Britain’s Very Own X-Files and Their Space Slime Mystery

      It is Britain’s own version of The X-Files — a unit of experts who specialize in unravelling the origins of mysterious slimes, animals and objects.

Tucked away in a quiet corner of the Natural History Museum in London are a series of laboratories that would not be out of place in the long-running science fiction series.

This is the Identification and Advisory Service, whose job it is to scrutinize the array of strange objects discovered by members of the public — from apparent dragon skulls to objects that appear to come from outer space.

The most recent case is particularly baffling — a mass of slime found on a nature reserve after reports of a meteor streaking through the skies.

Samples of the “intergalactic jelly” were sent to the museum from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds reserve in Somerset. But laboratory tests failed to provide any clues.

“The slime is still a genuine mystery,” said Chesca Rogers, who is leading the effort to identify the gelatinous material. “There are stories in folklore that link it with meteor sightings. Some people think it might be unfertilized frog spawn, others think it is a fungus, or a slime mould or that it is plant-related.” . . .

A man in Dorset has been left mystified after tiny blue spheres fell from the sky into his garden.

      Steve Hornsby from Bournemouth said the 3cm diameter balls came raining down late on Thursday afternoon during a hail storm.

He found about a dozen of the balls in his garden. He said: "[They're] difficult to pick up, I had to get a spoon and flick them into a jam jar."

The Met Office said the jelly-like substance was "not meteorological".

Mr Hornsby, a former aircraft engineer, said: "The sky went a really dark yellow colour.

"As I walked outside to go to the garage there was an instant hail storm for a few seconds and I thought, 'what's that in the grass'?" . . .

Mysterious puddles of jelly baffle fell walkers

HIKERS in the Lake District have been left baffled after the famous fells were invaded by THE BLOB.

     Strange piles of translucent jelly measuring a foot wide have been spotted near Patterdale, just south of Ullswater.

It is thought the mysterious substance is "Star Jelly", which has left scientists bewildered for centuries.

Reports of it date back to the 14th century and there was a reported sighting in 2009 in Scotland and last year in Norfolk.

Old folklore tales reckon it is left over from meteor showers. Other theories say it is the remains of frogs, toads or worms, but there has never been a conclusive explanation.

An incident in 1950 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when four cops found a huge disk of quivering jelly measuring 6ft in diameter inspired the horror film The Blob. . . .
