Pentagon UFO study (the Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program) as a more likely place to look for some of that pesky empirical proof that science nerds like Tyson continue to insist upon. And, as ever, Tyson brought along a few actual facts whose more science-based mysteries nonetheless left Colbert with the sense of wonder he keeps inviting Tyson to rekindle....

Mysterious Star and Aliens Were Hot Topic on Late Show with Stephen Colbert

Somewhere out there, aliens could be watching us. At least that’s what Stephen Colbert tried to prove on Thursday night’s episode of The Late Show.

The host was joined by Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey host Neil deGrasse Tyson and producer Seth MacFarlane to discuss the recent buzz about a potential ‘Alien Megastructure’ in space.

The three discussed how the Kepler telescope observed star KIC 8462852 which is dimming by a large percentage, signaling that it could potentially mean alien life.

Edward Snowden Talks 'Aliens' with Neil deGrasse Tyson | INTERVIEW

Edward Snowden Talks 'Aliens' with Neil deGrasse Tyson

Editor's Note: In Neil deGrasse Tyson’s most recent podcast episode of Star Talk, his special guest was Edward Snowden who appeared via a robot video link called a “beam remote presence system.” In addition to what listeners have come to expect with Snowden interviews, e.g., NSA, CIA minutia etc., the conversation turned to “aliens,” or more accurately, alien and human communications and why they (alien) might get overlooked by means of encryption–FW.

Space Aliens Hidden By Encryption, says Edward Snowden

[...] extraterrestrials may never notice us, either, if our technology is sufficiently sophisticated, whistleblower tells Neil deGrasse Tyson.

The US government whistleblower Edward Snowden believes encryption might make it difficult or even impossible to distinguish signals from alien species from cosmic background radiation. [...]

“If you look at encrypted communication, if they are properly encrypted, there is no real way to tell that they are encrypted,” Snowden said. “You can’t distinguish a properly encrypted communication from random behaviour.”

Therefore, Snowden continued, as human and alien societies get more sophisticated and move from “open communications” to encrypted communication, the signals being broadcast will quickly stop looking like recognisable signals. [...]

Scientists Still Can’t Find UFOs, and They Should Stop Trying

Many scientists are convinced that UFOs exist and we should expend time and billions to find them. What if they’re wrong?

Neil deGrasse Tyson is America’s most famous astrophysicist and host of the modern remake of the science show “Cosmos.” So it is hardly surprising that he has something to say on the subject of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) and little green men.

Last year, Tyson made headlines by joking, I think, to Business Insider, “People ask, ‘If life is teeming across the galaxy, where are they? How come they’re not just walkin’ into the White House or visiting us in Times Square?’ I have some unorthodox thoughts on that matter.” . . .

. . . “A more serious concern I have is, by the way, our hubris forces us to think of ourselves as intelligent. We have a certain intelligence gap between us and other creatures on Earth. You don’t walk by the worm on the street and say, ‘Gee, I wonder what he’s thinking. I’ll somehow have deep insights.’ No, you step on the worm! This is what we do as humans.

“So I wonder if, in fact, we have been observed by aliens and upon close examination of human conduct and human behavior they have concluded that there is no sign of intelligent life on Earth.” . . .

Neil Tyson at Penn State: Embrace Skepticism; Don't Buy into UFO Hype

By Adam Smeltz

Neil deGrasse Tyson     Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson didn't come to Penn State to talk about astrophysics.

. . . Early on, Tyson brought a rhetorical knife to cut down popular mythology over purported alien visits and unidentified flying objects.

Imagine, he said, if you see "lights in the sky and don't what they are."

"If you don't know what it is, you don't know know what it is. You don't make stuff up" just to support theories that lack evidence, Tyson said. " ... The human brain is one of the most deceptive data-taking (devices) there is."

. . . "The government is really bad at keeping secrets," he said, laughing off cover-up theories about alien activity. " . . .
