Argentina's UFO Agency is Being Shut Down - Here's Why

When Mauricio Macri became the new President of Argentina, his administration decided to shut down several pet projects of his predecessor, Christina Fernandez de Kirchner. One particular division is an Argentinian UFO agency.

In May 2011, Fernandez de Kirchner started the Commission for the Study of Aerospace Phenomena or CEFAE, which hired civilian and military experts. The new agency had the objective of getting more details about several UFO sightings in Argentina.

However, the agency’s almost five-year existence only came up with one report and 10 investigated UFO sightings. The one and only study consisted of 12 pages and concluded that nine out of 10 sightings actually involved a bird, soccer ball, helicopter, red lights of an antenna, a star, airplane, Jupiter, the moon and a combination of a star, satellite and NASA’s International Space Station. The 10th case was not resolved because the witness failed to provide a photo or video. However, the study stated that it may be a red laser being shown on a wall.

The CEFAE was also linked to the San Martin National University (UNSM), which public officials allegedly used for personal gain. During Kirchner's time, the school reportedly came up with a degree in aerospace engineering. It was believed, however, that the $15 million in funding the division was actually used to pay party activists and cronies.

Kirchner’s administration was ridden with allegations of corruption. The Macri administration is currently taking down various initiatives set up by its predecessor, which may have been used for purposes other than for the public. [...]

LIMA, Peru — Even at the best of times, Argentina’s former president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner was controversial. Accused of populism, corruption, mismanaging the economy and un-statesmanlike mood swings, she also, apparently, had an interest in extraterrestrial life.

In fact, in May 2011, she launched a new agency within Argentina’s air force specifically to research reports of UFOs on national territory.

Called the Commission for the Study of Aero-spatial Phenomena, or CEFAE in Spanish, it included both military and civilian experts, and aimed to get to the bottom of a spate of sightings across the South American nation.

Amid great fanfare, Brigadier Ernesto Omar Paris, of the Argentine Air Force, said at the time: “This commission will carry out a scientific study of aero-spatial phenomena. With this achievement, we have reached an important goal for our institution.”

Now that Fernandez de Kirchner’s leftist administration has made way for new president Mauricio Macri’s center right government, many of her pet projects are being wound down, and some are even being investigated to see how they spent the public funds they were assigned.

     The radar picked up an object of considerable size, flying from Rio Gallegos toward the north. The device is unable to determine its point of origin. But it flies without stopping. There is astonishment and disquiet. However, the decision in quick and unequivocal: two Mirage interceptors are scrambled from the Tandil Base to intercept the object...and they find that it is a weather balloon launched in Australia, winding up in Argentina's airspace.

More or less, this is the story told by Commodore Jorge Tealdi, press officer for the Argentinean Air Force (FAA) which decided in late 2010 to create a commission to investigate celestial phenomena that penetrate the nation's skies.

The incident he recalled took place several years ago, but it helps to explain the goals of this new commission. There was something strange in the air, an unknown object, and it was possible -- by specific actions -- to establish what it was. "The Argentinean Air Force's main mission is to safeguard Argentinean airspace, and we admit that our skies have cases involving objects or phenomena that cannot be explained. This does not necessarily mean that they are alien spacecraft, but they are indeed unidentified flying objects," explained Tealdi, a resident of Córdoba, born in Morteros, in a statement to Día a Día.

The new commission already has the authorization of the Ministry of Defense and will operate out of the Condor Building as the Comisión de Estudios de Fenómenos Aeroespaciales o Celestes (Aerospatial or Heavenly Phenomena Study Commission). Its members have not yet been appointed, but will include specialists in a variety of disciplines, such as meteorologists, air traffic controllers, pilots and radar experts. Collaborators will also be invited to participate -- Ufologists, for example -- under the command of military personnel.

"This is the first time that the Air Force makes a similar move. Based on sighting reports, we are going to create an official statistical base aimed a creating a sightings map, to know where we need to pay attention. The idea is to have the official Air Force website have a link to any reports and photos we may receive, and that also provides news regarding investigations," said Tealdi.

While the goal is to receive all possible information, he explained that "the experiences of a group of hikers at Mount Uritorco do not have the same weight as those fo a trained pilot flying an aircraft with instruments." He added: "And I say this respectfully, becaus we know that expectations are considerable. Many people send us their concerns, photos and videos and want us to provide an explanation immediately. We are in no position to provide rapid responses, but we can say that the decision to investigate has already been made."

Air safety. In June of last year, a Chinese airport interrupted its activities and cancelled flights for three hours due to a UFO manifestation. Its exact nature remains unknown. In this regard, Commodore Tealdi said: "In the history of Argentinean aviation, there has never been an aerial phenomenon that jeopardized air safety. With the creation of this investigative commission, the priority shall be to deal with cases that may affect this safety beyond any anomalies in the sky."

In the region, Brazil and Uruguay have already implemented commissions of this sort, and in South America, only Perú and Argentina have not opened their files regarding UFO phenomena. "We have nothing to hide and I have no evidence that there is classified or secret information. I repeat, these concerns are precisely [the reason] for the creation of an official statistical database, not only to satisfy general curioisty. We are also charged with guarding our airspace," stressed the military official.

Regarding the protocol to be followed by Air Force pilots in the event of a sighting, Tealdi explained that "a traditional procedure of alerting authorities" is followed.

Regarding expectations in the new undertaking, Tealdi was enthusiastic and prudent all at once. "We cannot dismiss anything, or steer ourselves by preconceptions. We know that we are going to come across all manner of information, from natural phenomena such as light refraction and glow against the clouds, to space junk and burned out satellites. Not to mention jokes, such as tricked photos or hoaxed videos. There will be everything. I look at the sky all day and never saw anyting [unusual], and even so, I'm convinced that we have taken a major step."

Argentina: NASA To Look Into Rio Cuarto UFO?

The phenomenon was seen by residents of that locality and an official air traffic controler. The Air Force is willing to ask help from that U.S. agency in order to clear up the matter. These are the first images taken of the strange object.

     The Argentinean Air Force is looking into a UFO sighting reported by an air traffic controller and hudnreds of residents of Rio Cuarto in the Province of Cordoba (central Argentina), military sources told the EFE news agency.

They indicated that cooperation has been requested from the Comision Nacional de Actividades Espaciales (CONAE) and if necessary, from the National Air and Space Administration (NASA) of the U.S. government.

Spokesmen confirmed that the AAF does not have records of the UFO sighted on Monday night by anb operator of the Rio Cuarto airport and seen by hundreds of residents of that city, located 700 km from Buenos Aires.

The traffic controller saw a strange object that did not reply to his request for identification and later vanished after flying over the airport.

Hundreds of local residents phoned radio and TV stations to report the UFO sighting. Carlos Oyola, spokesman for the Air Force in Rio Cuarto, stated that there was no record of any civillian or military flights at the time of the sighting.

Oyola told the Rio Cuarto press that the object did not correspond to a conventional aircraft "nor one of the satellites that are often seen" over the area.

But Air Force sources told EFE today that Oyola's statements do not imply official admission of the appearance of a UFO because the event has yet to be investigated.

In this regard, the stated that the object could be a weather balloon or an atmospheric phenomenon, and for this reason, cooperation was requested from CONAE and eventually from NASA.

     Hundreds of local residents reported a strange flying object that traveled over the area in an unusual manner. They contacted a radio station to report on the luminous form that was visible in the sky.

Carlos Oyola, a spokesman for the Argentinean Air Force, said in a radio presentation that at the time that the undefined flying object was reported there were no flights scheduled, neither private, nor commercial, nor military.

Officially the Argentinean Air Force had no record of civil or military training flights at night, but the operator of the base's control tower saw an unidentified object that he was unable to identify.

In fact, the operator investigated the information on the object and attempted to communicate with it to request the altitude, registration, aircraft type and advise it of the corresponding air route, but there was no reply.

The object was sighted at 22:30 hours on Monday. According to those who saw it, it was a large object "with a more intensely yellow light than a satellite." It moved at high speed and flew from east to west in an elliptical manner.
