Spacecraft Crash-Lands on Comet | VIDEO

Rosetta Comet

DARMSTADT, Germany — For the last two years, the Rosetta spacecraft has danced around a comet. Today, it finally made contact with the icy body — and sent its last signal.

The European Space Agency's (ESA) Rosetta probe ended its historic mission with a controlled descent to the surface of Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko early this morning (Sept. 30). Scientists here at the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) received the confirmation of landing from the spacecraft at about 1:19 p.m. local time (7:19 a.m. EDT/1119 GMT). ...

Missing Spacecraft Found on Comet

Missing Spacecraft Found on Comet 9-2-16

The final resting place of the European comet lander Philae is a mystery no more. After nearly two years of searching, the lander's shadowy grave on Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko has been found in images from its mothership Rosetta.

The European Space Agency's Philae lander touched down on Comet 67P (as scientists call it) in Nov. 12, 2014, but its final location was uncertain due to the probe's rough, bouncy landing. News of Philae's discovery comes just weeks before Rosetta — low on solar power as the comet moves away from the sun — is set for a dramatic touchdown itself on 67P's surface to end the mission. In a statement today (Sept. 5), ESA officials expressed marvel that they found Philae at almost the last minute.

"With only a month left of the Rosetta mission, we are so happy to have finally imaged Philae, and to see it in such amazing detail," said Cecilia Tubiana of the OSIRIS narrow-angle camera team, in a statement. She was the first person to see the images when they were downlinked from Rosetta yesterday. ...

Conspiracy theories never die, but that doesn't mean we can't get smarter about dealing with them

You’ve surely heard the exciting news that the European Space Agency successfully landed a small spacecraft on the surface of Comet 67P—or perhaps we should say “Comet 67P.” Because what you probably haven’t heard is that the ostensible comet is actually a spacecraft, that it has a transmitting tower and other artificial structures on its surface, and that the mission was actually launched to respond to a radio greeting from aliens that NASA received 20 years ago. . . .

Are Organic Molecules Found on Philae Comet Ingredients for Life?

Philae Lander 'Sniffed' Organic Molecules on Comet's Surface

BERLIN — The European Space Agency's Philae comet lander "sniffed" organic molecules before its primary battery ran out and it shut down, German scientists said. They said it was not yet clear whether the molecules included the complex compounds that make up proteins. One of the key aims of the mission is to discover whether carbon-based compounds, the basis of life as we know it, were brought to early Earth by comets.

Philae landed on Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko after a 10-year journey through space aboard the Rosetta spacecraft, on a mission to unlock details about how planets and perhaps even how life evolved. It wrapped up a 57-hour marathon of scientific experiments on the comet's surface on Saturday as its batteries ran out. Philae's COSAC gas-analyzing instrument was able to sniff the comet's ultra-thin atmosphere and detect the first organic molecules after landing, the DLR German Aerospace Center said. The lander also drilled into the comet's surface, although it is still unclear whether Philae managed to deliver a sample to COSAC for analysis. . . .

Mysterious Radio Signals cComing from Rosetta Comet

The European Space Agency (ESA) has released a tape of mysterious radio signals coming from the “Rosetta comet” . . ..

The ESA has dubbed 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko as the “singing comet.” The Agency's blog quotes Karl-Heinz, from Rosetta Plasma Consortium, as saying, “This is exciting because it is completely new to us. We did not expect this and we are still working to understand the physics of what is happening.”

The explanation they are currently giving has to do with geophysics of the object. The blog says the discovery “has taken the RPC scientists somewhat by surprise. The comet seems to be emitting a ‘song’ in the form of oscillations in the magnetic field in the comet’s environment. It is being sung at 40-50 millihertz, far below human hearing, which typically picks up sound between 20 Hz and 20 kHz. To make the music audible to the human ear, the frequencies have been increased by a factor of about 10,000.”

It continues, “The music was heard clearly by the magnetometer experiment (RPC-Mag) for the first time in August, when Rosetta drew to within 100 km of 67P/C-G. The scientists think it must be produced in some way by the activity of the comet, as it releases neutral particles into space where they become electrically charged due to a process called ionization. . . .

UFOs: Rosetta mission comet 'is ALIEN craft attempting to make contact with humans'

Ufologists claim the celestial body contains "alien structures" and that its "mystery song" is an attempt to make communicate with Earth

Space probe Philae is actually a UFO attempting to make contact with humans, conspiracy theorists are claiming.

Ufologists claim the European Space Agency's (ESA) craft, which on Wednesday completed the extraordinary feat of landing on a speeding comet, is of alien origin

An email published ... claimed the agency had joined forces with NASA to "cover-up" the celestial body's true extra-terrestrial nature.

The email, purportedly written by a secret whistle-blowing ESA employee of the ESA, reads: “Do not think for ONE MOMENT that a space agency would suddenly decide to spend billions of dollars to build and send a spacecraft on a 12-year journey to simply take some close-up images of a randomly picked out comet floating in space.”

“Comet 67P is NOT a comet.

“Some 20 years ago Nasa began detecting radio bursts from an unknown origin out in space.

"It would later be known that these had likely come from the direction of the now named comet 67P.

"It does show signs on its outside of machine like parts and unnatural terrain.” . . .
