Looking for Space Aliens a Bit Closer to Home?
Astronomers believe it’s possible that advanced beings lived in or visited our solar system eons ago — and perhaps left behind certain ‘technosignatures.’

     We’re used to the idea of searching for space aliens by scanning the heavens for their radio signals — after all, that’s what Jodie Foster's character does in the 1997 movie Contact and the way alien hunters commonly go about their work.

But some scientists think the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) shouldn’t be limited to far-flung star systems. Rather, they argue, we should consider the possibility that evidence of intelligent aliens might exist here on Earth, or on one or more of our nearest neighbors in the solar system.

     Fortunately, Hollywood maverick Douglas Trumbull has always manned up to his interest in The Great Taboo. And as the special effects wizard behind classics such as “2001,” “Close Encounters” and “Blade Runner” told a German audience in 2012, he’s in good company:

“If you poll people in the world, most people will say they believe in life in the universe. But there’s a big stigma attached to UFOs. And aliens. In the sense that it’s been so demonized in movies and so trivialized in science fiction movies that nobody who has an academic credential will touch that subject. It's an interesting thing.

“So astronomers, physicists, astrophysicists, people in the space program, people in NASA, they all believe in life in the universe," he continued, "but nobody wants to talk about UFOs. Because they’ll lose their job. They’ll lose tenure, they’ll be ridiculed, they’ll become the laughing stock, and so no one wants to talk about it. I think it’s actually a really huge and interesting story. And I’m not afraid of it because I don’t have tenure and I’m not a scientist. So I don’t have anything to lose. So I think it’s very fun territory, very fertile ground.”

De Void brings this up to draw attention, once more, to the massive gaping hole in next Thursday’s two-day symposium, “Preparing for Discovery: A Rational Approach to the Impact of Finding Microbial, Complex, or Intelligent Life Beyond Earth,” in Washingon, D.C. The thing is co-sponsored by NASA and Library of Congress, and true to form, UFOs are most definitely off the table. No surprise, we expect that from the radioastronomy/SETI culture dominating the lineup. But here’s another little contradiction.

Paul Allen, the Microsoft billionaire who has dumped some $30 million into SETI’s empty-handed search for extraterrestrial intelligence, is clearly a huge Douglas Trumbull fan. Four years ago, the man who created Spielberg’s mothership at Devil’s Tower was inducted into Allen’s Science Fiction Museum Hall of Fame. And in April, Allen’s Seattle Cinerama Theatre hosted the premiere of Trumbull’s revolutionary 10-minute 3D film, “UFOTOG,” described as “a dramatic short story about a lone man attempting to photograph UFOs.” The showstopper was "UFOTOG's" state-of-the-art technology. Filmed at 120 frames per second, or four times the industry standard, Trumbull unveiled what he called “a new cinematic language."

Equally significant, “UFOTOG” is also autobiographical. Trumbull went national with his determination to document The Great Taboo during History Channel’s “UFOs On the Record” in 2011. Turning a tricked-out Hummer into a mobile camera and instrumentation platform designed to acquire UFO signatures in various modes, Trumbull's efforts to develop and synchronize corroborative technologies have proven hugely expensive. So the plan now -- after teaming up with modeling whiz and chief MUFON imaging analyst Marc D'Antonio -- is to make the system more portable, more affordable, and to increase sky coverage.

Fully loaded, these downsized "platters" are being engineered to detect not merely speed, direction, and altitude, but transponder indentification, imagery in night-vision, infrared, ultraviolet, etc., along with electromagnetic and even gravitational perturbations. Ideally, Trumbull's evolving multispectral cameras would be triangulated -- the farther apart, the better -- with instant communications features to alert each other to the approach of a bogey. D'Antonio calls them Land Deployment Units and Sea Deployment Units, because the strategy involves scanning the oceans for activity too.

As D'Antonio told Open Minds UFO Radio host Alejandro Rojas last month, the UFOTOG campaign hopes to mass-produce LDUs and SDUs because "this whole project is about finding the smoking gun." They've even worked out a theoretical framework for identifying what that smoking gun might look like; part of it involves string theory and gamma radiation. And again, all this stuff costs $$$.

The obvious question here is, where's Paul Allen?

Avoid Contact with the UFO Elephant in The Room

     Twice in the past year, the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology has held brief hearings on Earth's strides toward the confirmation of extraterrestrial life. Although said proceedings have been exceedingly superficial and accomplished nothing, for the least productive Congress in modern history, those sessions may be as symbolically visionary as Capitol Hill will ever get. Regardless, it makes good political sense that, on Sept. 18, NASA has invited Committee chairman Lamar Smith (R-Tex.) to open its two-day conference on astrobiology in Washington, D.C.

Co-sponsored by the Library of Congress, the symposium’s title — “Preparing for Discovery: A Rational Approach to the Impact of Finding Microbial, Complex, or Intelligent Life Beyond Earth” — is conceptually a great idea. It offers a diverse lineup. There’s even going to be a Vatican emissary to tell us what "discovery" might mean in a religious context.

But nope, you guessed it — no room at the inn for The Great Taboo. And what makes this symposium particularly mind-bending are the contortions in play to avoid contact with the UFO elephant in the room, especially given how so much of its content is devoted to hypothetical scenarios. Garnished heavily (not surprisingly) with SETI radioastronomers, its topics come with provocative titles like “The Moral Status of Non-Human Organisms,” “Would You Baptize an Extraterrestrial?,” “Equating Culture, Civilization, and Moral Development in Imagining ETI: Anthropocentric Assumptions?” and “Communicating With the Other.” But here’s the one that really grabs De Void by the eyeballs — “Alien Minds,” by Susan Schneider,

Schneider is an associate professor with the University of Connecticut’s Department of Philosophy, and here’s part of her lecture description: “Drawing from the computational paradigm in cognitive science, thinking about the technological singularity and philosophical work on the nature of consciousness, this talk comments on what alien minds might be like,” etc. Did you catch that? The nature of consciousness? Many UFO researchers are beginning to agree that consciousness is an integrated component of The Great Taboo. Excerpts from Schneider’s web page: “My current work is on the nature of the self and mind, which I examine from the vantage point of issues in philosophy of mind, cognitive science, metaphysics and neuroethics.” Flirting with metaphysics? At a NASA symposium? Say what?

Even more to the point, earlier this year, in an essay for The New York Times addressing the conundrum of artificial intelligence raised by the Spike Jonze film “Her,” Schneider contemplated the possibilities for uploading one’s mind into a futuristic digital realm in order to escape biology’s programmed obsolescence. And of course, this could easily have originated in some of the earliest SETI discussions about AI-propagated robotic space probes from other worlds. Furthermore, as De Void frequently reminds readers, the idea of ET “postbiologicals” capable of repairing and upgrading their capabilities while exploring the universe was presented in a 2003 International Journal of Astrobiology paper by former NASA chief historian Steven Dick.

Today, as the Baruch S. Blumberg NASA/Library of Congress Chair in Astrobiology, Dick had a big hand in arranging this imminent “Discovery” symposium. To his credit, it includes at least a cursory nod to the frontier of consciousness. But that's about as avant-garde as this event gets. As long as Dick continues to keep the non-hypothetical evidence for UFOs off the agenda — evidence that might even validate, or at least support, his own robotic probe theories — this exercise will probably be like visiting Disney World to admire the parking lot. Those hoping for a more ambitious agenda might be better served by leaving the northern hemisphere altogether and attending more intellectually intrepid reports from scientists in, say, Chile.

Sputnik’s spawn: How the Cold War created astrobiology

     Astronomy and biology have been circling each other with timid infatuation since the first time a human thought about the possibility of other worlds and other suns. But the melding of the two into the modern field of astrobiology really began on Oct. 4, 1957, when a 23-inch aluminum sphere called Sputnik 1 lofted into low Earth orbit from the desert steppe of the Kazakh Republic. Over the following weeks its gently beeping radio signal heralded a new and very uncertain world. Three months later it came tumbling back through the atmosphere, and humanity’s small evolutionary bump was set on a trajectory never before seen in 4 billion years of terrestrial history.

At the time of the ascent of Sputnik, a 32-year-old American called Joshua Lederberg was working in Australia as a visiting professor at the University of Melbourne. Born in 1925 to immigrant parents in New Jersey, Lederberg was a prodigy. Quick-witted, generous, and with an incredible ability to retain information, he blazed through high school and was enrolled at Columbia University by the time he was 15. Earning a degree in zoology and moving on to medical studies, his research interests diverted him to Yale. There, at age 21, he helped research the nascent field of microbial genetics, with work on bacterial gene transfer that would later earn him a share of the 1958 Nobel Prize.1,2

Like the rest of the planet, Australia was transfixed by the Soviet launch; as much for the show of technological prowess as for the fact that a superpower was now also capable of easily lobbing thermonuclear warheads across continents. But, unlike the people around him, Lederberg’s thoughts were galvanized in a different direction. He immediately knew that another type of invisible wall had been breached, a wall that might be keeping even more deadly things at bay, as well as incredible scientific opportunities.

If humans were about to travel in space, we were also about to spread terrestrial organisms to other planets, and conceivably bring alien pathogens back to Earth. As Lederberg saw it, either we were poised to destroy indigenous life-forms across our solar system, or ourselves. Neither was an acceptable option. When he returned to the United States he quickly threw himself into learning all he could about astronomy and rocketry, and began writing urgent letters to the National Academy of Sciences, alerting his colleagues to the imminent danger. . . .

. . . Lederberg wasn’t finished though. He and the young Carl Sagan had become friends in the early 1960s, and together they helped define the emerging fields of solar system exploration and the search for extraterrestrial life. . . .

     Controversial astrobiologist Richard Hoover and his colleagues at the Centre for Astrobiology at the University of Buckingham have been making worldwide headlines for years due to their claims that scientist have already obtained valid evidence of extraterrestrial life. Hoover will be presenting some of this evidence at the International UFO Congress at the Fort McDowell Radisson in Fountain Hills, Arizona on Thursday, February 13.

Hoover’s controversial claims caught major media attention while he was working as the Astrobiology Group Leader at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama in 2011. In March of that year Fox News ran a story about a sneak preview they received of a paper Hoover submitted to the Journal of Cosmology in which he claims to have found evidence of microfossils inside a meteorite.
Hoover told Fox News, “I interpret it as indicating that life is more broadly distributed than restricted strictly to the planet earth.”

The editor-in-chief of the Journal of Cosmology, Harvard astrophysicist Dr. Rudy Schild, said Hoover’s paper was peer-reviewed, and said he agreed with Hoover’s conclusions. However, other NASA scientists and many mainstream astrobiologists remained skeptical. The ensuing debate on Hoover’s findings played out across international headlines.

Purpose

The purpose of this hearing is to examine astrobiology research and the search for biosignatures in our Solar System and beyond. The hearing will include a general assessment of the multi- and interdisciplinary nature of astrobiology research, including the role astrobiology plays in formulating NASA space missions. It will also examine the techniques and capabilities necessary to determine the potential for the existence of biosignatures within our Solar System. With the discovery of potential Earth-like planets outside of our Solar System, the hearing will also investigate what methods are being used to determine if any of these planets may harbor life. The hearing will explore existing and planned astrobiology research strategies and roadmaps.

Background:

The United States pioneered the field of astrobiology, and currently leads the world in astrobiology research. Astrobiology is multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary and attracts physicists, organic chemists, biologists, geologists and astronomers, among others from around the world to the United States to conduct their research. While conducting research, individual scientists must verse themselves in a variety of scientific disciplines, while also collaborating with colleagues across scientific fields. Astrobiologists study microbial life in underwater lakes beneath Antarctica, living organisms that can thrive in extreme temperatures at the edge of volcanic fissures on the bottom of the ocean and bacteria that live in deserts in order to better understand the varied conditions in which life might exist in the diverse environments on planetary bodies in our Solar System and beyond.

In their 2008 Assessment of the NASA Astrobiology Institute, the National Academies of Science collected several definitions of astrobiology from scientists. They found that it “is variously defined as the study of the origin, evolution, distribution, and future of life in the universe; the study of life as a planetary phenomenon; the study of the living universe; or the origin and coevolution of life and habitable environments.”1

Our Solar System

Astrobiology has been a part of space missions almost from the beginning of the space program. Current and future proposed space science missions within our Solar System incorporate astrobiology research, including the Mars rovers and orbiters, Cassini’s fly-by examination of Saturn’s moon Enceladus and proposed robotic missions to the Jupiter moons of Europa and Titan, in addition to many other missions.

Beyond Our Solar System

Astrobiologists and astrophysicists work together to discover and categorize exoplanets beyond our Solar System. The first definitive exoplanet discovery occurred in 1992.2 On September 29, 2010, the Keck Observatory announced that it had identified the first Earth-sized planet orbiting a star in a “habitable zone,” an area where a planet’s distance from its sun increases the possibility it could have surface temperatures that could support the existence of liquid water.3 On April 18, 2013, NASA’s Kepler mission released details of its discovery of two new planetary systems that include three super-Earth sized planets in the “habitable zone.”4 On November 4, NASA announced that a review of Kepler’s data from the past three years showed that there are over 3,500 potential exoplanets in our galaxy, 647 of them located in the “habitable zone.”5 The data also led scientists to estimate that there could be 140 billion planets in the Milky Way galaxy. One of these planets is 12 light years away.6

Congress Holds Session On The Search For Extra­terrestrial Life

     Lawmakers held a free-ranging and sometimes bewilderment-inducing hearing Wednesday on the search for extra­terrestrial life, gradually working around to the question of whether humans are alone in the universe. At the end of the 90-minute session, that issue remained unresolved.

Called “Astrobiology: The Search for Biosignatures in Our Solar System and Beyond,” the House Science Committee’s hearing featured three PhD-credentialed witnesses who are prominent in a scientific field that once was considered speculative. Although the efforts of the world’s scientists have yet to yield even one confirmed example of extraterrestrial life, astronomers have discovered hundreds of planets outside the solar system, and many believe that the galaxy is aswarm with potentially habitable worlds.

The experts at the hearing — NASA astrobiologist Mary Voytek, Massachusetts Institute of Technology planetary scientist Sara Seager and science historian Steven J. Dick — advocated funding for the field, including investment in space telescopes that would be designed to detect chemical signatures of life in the atmospheres of distant, extrasolar planets. . . .

      On 29 December 2012, a fireball lit up the early evening skies over the Sri Lankan province of Polonnaruwa. Hot, sparkling fragments of the fireball rained down across the countryside and witnesses reported the strong odour of tar or asphalt.

Over the next few days, the local police gathered numerous examples of these stones and sent them to the Sri Lankan Medical Research Institute of the Ministry of Health in Colombo. After noticing curious features inside these stones, officials forwarded the samples to a team of astrobiologists at Cardiff University in the UK for further analysis.

The results of these tests, which the Cardiff team reveal today, are extraordinary. They say the stones contain fossilised biological structures fused into the rock matrix and that their tests clearly rule out the possibility of terrestrial contamination. . . .

WASHINGTON -- Lately, a handful of new discoveries make it seem more likely that we are not alone - that there is life somewhere else in the universe.

In the past several days, scientists have reported there are three times as many stars as they previously thought. Another group of researchers discovered a microbe can live on arsenic, expanding our understanding of how life can thrive under the harshest environments. And earlier this year, astronomers for the first time said they'd found a potentially habitable planet.

"The evidence is just getting stronger and stronger," said Carl Pilcher, director of NASA's Astrobiology Institute, which studies the origins, evolution and possibilities of life in the universe. "I think anybody looking at this evidence is going to say, 'There's got to be life out there.'"
