      As Apollo 11 headed to the Moon, the astronauts looked out their window and noticed something—an object, flashing with some kind of regularity.

According to Jay Barbree in his new book Neil Armstrong: A Life of Flight, after they returned to Earth, there was some tension about this subject while the astronauts were in their quarantine module aboard the aircraft carrier USS Hornet (see “Review: Neil Armstong: A Life of Flight”, The Space Review, July 7, 2014). Barbree quoted Armstrong (pg. 300): “From the beginning I felt there was an explanation,” he told me. “We were looking back at lights that steadily flashed—natural lights or human made it seemed to me, and we just didn’t have the facts. I thought we had an obligation not to start some Hollywood frenzy about us being watched and followed by aliens.”

In several different forums Buzz Aldrin has consistently stated that he was pretty sure that the flashing that he saw was part of the Saturn V that had launched them to the Moon:

On Apollo 11 in route to the Moon, I observed a light out the window that appeared to be moving alongside us. There were many explanations of what that could be, other than another spacecraft from another country or another world—it was either the rocket we had separated from, or the 4 panels that moved away when we extracted the lander from the rocket and we were nose to nose with the two spacecraft. So in the close vicinity, moving away, were 4 panels. And I feel absolutely convinced that we were looking at the sun reflected off of one of these panels. Which one? I don’t know. So technically, the definition could be “unidentified.” . . .

     HUNTSVILLE, Alabama – Something was there, floating in space outside the window of Apollo 11, "out there close enough to be observed," as Col. Buzz Aldrin would say years later.

The crew of Apollo 11, en route to the moon, encountered an unidentified flying object.

That doesn't necessarily mean it was little green men in a space ship from another planet or the USS Enterprise or Mork soaring in from Ork.

But something was there.

By the purest definition of the words "unidentified flying object," it's exactly what it was.

Even now, it remains unidentified. . . .

     Even 45 years later, Buzz Aldrin has detailed memories of the Apollo 11 mission, when he became the second man to set foot on the moon.

The ex-astronaut, who is speaking out this month ahead of the 45th anniversary of the 1969 moon landing, discussed the mission, his "UFO" encounter, and more in a Reddit AMA on Tuesday.

Dishing about the moment he saw an "unidentified" object floating outside his Apollo capsule, Aldrin wrote:

On Apollo 11 en route to the Moon, I observed a light out the window that appeared to be moving alongside us. There were many explanations of what that could be, other than another spacecraft from another country or another world -- it was either the rocket we had separated from, or the 4 panels that moved away when we extracted the lander from the rocket and we were nose to nose with the two spacecraft. So in the close vicinity, moving away, were 4 panels. And I feel absolutely convinced that we were looking at the sun reflected off of one of these panels. Which one? I don't know. So technically, the definition could be "unidentified."

Aldrin first recounted his UFO anecdote during a Science Channel program in 2005. At the time, UFO enthusiasts were apparently upset that Aldrin had not shared the information sooner. . . .

Aldrin's About-Face

As most of our regular readers are aware a few weeks ago the Joiner Report, (with host Angelia Joiner) was borne; Angelia started out with a bang in having former CNN news anchor, Miles O’Brien on as her first guest.

Since the premiere she’s maintained her steam with names like, “Billy Cox,” “Milton Torres” and “Leslie Kean.” Last week’s episode was no different, as documentary filmmaker “James Fox” joined Angelia for the hour.

Ufologists, enthusiasts and the curious have been waiting with bated breath for any news on Fox’s latest endeavor, a sequel if you will to the very successful, “Out of The Blue.” Although, initially, the title was going to be an offshoot of the original film, for assorted reasons it has been more accurately named “I Know What I Saw.”

“Somebody Got To Him!”
For those that have listened to the episode, the only complaint was that “it wasn’t long enough!” Fox shared much of his trials and tribulations in making the film, as well as his hopes and goals for its success; however, amongst the interesting minutiae an item I found most intriguing, as I’m sure many of the other listeners did (and will), was the inside scoop on former astronaut, “Buzz Aldrin.”

As most readers are aware Aldrin went public with a UFO sighting he and fellow crew members experienced on the Apollo 11 mission to the moon, (see video below), only to later reverse himself on the Larry King Show
no less.

Aldrin, in contrast to his earlier public statements on the matter, with a model of the Apollo 11 spacecraft in hand, gave a detailed account of leaving earth orbit and preceding to the moon; he cited a “boost protective cover,” various “panels” that come off when the command module does its separation maneuver, as well as the upper stage of the rocket (SIV-B); thus (now) giving the "impression" that this is what he saw.

Obviously, had Aldrin or any of his comrades believed that what they were seeing was any of the a fore mentioned parts or debris “it would have been a non-issue!”

In that vein, Angelia has graciously allowed TUC to share the pertinent snippet with the Fox interview, detailing his quest to interview Aldrin, the latter’s compliance and then last minute refusal.

In the aftermath, it evokes but one question, “why did Buzz Aldrin change his tune?”

Apollo 11 UFO Sighting

     In December 1965, Gemini astronauts James Lovell and Frank Borman also saw a UFO during their second orbit of their record-breaking 14 day flight. Borman reported that he saw an unidentified spacecraft some distance from their capsule. Gemini Control, at Cape Kennedy told him that he was seeing the final stage of their own Titan booster rocket. Borman confirmed that he could see the booster rocket all right, but that he could also see something completely different.

During James Lovell's flight on Gemini 7:

Lovell: BOGEY AT 10 O'CLOCK HIGH.

Capcom: This is Houston. Say again 7.

Lovell: SAID WE HAVE A BOGEY AT 10 O'CLOCK HIGH.

Capcom: Gemini 7, is that the booster or is that an actual sighting? Lovell: WE HAVE SEVERAL...ACTUAL SIGHTING.

Capcom: ...Estimated distance or size?

Lovell: WE ALSO HAVE THE BOOSTER IN SIGHT...

Donald Slayton a Mercury astronaut revealed in an interview he had seen UFOs in 1951:

On July 17, 1962 Major Robert White reported a UFO during his fifty-eight-mile high flight of an X-15.

On May 11, 1962 NASA pilot Joseph Walker said that one of his tasks was to detect UFOs during his X-15 flights. He had filmed five or six UFOs during his record breaking fifty-mile-high flight in April, 1962.

Eugene Cernan was commander of Apollo 17. In a Los Angeles Times article in 1973 he said, about UFOs:

"...I've been asked (about UFOs) and I've said publicly I thought they (UFOs) were somebody else, some other civilization."

Irregardless of the other Astronauts' admissions, Aldrin's statement seems to be an omen of a kind, possibly heralding in a new era of disclosure to the public. I only hope that others will follow his lead, and open up the doors of secrecy that guard what our government knows about UFOs.
