DAISETTA, Texas -The mystery over strange lights in the sky north of Houston has been solved. Over the weekend, witnesses and authorities said they observed fire balls that some believed were UFOs. As it turns out, investigators said the objects were actually paper lanterns lit after a wedding ceremony. While lanterns floated into the distance, authorities received a 911 call reporting the sighting. Authorities said a dispatcher received the call from a concerned citizen at 8:27 p.m. on Sunday. The citizen reported seeing "red fire balls in the sky" traveling in a south-west direction from the area of Daisetta in East Liberty County. “It was a 911 call (from someone) deeply concerned of what it might be,” said Captain Keith DeFoor with the Liberty Sheriff’s Department. . . .

'Fire ball' UFO Sighting Reported Outside Houston 3-24-13

The Liberty County Sheriff's Department is investigating a reported UFO sighting on Saturday night.

Authorities said a dispatcher received a call from a concerned citizen at 8:27 p.m. The citizen reported seeing "red fire balls in the sky" traveling in a south-west direction from the area of Daisetta in East Liberty County.

Two deputies responded to the call at 8:31p.m. and said they observed four orange-colored lights traveling in the reported direction at an estimated altitude of 3000 feet. . . .

. . . In search of an explanation, the department made several calls to various agencies

The Houston office of the FAA was contacted, but they were unable to shed any light on the sighting. They referred the department spokesman to Houston Tracon, who also had no reports or information

The Regional Operations Center in Ft. Worth was contacted and their report was also negative.

They suggested contacting the National Weather Bureau for any weather balloons they may have launched and this was done with negative results as well.

The Houston Weather Bureau reported they release two weather balloons per day, but the time, location and large number of balloons reported is not consistent with their work.

Deputies said the wind direction at 3000' was reported to be from the north, which would make any balloon-type object drift in a south-west direction. . . .

They are being called “red fire balls in the sky” by the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office and so far no agency has come forward to claim responsibility for several unidentified flying objects (UFOs) that were spotted in the sky above Daisetta, Texas, around 8:27 p.m. Saturday, March 24.

The resident who made the initial claim was not the only person to see them. In fact, when two Liberty County sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene just a couple of minutes after the call, the fire balls were aloft.

“There were at least 10-12 other citizens on the scene that were observing the same sightings,” said Ken Defoor, spokesperson for the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, in an emailed statement.

The lights were traveling in a southwest direction at an altitude of approximately 3,000 feet.

The deputies reported the lights were in a “loose line” that appeared to be about 10 miles apart from the front light to the last light in the line and moving rather slowly. . . .

HOUSTON, June 3 (UPI) -- Police in Liberty County, Texas, say they are working with the FBI and the Federal Aviation Administration in a review of an alleged UFO sighting.

Ken DeFoor, Liberty County Sheriff's Department chief deputy, told The Houston Chronicle Tuesday an ExpressJet Airlines pilot claimed to have seen on object flying near Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport.

"The FAA is in the process of debriefing the pilot today (Tuesday)," DeFoor said. "We are going to try and come up with a more definite track of this object and its path. We are trying to find out where it came from, where it went, and who may be responsible for it."

"No people were injured and no evasive action on part of the airplane was taken," DeFoor added regarding the Continental Express jet the pilot was operating at the time of last Friday's sighting.

The pilot, whose identity was not reported, said the object appeared to possibly be a missile or rocket.

DeFoor told the Chronicle authorities were investigating the possibility the unknown object may have been launched from the ground.
