In 1964-65, Airman Third Class Gary L. Ames was an Air Policeman, assigned to the 42nd Combat Defense Squadron, at Loring AFB, Maine. In 2006, he told me,
“I have memories of a UFO incident which occurred in late-October to mid-November 1964. At least one other AP also saw the object.
At the time of the sighting, I was posted near the east side of the runway, about 500 yards from the south end of it, which was not typical. Most of my posts were near B-52s or KC-135s on alert. But that night, I was posted along the base perimeter, about 50 yards beyond the edge of the runway, far away from alert aircraft. I was posted there due to a temporary shortage of dog handlers which usually patrolled the area.
The time [of the sighting] was maybe 1 to 3 a.m. It was a moderately cloudy night but the clouds had cleared and the moon was out, so it was fairly light. I looked toward the end of the runway and noticed an object there. It was not very big, maybe 25-30 feet wide and 10 feet tall or so. It may have been trapezoidal in shape, but I’m not sure. There were no lights on it and it was dark in color. I had my own cheap 10x pocket scope with me and when I looked through it at the object, I could see a very slight violet glow coming from its underside.
I was about 250-300 yards away from the object when I observed it. It was 2-3 feet above the ground. I don't remember any footpads under it, but I was too far away to be certain. I did not see it land, if it did land. I just happened to look in that direction and it was there.
Then I noticed a vehicle going down the runway—not an Air Police vehicle, but a pickup with a ‘Follow Me’ sign on top of it. They were used to guide aircraft around the flight line. The vehicle was about 600 to 700 yards away from the object. A moment later, I looked back at the object but it was no longer there. The whole observation took maybe 10 minutes or less.
I later conversed with another AP who was about 100 yards closer to the object. He also saw it and said it was black with many flat panels on it. He told me it took off so fast as to be a blur. He was not sure what he saw. The other airman was a short black guy who was new to the squadron. I don’t remember his name.
The next afternoon, he and I were both approached by a full colonel who asked us what we saw. When we told him, he told us not to discuss any of it with anyone—ever! The colonel was not in my squadron and I do not remember his name. I doubt that he was with OSI, because I knew most of them. They worked in civilian clothes.
I had not thought about this incident in a long time. To this day, I have no idea what the object was. The next night I looked at the duty blotter but there was nothing on it about my incident. No sentry dogs were alerted, to my knowledge.
I left for Vietnam in 1966 and returned to Dow AFB in 1967. I met an NCO there, named Crewy, I think, who told me he had a similar experience at Loring in 1962. I’m pretty sure he said 1962. His sighting was at night and he told me that object had made a low humming sound.
I also remember an occasion, a few months after my own incident at Loring, when an AP fired several rounds into a snow bank. He said he saw two little men and, after firing a warning shot, he fired on them. He was a rear guard on a ‘loaded’ [nuclear-armed] alert B-52. He was relieved of duty at the time. We all thought he was sleep-walking and woke up startled. All APs have done that at one time or another at night, I think. He was known as the guy who shot at the ‘little green men’. No one took him seriously at the time.
I saw him awhile later, when he was no longer an AP. He told me he thought the incident was real. He said they were gray, not green! Thinking back after all these years, and having talked to a lot of pilots who have seen UFOs, I think maybe the airman did his job and was screwed-over by telling the whole truth. If I was an ET, I would be interested in why these crazy people would want to destroy all life on their planet with these [nuclear] devices.”
