UFO Search Ends in Tragic Death

A 48-year-old woman who died waiting for UFOs in the frozen wilderness was a widow who had quit her job as a registered nurse last May, acquaintances say.

Laverne Landis, mother of five grown children, was found dead Monday in a compact car, where she had spent a month camped with Gerald Flach, ,a 38-year-old electrician. He was found semiconscious on a snow-packed trail.

Flach and Landis had met a group of people interested in UFOs at the Psychic Fair in California las January, friends said. Flach told authorities had been received messages through Landis "from some high power."

In October, Flach said, the two were directed to go to the end of the Gunflint Trail and await further messages.

So they traveled to the remote wilderness area in northeastern Minnesota.

After a week they ran out of food and lived on vitamins and lake water. The car ran out of gasoline after two weeks, so they couldn't use the heater. They wrapped their feet and hands in strips of a torn blanket as they continued their vigil.

The watch ended Monday, when rescuers found the body of Landis. She had died of exposure, dehydration and starvation.

When found Landis was wearing open sandals, a sweater, slacks and a coat, with her feet and hands wrapped in strips of blanket, said Bruce Kerfoot of the Gunflint Trail Rescue Squad.

eating. We had some flashlights (small). There were no houses at the time, and it was pitch black. Just the waves were the only sound. Behind us were the sand dunes.

All of a sudden, from above, a bright light shined down on us, and the beach was lit up BRIGHTER than if it was daylight. It was like stadium lights were lit up for as far as we could see. BUT it was SILENT.

My husband and I felt terror. We looked at one another and said RUN, RUN, RUN. We grabbed one or two things, ran towards the sand dunes (leaving most of our things). Car was just on the other side of the dunes on the two lane road that runs along the beach.

As we crossed the huge dunes (a small pass between 2 dunes) I looked back. I couldn't see where the light was coming from. It was like several thousand watts turned on, lighting up the beach. There were no buildings, NOTHING out there. We jumped into the car and I hysterically screamed GO GO GO....and we tore out in the WRONG direction away from where we lived, just going down the road as fast as we could.

After a time, we turned around and went back (only way to get back to pensacola ) and the beach was dark. We drove past the area and kept going. We never stopped. We turned on the radio and heard that there were lots of UFO sightings near the area.

We have been haunted by this since 1982. I am now 65 and my husband is 66. We thought maybe it was something experimental from the air base there. BUT IT WAS SILENT. The light came from above us, but lit up the entire area like daylight. I had to squint. I didn't look up; I was afraid. Neither did my husband. I felt dread, that if we didn't run, something horrible was going to happen, and so did he.

Have you ever had accounts like this? Is there someone who may have experienced this. And no, it wasn't bright nights, wasn't any kind of environmental thing. This was some kind of purposeful, brighter than day light that was shone on us, from the sky. It didn't move, didn't change.....wasn't a helicopter, or plane. SILENT.

Addendum

My husband and I almost NEVER speak of this. We did today. He tells me that he looked up and the light seemed to come from behind us over the dunes. BUT, the light was not pinpoint from a single source. It was diffuse, which scared him even more. The light was not from directly over head. The dunes are approximately 15-20 feet high (or were at the time) and so the light emanated diffusely from much farther up than that. But it was so blinding, that he could not see a source. In his recollection, we ran across a cut out in the dunes to the road and jumped in the car. We never saw ANYTHING above, around. We seemed alone except for the very bright stadium like lights lighting up the area. It was so bright that our eyes hurt. We never saw another car as we drove away. And, it was dark on the other side of the dunes where the car was. As we returned to the area, we do recall that it was dark. We slowed the car, and even though we had left several objects, we didn't go back. Whatever this was, was not something that we could explain on this earth or with physics. My husband grew up on an airbase and was familiar with all aeronautical sounds. I recall hearing NOTHING. I am perplexed to this day and often wonder what would have transpired had we stayed.

UFO Files Exclusive: Cold War Spyplane Incident

The release by Britain’s Ministry of Defence of 15 of its last remaining UFO files at the UK’s National Archives has revealed details of a stunning Cold War close encounter witnessed by the entire crew of a US Air Force spy-plane. Formerly secret RAF files opened at The National Archives include a detailed account of an incident on 19 October 1982 when a USAF RC-135 plane, monitoring Soviet military activity, was buzzed by ‘a big object’ over the Eastern Mediterranean.

According to the files, British personnel at RAF Troodos, a remote base on the island of Cyprus listened in amazement to the radio calls of the American crew as the encounter unfolded at 35,000 feet above the sea.

The UFO – – described as covered in ‘a multitude of flashing lights 20 at a time’ – was picked up on the spylane’s radar as it approached from the south.

It then circled around the plane, call-sign Beano 73 – and closed in as the navigator appealed for help from the ground.

Two US Navy F-14 fighters were scrambled from an aircraft carrier and a RAF Phantom was diverted from a night flying exercise to intercept the UFO, south of the island of Cyprus.

As the three interceptors approached the USAF crew saw the UFO depart towards the African coast. Nothing was seen by the fighter pilots.

The files reveal how RAF personnel at the Troodos radar station monitored the entire incident for a period of 90 minutes, beginning shortly after 4pm local time.

But nothing was seen by British air defence stations – ‘nor was it seen on any ground or seaborne radar, including at 280 SU [280 Signals Unit – RAF Troodos]’.

Following the encounter a secret investigation was launched by the British authorities. The results were sent to the US Department of Defense in November 1982.

Neither the British or US government have ever released information about this incident before the files were opened this week.

Officially the US Air Force’s UFO Project, Blue Book, was closed in 1969. The British Ministry of Defence closed its own UFO desk in 2009 and its secret space intelligence unit, DI55, said it was no longer interested in ‘unidentified aerial phenomena’ (UAP) in 2000.

But the newly-released RAF file reveals that officials ordered a transcript to be made of the tape recording that captured radio transmissions made between the spyplane crew and ground controllers.

Copies of the report were circulated to Assistant Chief Scientist (RAF), DD Ops (GE) RAF, DI55 and DSTI.

Film provided by the RAF Troodos radar station was carefully studied by photographic experts in London and large prints, taken from the radar picture, were prepared for scrutiny by intelligence officers.

The file does not reveal what happened to this evidence. The results of the joint UK/US investigation do not appear in the file.

But a tentative explanation is offered by a senior RAF official, who wrote: ‘We have a strong suspicion that the “UFO” was a mirage effect from lights on the coast of Israel or Lebanon’.

A signal reporting the sighting sent from RAF Troodos to MoD UK on 20 October describes the UFO as ‘larger than [a] RC-135’.

Boeing RC-135 aircraft are used by the USAF and RAF to support intelligence gathering. They have been used in every armed conflict including Cold War operations around the borders of the former Soviet Union. The aircraft are 136ft (41m) in length with a wingspan of 130ft (nearly 40m).

The RAF signal reporting the encounter says the ‘object’ was first spotted:

“…initially about two miles from wing of RC-135…moved position around aircraft and closed…object tailed Beano 73 for 90 mins on its northeast/southwest race track….”

The signal says the UFO was seen by the ‘whole crew’.

Three RC-135s were purchased by the RAF in 2017 to serve with 51 Squadron based at RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire. The crew includes two pilots, a navigator and up to 25 mission staff.

Elsewhere in the file a RAF Group Captain collated information on UFO reports received by his air defence staff for a thirty year period ending in 1996, in response to a Parliamentary Question from the Labour MP for Don Valley, Martin Redmond.

He asked all radar stations including the Ballistic Missile Early Warning Station at RAF Fylingdales on the North York Moors to submit UFO data to HQ No 11 Group.

His report says he could find “no reports or mention [was] found of UFOs detected by ADGE [Air Defence Ground Environment] units or 11/18 Group aircraft using radar equipment“.

A TERRIFYING Cold War near miss witnessed by an entire crew of a US Air Force spy plane has been laid bare in a UFO dossier.

The once top secret file was released by the Ministry of Defence last week, along with several other declassified documents.

They include the gripping account of an unexplained incident on 19 October 1982 when a USAF RC-135 plane snooping on Soviet military activity was buzzed by “a big object” over the Med.

British troops stationed at RAF Troodos – a base on Cyprus – listened in as the American crew called for help as a UFO cloaked in “a multitude of flashing lights, 20 at a time” zoned in.

During the 90 minute incident, two US Navy F-14 fighters were scrambled and an RAF Phantom was diverted from a flying exercise to tail the intruder spotted on the south of the island.

As the three jets approached the American crew watched the UFO turn away and head toward the African coast, but nothing was seen by the fighter pilots.

Drury UFO Incident: Cold Case Review of Sighting & Film of Unidentified Flying Object

Introduction       An event which happened nearly 64 years ago, continues to be cited as a visual observation, of an anomalous object, which is supported by a movie film. At about noon, on 23 August 1953, a Mr T. P. Dury, his wife and young son, observed an unusual object in the sky over Port Moresby, New Guinea. Mr Drury used his movie camera to capture images of the object. Claims have been made that the film returned to Mr Drury had some footage of the object missing.

Technical Note

The intention of section 1 of this paper, is to provide a chronological account, of items about the incident, in the form of direct text quotes, or summaries where items are exceedingly long. Although the chronology is lengthy, it does provide a detailed account of what Australian government Departments, civilian UFO researchers, and other interested parties, have documented about the incident.

In any set of documents, there are inevitable errors. In some cases, the main witness is said to be T. C. Drury; C. T. Drury or T. P. Drury. T. P. Drury is in fact correct. The date of the incident is actually 23 August 1953. However, it is sometimes said to have been 24 August 1953; 23 August 1957; Christmas 1953, or 23 August 1954. The location in at least one document, is said to have been Darwin, although it actually occurred in Port Moresby. The time is generally stated as 12 noon, but in at least once instance is shown as 11 am. There are other inconsistences, which the alert reader will detect.

There are numerous references to the Drury incident, in other UFO magazines; books, and on the internet. However, none of these provide any information, not already provided below, so these have not been cited.

Due to the passage of time, many of the individuals mentioned in this paper are no longer alive. The authors advise the reader, that have not re-interviewed any witnesses to the sighting, given the age of the event. Instead, they feel that there is far more value to utilising the text of sources close to the date of the event. The authors also disclose that they have not been able to view any of the colour film, or any first generation still photographs copied from the film. However, they do cite the opinions of individuals who have done so.

Underwater UFO incident Near Catalina | UFO CHRONICLE – 1982

     A California witness at Avalon Harbor recalled an encounter from 1982 with an underwater UFO as the family sailed to Catalina, according to testimony in Case 72642 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

The event occurred on June 15, 1982.

“My stepfather and mother loved sailing in the 1980s,” the witness stated.“He owned a construction company and made good money. We would rent a sailboat for the weekend and sail to Catalina where my grandmother had a clothing store on the island. We sail over there many times.”

But the family had an odd encounter one evening when the witness, his stepfather and mother were sailing to Catalina.

“Around 8p.m. my mother yells to my stepdad to look over the port side and asked what is that? I looked and saw a huge lighted object moving fast under the water. My mother was very scared and went below.”

The witnesses’ stepfather did not know what the object was either.

“He was in the navy for years and sailed all over the world and knows ships and subs. It lasted around five minutes just going from one side and then the next in a crisscross pattern.”

The family steered away from the object.

UFO Encounter Over Nuclear Weapons Depot

     An American witness recalls an incident that occurred at the former Kriegsfeld Army Depot that housed nuclear weapons, according to testimony in Case 60648 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

The witness was on guard duty Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1982, in tower #5 in what was then West Germany.

“I observed a very dark triangular-shaped craft fly from the southwest over the valley, over the town of Gerbach, and directly over my watch tower flying in a northwest direction,” the witness stated. “I observed the craft for over 10 minutes as I picked it out over the horizon to the southwest.”

Spotting aircraft was a common event.

“It was a natural occurrence to see military aircraft on a normal basis during hours of daylight. I often observed A-10, F-4f, F-111 and OV-10 aircraft in the area and was quite familiar with all military aircraft of the era. It was a hobby for me to watch aircraft and could easily identify aircraft by sight and often just by the noise of their engines.”

But this object was different.

“This dark aircraft peaked my attention because it was flying very slowly and very straight. It was normal to see the aircraft that flew in that area to have some movement, however slight on all three axis of movement. This unknown craft flew as if it were on rails – slow, steady with no appreciable movement outside of the northwest direction of travel until it actually flew above me.”

The witness estimated the object’s distance.

“I would estimate that due to the height of my watch tower and the location of the Army depot on the highest hill in the area and perched at the edge of the hill where I could observe the valley that stretched out in front of me that I first saw the aircraft at least 15 km distant to me, possibly even further. It took at least 7 to 10 minutes for the craft to fly that distance until it was directly above me.” . . .

Recent Russian Newspaper Article Discusses UFO Incidents at Soviet and American Nuclear Weapons Sites

This article compliments another one posted here a few days ago, relating to UFO-involvement in the activation of nuclear missiles at Minot AFB, North Dakota, in 1966, according to retired USAF Captain David H. Schuur, who died on May 31, 2013.

     Persons familiar with my work know that I investigate nuclear weapons-related UFO activity. Over the past 37 years, I have interviewed more than 120 former or retired U.S. military personnel who were involved in UFO incidents at nuclear missile sites, weapons storage depots, strategic bomber bases, or atmospheric test sites in Nevada and the Pacific. Many of my findings are available at my website, www.ufohastings.com. A more comprehensive summary may be found in my 600-page book UFOs and Nukes: Extraordinary Encounters at Nuclear Weapons Sites.

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, a number of ex-Soviet Army personnel came forward and began discussing their involvement in similar incidents in that country during the Cold War era. One of those events occurred on October 4, 1982, near the Ukrainian town of Byelokoroviche, when a disc-shaped UFO apparently hovered over a nuclear missile base for an extended period. At one point during the encounter, a number of nuclear missiles suddenly activated—without authorization from Moscow or any action being taken by the missile launch officers—and were preparing to launch! Had they done so, World War III would have very probably been underway. Fortunately, after 15 seconds, the anomalous activation ceased and the missiles returned to stand-by status. A subsequent investigation by the Soviet government discovered no equipment malfunctions that would have explained the event.

This incident was first publicized in October 1994, on the American ABC News program Prime Time Live (which unethically used KGB documents and source leads provided to its producers by KLAS-TV reporter George Knapp, without crediting his contributions). More recently, on June 16, 2010, a large-circulation Russian newspaper, Life, published an article about the case, which was originally found at http://zhizn.ru. [Direct Link no longer valid] A badly-mangled English translation of the article, courtesy of Google, is also available.

One of the paper’s reporters, Inessa Kornienko, interviewed hitherto unidentified witnesses who provided additional details about the incident. While preparing the article, Kornienko contacted me and asked if I were aware of the case. I told her that not only did I know about it, I had once interviewed a former U.S. Air Force nuclear missile launch officer, David H. Schuur, who had described a very similar event at Minot AFB, North Dakota, in the mid-1960s. A verbatim summary of Schuur’s revelations may be found here.

Kornienko incorporated some of my remarks in the Life article, and noted the obvious similarity between the two cases. Because Google’s Russian-to-English translation is so torturous, and thoroughly incomprehensible at times, I asked the reporter for a few clarifications, which she provided, so that a more user-friendly translation might be achieved. The result follows here.

The Life Article:

Russia and the USA were on the brink of nuclear war because of UFO attacks on military bases where nuclear missiles were on alert.

Sensational documents and other evidence confirm that the Soviet military base near Byelokoroviche, Ukraine, and the U.S. Air Force base near Minot, North Dakota, were attacked by aliens from space. Hovering over the missiles, [in each incident,] a UFO in a matter of seconds hacked the codes required to launch them, nearly unleashing a Third World War. Journalists working for Life found revealing documents about [the Ukrainian incident] and located eyewitnesses to the alien attack.

For a 20-year-old radio operator, Vladimir Matveyev, assigned to the 50th Missile Division RVSN, Carpathian Military District, October 4, 1982 was a day that he will remember for the rest of his life. In the evening, he and a thousand soldiers and officers saw a UFO for almost an hour, as it hovered over the R-12 missile silos. “It was unbelievable. Approximately one-and-a-half kilometers from us hovered an elliptical-shaped object,” the former rocketeer excitedly told Life. “The dimensions of the UFO shocked us—as large as a five-story house! Barely-visible lights flew up to the object. The guys [and I] were on our way to dinner when we all saw it! The UFO continued to hover, slowly moving to the left, as if drifting. One officer tried to get closer to it in a car but the UFO flew away. At this time all of the missile launchers malfunctioned. The UFO [also] blocked radio signal reception in the bunker. We heard only complete silence, which we could not understand, because this had never happened before. We were [later] told that the radio equipment was burnt!”

The Report

In his official statement on the incident, Major Mikhail Kataman, who was responsible for the missiles’ guidance systems, reported that the computer equipment and security systems had been disabled by a powerful [electromagnetic] pulse. He wrote that all of the control panels had lit up, indicating the missiles were preparing to launch toward their strategic targets.

Former TsSBUiS [missile division] Chief Yuri Zolotukhin told a Life journalist, “I too was a witness to these events and also saw the UFO, but could not reveal what had happened to the sensitive equipment because I signed a non-disclosure document [designed to] protect state secrets.” These events happened in the underground bunker where the missile control panels display the missiles’ readiness status. [During the incident] the panels lit up, indicating that the missiles had gone to full combat readiness and were preparing to launch. [Ordinarily] this is possible only after obtaining an order from Moscow. In this case, it happened by itself. The officers on duty at their battle stations were shocked. [Figuratively speaking,] their hair had turned gray. They said that the information appearing on the control panels indicated that all security measures designed to prevent an unauthorized launch of the missiles had been hacked! Within just a few seconds, the launch officers had lost control over their nuclear weapons. Immediately after this occurred, the officers called Moscow. The reply they got was that no order to launch had been issued. After 15 seconds, all of the controls reset to the normal position.

[Former] rocketeer Vladimir Matveyev says, “A few days later, a commission came to the base and interviewed the witnesses. The guys gave them their drawings of the UFO. One of the officers swore on his [Communist] Party membership that he wasn't drunk. A few days later we were lined up [for our morning inspection by our officers] and read an order from the Commander-in-Chief of the Strategic Rocket Forces, designated number R010, which said, ‘If you see a UFO, do not panic and do not shoot.’ Then I realized why the officers who had their finger ‘on the button’ looked so old and had gray hair.”

USA

A U.S. Air Force base in Minot, North Dakota, once experienced a similar incident, this Life journalist was told by American UFO investigator, 60-year-old Robert Hastings. He is the author of research on UFO activity at strategic nuclear facilities. Hastings personally spoke with a [former] Intercontinental Ballistic Missile commander, [then] Lieutenant David Schuur. “Schuur told me that in 1966 he was involved in an event in which an Unidentified Flying Object repeatedly activated [the launch sequence in his] missiles,” says the ufologist. “Schuur told me that his missile guards had informed him that a big, bright object was [moving from missile to missile]. When the UFO [hovered over] a [given] missile, his control panel indicated that it was preparing to launch. This meant that somehow it had received a launch authorization. Every time that happened, Schuur had to manually enter a launch ‘Inhibit’ command. The UFO seemed to be scanning the missiles [because various other functions were temporarily activated as well]. The next day, Schuur’s commanders said that there was nothing to discuss.”

My Take

I think [the UFO] technology allows [their pilots] to launch our missiles. However, they choose not to do so. Cases such as Byelokoroviche and Minot [suggest] that aliens are trying to understand how these systems work, and what they need to do in the event of war breaking out, to stop the feuding children, i.e., us.
