Asteroid Blindsides Scientists, Narrowly Misses Earth

Asteroid Blindsides Scientists, Narrowly Misses Earth

An asteroid very narrowly missed the Earth last Thursday, and the scientists apparently had no clue about its approach. The large asteroid, about 100 metres in diameter, was nicknamed ‘city-killer’ due to the potential threat it posed.

According to reports, the rock, named Asteroid 2019 OK, passed within 73,000 kilometres of our planet—that’s one-fifth of the distance between the Earth and the moon!

Plane Takes Evasive Maneuvers to Dodge UFO; Investigation Pursues

Plane Takes Evasive Maneuvers to Dodge UFO; Investigation Pursues

2 flight attendants injured after pilots forced to take evasive action over Lake Ontario

A Porter airlines flight crew had to take evasive action to avoid a flying object, which may have been a drone, as the plane approached Toronto's downtown airport on Monday morning.

None of the 54 passengers on board were injured during the incident, now being investigated by the Transportation Safety Board (TSB).

The TSB said the "risk of mid-air collision" happened before 7:30 a.m. ET and involved flight POE204 travelling from Ottawa to Toronto's Billy Bishop Airport.

Porter said the event happened over Lake Ontario near Pickering, Ont. — about 55 kilometres east of Toronto — as the de Havilland Dash 8-400 plane was flying at a height of about 9,000 feet. The statement said pilots noticed an object in the distance, which they originally thought was a balloon.

Jetsetters had the fright of their lives after nearly hitting a rocket made of fizzy drink bottles at 1,500ft.

A report from the air safety body UKAB revealed that the pilot of an Airbus A321 leaving Birmingham Airport spotted what he described as a UFO from the cockpit of his plane.

Crew members on the 200 passenger flight also saw the homemade rocket shooting 100ft past the right side of the plane just after it took off last August.

It passed “very close” to the starboard side of the aircraft but did not make contact, said the UKAB which investigated the incident.

In the report, it was described as “rocket shaped and the size of 2x2 litre fizzy drink bottles.” [...]

Members of the Expedition 44 crew had to move out of the way of satellite debris late in the evening of Saturday, July 25. The most recent reminder that the environment above our world is becoming increasingly cluttered, did not impact crew safety or operations and, in fact, it might even get the station’s current residents a little ahead in terms of scheduled tasks. . . .

A commercial airliner narrowly missed colliding midair with a drone near New York's LaGuardia Airport Friday morning, according to federal officials.

The pilot reportedly had to swerve upward over Brooklyn's Prospect Park in order to avoid the drone as the plane neared the airport. The incident followed several earlier instances of pilots reporting they had had lasers pointed at them near New York airports.

"The flight crew of Shuttle America Flight 2708 reported climbing 200 feet to avoid an unmanned aircraft while on final approach to LaGuardia Airport at about 11 a.m. today," the Federal Aviation Administration said. "The crew ... reported that the unmanned aircraft was operating in the vicinity of Prospect Park in Brooklyn at an altitude of about 2,700 feet. The FAA will investigate.

A newfound asteroid will buzz close by Earth today (March 4), flying safely between our planet and the orbit of the moon, and you can follow the space rock encounter live online.

The asteroid 2014 DX110 will zip by Earth at 4 p.m. EST (2100 GMT) today, just days after its discovery on Feb. 28. NASA officials say it poses no threat to the Earth.

"This asteroid, 2014 DX110, is estimated to be about 100 feet (30 meters) across," officials at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California wrote in an alert. "Its closest approach to Earth will be at about 217,000 miles (about 350,000 kilometers) from Earth at about 1 p.m. PST (4 p.m. EST) [2100 GMT] on March 5. The average distance between Earth and its moon is about 239,000 miles (385,000 kilometers)." . . .

Earth To Have (Another) Close Encounter with an Asteroid

An asteroid a quarter-mile-wide will, astronomically speaking, narrowly miss Earth next week.

And while it is the closest an asteroid this size has come to the home planet since 1976, there's no need to call Bruce Willis ... yet.

"There is no chance that this object will collide with the Earth or moon," Don Yeomans, the manager of NASA's Near Earth Object Program office, told Reuters.

But that doesn't mean the asteroid -- named 2005 YU55 -- won't be a threat to earth in the future. . . .

Italian Pilot Recounts 'Near Miss' with UFO

Near Miss with UFO
UFO encounter described by Italian pilot

Captain Achille Zaghetti was flying from Milan to Heathrow when he and his co-pilot saw a mysterious khaki-coloured, missile-shaped object streaking across the sky above the Kent countryside.

The 10ft-long UFO came so close to the airliner that Capt Zaghetti shouted "Look out! Look out!" to his co-pilot, who also spotted the object.

"It was shaped like a cigar and passed very close, about 300 metres on the right, or 1,000ft," Capt Zaghetti told Italian newspapers, recalling the incident over Lydd, Kent, in 1991.

"It was military beige in colour. My co-pilot and I estimated that it was about three metres long. It was in the evening – around 8 or 9pm – when it is still light at altitude but dark on the ground," said Capt Zaghetti, who lives in Grosseto, Tuscany.

"It could have caused a terrible accident. If you're flying at 700 kilometres an hour, hitting an object of 1kg is like hitting something which weighs 700kg." The UFO was seen on radar by air traffic controllers at Heathrow, who were guiding a British Airways flight into land.

Capt Zaghetti asked the control tower: "Do you see something behind me?" Twenty or 30 seconds later Heathrow officials affirmed that there was an object near the airliner.

The incident was described in MoD files released this week by the National Archive.

Defence officials ruled out the possibility of the object being a British or American missile and said the sighting had no rational explanation.

"In the absence of any clear evidence which could be used to identify the object, it is our intention to treat this sighting like that of any other Unidentified Flying Object," the MoD concluded.

Capt Zaghetti said the object was definitely not a weather balloon and resembled instead the sort of long-distance fuel tanks that fighter aircraft sometimes carry.

He was later contacted by a counter-terrorism official from an American agency who asked for more details about the encounter.

He said he was glad his co-pilot had seen the UFO too because he did not want to be accused of being a fantasist. "And we had to visit the doctors every six months," Capt Zaghetti added, saying there were no doubts about his health at the time.
