     The tale is told that high in the mountains of BayanKara-Ula, on the boarders of China and Tibet in 1938 - Chi Pu Tei, a professor of archaeology at Beijing University, was leading his students in a detailed survey of interlinked caves and neatly arranged graves containing the skeletons of what appeared to be a strange race of humanoids; 'people' with unnaturally spindly bodies and large, overdeveloped heads. At first, some thought the bodies might actually be those of an unknown species of mountain gorilla. But as Professor Chi Pu Tei reportedly said, "Who ever heard of apes burying each other?"

     The caves also appeared artificial, like a complex system of tunnels and underground storerooms. The walls were squared and glazed, as if cut into the mountain by an unknown and extreme heat source. On the walls were pictograms of the heavens: carvings of the sun, the moon, the stars, and a line of dots leading to the Earth.

     While studying the caves and skeletons, the team stumbled upon its greatest discovery--a large, round stone disk, half buried in the dust on the floor of the cavern. The plate was later dated between 10,000 and 12,000 years old--older than the pyramids of Egypt. It looked like some kind of 'Stone Age Gramophone record'. There was a hole in the center and a fine, spiral groove radiating outward toward the rim. Closer inspection showed the groove to be a continuous, spiraling line of closely-written characters. At the time, nobody understood what it said [if anything]. Eventually, 716 such Dropa plates were excavated. The discs were labeled and stored among other artifacts.
