in a strong gravity field. I believe these UFOs are penetrating the bulk and going deep enough into the bulk where the distances between stars shrink to very small distances relative to our Weak Brane. I explain how time dilation is accounted for as well in the book. Anyway the ability to penetrate the bulk solves one of the biggest pieces of the UFO puzzle, which is how they get here. Other aspects of the UFO puzzle are also explained in the book.

“6). The strong gravity field around the UFOs is created by Kaluza-Klein particles that are predicted by M-Theory. These KK particles in turn create micro-black holes which at their singularities (where General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics theories break down) ‘kick’ gravitons into the bulk, or deeper into the bulk if the UFO is already in the bulk. Warped Geometry indicates that gravitons already want to be close to the Gravity Brane (graviton probability function) so I believe the micro-black holes (created by particle accelerators, what UFOs likely are) provide the necessary kick to get gravitons into the bulk so a UFO on the Weak Brane does not feel the gravity force — or very little. This is not anti-gravity, instead it is reducing the gravity force to near zero.”
Got it?

“If we can get spectrographic data on brightly lit UFOs (such as during a UFO ‘wave’ similar to the Hudson Valley, Belgium or Phoenix lights UFO waves where these craft were seen repeatedly over months and years),” adds Schroeder, who has a B.A. in math and an A.A. in aerospace engineering, “then we can see if they are using KK gravitons and also observe the associated spectral signature of decaying micro black holes.” Schroeder says one might place spectrographic recording devices on planes, for starters.

Aliens in the Forest: The Cisco Grove UFO Encounter

The new book "Aliens in the Forest: The Cisco Grove UFO Encounter," by UFO researchers Noe Torres and Ruben Uriarte, tells the story of a man who allegedly encountered "aliens" while bow hunting with two friends in a desolate wilderness in Northern California in 1964.

Sacramento, CA, December 15, 2011 --(PR.com)-- A new book tells the story of a California man who allegedly encountered an unidentified flying object and its occupants in 1964 in the Tahoe National Forest, just east of Sacramento. The book, "Aliens in the Forest: The Cisco Grove UFO Encounter," was written by UFO researchers Noe Torres and Ruben Uriarte, and is available online at RoswellBooks.com, Amazon.com, and most online book sellers.

In the new book, the authors, who are members of the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), relate the story of 26-year-old Donald R. Shrum, a former welder for the Aerojet Missile Corporation of Sacramento, who, according to the book, claims that while bow hunting with two friends in 1964, he saw a very large, cigar-shaped flying saucer zoom across the sky toward him. As told in the book, Shrum was then approached by several very strange non-human beings that he claims came out of the UFO, and that, out of fright, he climbed a tall pine tree from where he resisted the creatures' attempts to abduct him.

Shrum's UFO encounter, as described in the book, reportedly lasted approximately 12 hours, during which, he claims that the "aliens" repeatedly gassed him with a vapor that acted as an asphyxiant, which caused him to briefly lose consciousness. According to the book, Shrum fired arrows from his bow to fend off the invaders, and after running out of arrows, he set fire to various flammable objects he was carrying and threw them down at the creatures.

During his 12 hour ordeal, as told in the book, Shrum claims to have seen two distinct types of UFO entities - one that he describes as a "humanoid" and another that seemed "robotic" or may have been another humanoid wearing a bulky suit that made it seem robotic.

Because Shrum worked for a company that made missiles for the U.S. military, he never revealed his true identity in connection with his UFO encounter until now, according to the book. This UFO case was called "the most spectacular report we have examined" by Coral Lorenzen of the Aerial Phenomenon Investigation Committee (APRO), as quoted in the book. Paul Cerny of the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) is also quoted in the book as saying, "There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that this incident is factual and authentic. I have spent considerable time plus many visits with the main witness, and along with the testimony of the other witnesses, I can rule out any possibility of a hoax."

Shrum's wife, Judi, writes in the book's foreword, "After all these years and for the first time ever, we are disclosing in this book the entire story of my husband’s amazing UFO encounter in hopes that others may learn from it, that others may finally know precisely what happened to us, and that perhaps, even so many years after the fact, somehow we might be able to gain additional insight into exactly what did happen in that dark forest."

Author Ruben Uriarte said, "After spending much time researching this case and talking to the Shrums, I totally believe that Donald’s heroic experience is completely true and fully authentic. I completely endorse it as a factual, believable, true event."

Authors Noe Torres and Ruben Uriarte are active members of the UFO research community with many years of experience investigating UFO cases in the Southwestern U.S. and Northern Mexico. Their research has appeared on the History Channel's UFO Hunters and UFO Files TV shows. Their first book, "Mexico’s Roswell: The Chihuahua UFO Crash," published in 2007, received wide critical acclaim and was the basis for a February 2008 episode of UFO Hunters, in which the authors appeared. The authors have also appeared frequently on many other UFO-related TV and radio shows and have spoken at many conferences and events.

The new book includes over 60 photos, diagrams, sketches, and maps and features art work by noted science-fiction author and illustrator Neil Riebe, as well as a striking front cover illustration by artist Joe Calkins. "Aliens in the Forest" can be purchased from RoswellBooks.com.

Solving The UFO Enigma: How Modern Physics is Revealing the Technology of UFOs

By eworldwire.com

BOSTON/EWORLDWIRE/Dec. 15, 2011–According to Robert L. Schroeder's new book, "Solving the UFO Enigma: How Modern Physics is Revealing the Technology of UFOs," the technology behind the UFO phenomenon can now be explained by modern physics and by a close examination of the more credible UFO reports (Quantum Universe Books, November 28, 2011. ISBN-10: 1452836817, BISAC: Science/Physics, trade paperback, 236 pages, $21.95; available on Amazon, Kindle [$9.95] and at select retail outlets).

"The idea that a subset of all UFO reports represent advanced craft of extraterrestrial origin has been around for a long time - but only recently has the science of physics developed theories which, when correlated with selected UFO data, point directly toward a likely explanation of this alien technology," said Schroeder.

"Modern physics in its attempt to unify the fundamental forces of nature in a 'Theory of Everything' has proposed theories that require the existence of up to 11 space-time dimensions and the possibility of entire universes existing side by side with our own," added Schroeder. The author not only shows how physics has evolved to this point, but he also looks at the unanswered questions of modern physics such as the origin of inertia, the mystery of quantum non-locality, the Higgs or "God" particle, and the puzzle of the relative weakness of gravity.

"It is these unanswered questions, along with certain conjectures and pertinent UFO characteristics, that, when incorporated with the latest cutting edge physics theories, look to be the final keys to explaining UFO technology. The book does contain some of the math of the most important historical physics theories. Although the math isn't essential to understanding the basic theme of the book, it is there for those who would like an even more in-depth knowledge of modern physics," stated Schroeder.

Schroeder's proposed solution to UFO technology is based on some remarkable and rather exotic physics theories that are currently being tested at the Large Hadron Collider particle accelerator in Geneva, Switzerland. "Should these theories prove correct then there is a real possibility that UFO technology is within the reach of our earth civilization. Its development on our planet would open up whole new worlds, both literally and figuratively, to be discovered and explored."

About the Author: Robert Schroeder recently retired after 26 years with a major computer company where he was involved in operations and product management. His educational background includes a B.A. in mathematics from Rutgers University, an M.B.A. and an A.A. in aerospace engineering. He has closely followed developments in modern physics over the years and has researched the UFO phenomenon since the 1960s.

The Dec. 18, 2011, author event at Tatnuck Bookseller in Westborough, Mass., includes a slideshow describing the evolution of modern physics, its relationship to the UFO phenomenon, and excerpts from DVDs of commercial and military pilot sightings of UFOs. The physic's slideshow is at a layman's level and is suitable for general audiences.

Area 51 Personnel Feel 'Betrayed' By Annie Jacobsen's Soviet-Nazi UFO Connection

A bestselling book on Area 51 is so controversial that it has shocked even its sources with an outrageous claim that the infamous Roswell, N.M., UFO crash of 1947 was really caused by Soviet leader Joseph Stalin and one of the most notorious Nazi criminals.

A group of retired test pilots, engineers and military personnel from the fabled Nevada military installation, who played a crucial role in investigative journalist Annie Jacobsen's new book "Area 51: An Uncensored History of America's Top Secret Military Base" (Little, Brown and Co.), are reportedly unhappy about the writer's shocking conclusion.

"It caught us completely by surprise -- we were blindsided," said T.D. Barnes, a former electronics, radar and communications expert who first came to work at Area 51 in 1968.
