The field in Denver's mayoral race grew to 16 with an announcement Friday from Jeff Peckman that he would enter the race.
Peckman was the man behind the ballot initiative last year that would have required the city to create the world's first government-sanctioned extraterrestrial-affairs commission. In 2003, he championed the "Safety Through Peace" initiative, which proposed Denver adopt peacefulness programs to lower "society-wide stress."

‘ET’ Commission Makes Ballot

Peckman’s “Alien Initiative” was borne last year around May and quickly attained national attention in conjunction with then talks of releasing video footage of a real alien, i.e., the “Stan Romanek video.” The commission and alien video fodder precipitated appearances on various entertainment shows e.g., Letterman, The Larry King Show et al.This isn’t Peckman’s first rodeo; back in 2003 he introduced the “Safety Through Peace Initiative 101”; had it become law, it would have required the city to employ public stress-reduction measures - such as group meditation sessions, playing relaxing music in public buildings, and changing menus in schools to more “natural” meals.
The measure was soundly defeated in November of the same year, and Peckman’s opponents likened him to a snake-oil salesman, stating that it was all hype, and Peckman was making false promises
His latest concoction, the proposed, ET Affairs Commission would consist of anywhere from a 7 to 18 member panel; their duties would be to “collect information about aliens and how we can peacefully co-exist with them.”
As it was with his previous ballot follies, his detractors, including many on the Denver City council believe that the problem lies in part with how the “quota” is established for the criteria to get a measure or initiative on the ballot; currently, the protocol only requires a small percentage of the total votes (in signatures) of the previous mayoral election, which according to public records has been lackluster. Mainstream critics argue that this “loophole” opens the door for frivolous pursuits re ballot initiatives and is a waste of time and money.
From a Ufological standpoint, and speaking for only myself Peckman’s antics do the field no favors.

Man Wants to Give Obama UFO Briefing

DENVER, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- A man who wants to form an Extraterrestrial Affairs Commission in Denver says he would like to meet with Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama.8-23-08
Jeff Peckman is pushing a ballot initiative that would create the panel. He has offered to give the Illinois senator a briefing on space aliens, The Rocky Mountain News reported Friday.
"I can get him information that I believe is better than what he would get as president," Peckman said. He added that a meeting with Obama is unlikely. Obama will be in Denver to accept the Democratic presidential nomination next week.
"I don't expect anybody to let me meet him in person," Peckman said.
In addition to a meeting with Obama, he is also asking the Democratic Party to include a plank in their platform that includes holding "open, secrecy-free hearings on the UFO/extraterrestrial presence on and around Earth."

Peckman, 54, has gained renown by discussing a video that shows what he says is an extraterrestrial's head looking into a window at night. Peckman has said the alien is about 4 feet tall and can be seen blinking.
On the "Late Show with David Letterman" on Tuesday, Peckman told Letterman that there have been at least 4,000 trace landings, where UFOs landed and left traces that they were there. Peckman also said the government has been covering up encounters for 60 years and that people would know about clean-energy technologies if that wasn't the case.
Peckman said there lately has been an "avalanche of media coverage because ... it seems the media is jumping on board and saying 'let it happen.' "
Letterman told Peckman that he "would like to see (an alien). It would be fun, wouldn't it?" In response, Peckman asked Letterman that if aliens did visit and there was an earthly delegation, would he be willing to be part of that delegation?
Letterman's response: "I kinda got my hands full with T-ball this summer."

Jeff Peckman, who is pushing a ballot initiative to create an Extraterrestrial Affairs Commission in Denver to prepare the city for close encounters of the alien kind, said the video is authentic and convinced him that aliens exist.
"As impressive as it is, it's still one tiny portion in the context of a vast amount of peripheral evidence," he said Wednesday. "It's really the final visual confirmation of what you already know to be true having seen all the other evidence."
When Peckman went before city officials this month to discuss his proposed ET initiative, he promised to show the video.
Peckman said the general public will have to wait to see it because it's being included in a documentary by Stan Romanek.
"No one will be allowed to film the segment with the extraterrestrial because there is an agreement in place limiting that kind of exposure during negotiations for the documentary," he said.
But people won't have to wait too long to see it for themselves.
"There is an open, public meeting in about a month in Colorado Springs," Peckman said. "We'll hope to do one in Denver at some point, and then in a few months, there will be the documentary that anybody can have, and it'll have the footage."
An instructor at the Colorado Film School in Denver scrutinized the video "very carefully" and determined it was authentic, Peckman said.
Peckman, 54, said the video was among the reasons he was "compelled" to launch the proposed ballot initiative, which has generated news as far as South Africa.
"It shows an extraterrestrial's head popping up outside of a window at night, looking in the window, that's visible through an infrared camera," he said. The alien is about 4 feet tall and can be seen blinking, Peckman said earlier this month.
In a statement, Peckman said "other related credible evidence" proving aliens exist will be shown at Friday's news conference, too.
In 2003, Peckman authored an off-beat ballot initiative that would have required the city to implement stress-reduction techniques. The "Safety Through Peace" initiative failed, but garnered 32 percent of the vote.
