basement filled with horse tack hanging from rafters like strips of meat. As his eyes adjust, he finds what he's looking for, the bare spot near the door where Walt Sayer used to keep his freezer.

Even though fifty years have passed, Graves cannot forget the freezer or the two humanoids that may have been inside.

It's been a half-century since the "Incident" at Roswell, N.M., as well, what UFO believers point to as the most infamous crash of an unidentified flying object and government cover-up. But Arizona, the center of national attention recently over a UFO flap in March, may have had its own Roswell, three months after the New Mexico Incident.

      PHOENIX (KSAZ) - A story has been going around the valley about a UFO crash at the base of Squaw Peak Mountain, now Piestewa Peak in 1947. It goes on to say that the Government in an effort to hide all evidence of the crash built the dreamy draw dam over the spacecraft.

There are several versions of the story, one of them is outlined in a book written in 1950 by Frank Scully called Behind the Flying Saucers. Scully wrote that in October of 1947 an alien space saucer crashed in the valley. It bounced, skipped, and landed miles away in Cave Creek or Paradise Valley.

Another version says there were actually aliens on board who perishes, and their bodies were hauled away by the United States government. Dreamy Draw Dam was then allegedly built over the site to cover it up.

"What I sought to do is figure out what happened at Dreamy Draw... all I could find is there were rumors, there was a witness who claimed to have seen something happen either in Cave Creek or Paradise Valley or Dreamy Draw. Unfortunately, before I could speak to this witness directly he passed away," said Alejandro Rojas.

Rojas hosts Open Minds Radio and is a UFO researcher and journalist. He explores UFO phenomena from his valley office.

Rojas acknowledges that the Dreamy Draw Dam UFO story has several holes the witness was said to have been an unsavory character with little credibility. The dam which was allegedly built to hide the alien crash site in 1947 was actually built in 1973 for flood control purposes.

"That's a good point, and that's where the theory kind of falls apart. It was not built until 1973, and we also went out and interviewed a ranger, and he explained how the dam was made," said Rojas.

He says the UFO community relies heavily on anecdotes especially from the earlier years. 1947 was a very busy year.

"In 1947 there were a lot of things being seen in the sky," he said.

     The next time you hike through the Dreamy Draw Recreation Area, watch out for aliens -- not illegal immigrants, but the extra-terrestrial sort. They may be looking for the space ship some people believe crashed there more than 60 years ago.

Today, Dreamy Draw is a quaint, desert park next to Piestewa Peak, where people ride horses, have picnics, and bird watch. But this area also boasts its own alien lore: that there's a 36-foot UFO buried beneath the Dreamy Draw Dam.

There were reportedly two UFO crashes around Phoenix in 1947, one in Dreamy Draw and one in Cave Creek. In the first story, which appears in Frank Scully's popular 1950 book Behind the Flying Saucers, a UFO crashed in the Dreamy Draw area in October, 1947. . . .

Was there Really a UFO Crash in Cave Creek?

Carefree Times gets a taste of the X-Files

     Don't think that we're losing it here at the Carefree Times and watching too many X-Files, but this story has been kicking around since October of 1947 and always makes a good Halloween tale. . . .

Several years ago, a grizzled miner came up to me one night in Cave Creek, after I emceed a "Meet the Candidates" forum, and what he said shocked me. .I only knew this man as "Pete the Miner" who worked the famous Mistress Mine near Seven Springs. "You're not going to believe this," he said, "but a friend of mine watched some government agents back in the late 1940's, recover and truck away wreckage of what looked like a flying saucer. He told me to look it up in the book by Timothy Good "Above Top Secret." Sure enough, on page 394, there it was, a description of a UFO crash just south of the present-day Carefree Highway. So the story goes, the Cave Creek landfill was placed there to cover the site. The landfill is closed now.


Debris along with dirt were trucked down to be placed in the Dreamy Draw Dam along Northern Avenue, a dam that many experts say was never necessary, and finally, Cave Creek Road was "bent" or aligned further to the east.

I was equally astonished when I told then Phoenix city-councilwoman Francis Barwood about this and she decided to investigate. She called me soon afterwards to tell me that many of the records involving whatever had happened were no longer available or had been destroyed! There were markings on the old quadrangle map that showed the alignment for Cave Creek Road moved, an alignment that would have taken it toward the crash site.

Decide for yourself; watch the rare interview above, done by Mufon, with the last surviving witness, Paradise Valley businessman and pilot Selmon Graves, who has since passed away. As a young man, he was the one sitting by the Go John Mine, watching what must have been an incredible sight.
