ROSWELL, N.M. -- Thousands of people from around the world are heading to southeastern New Mexico on Thursday for the first day of the Roswell UFO Festival.7-3-08
The annual event pumps hundreds of thousands of dollars into the local economy, with hotel rooms booked solid for miles around the community.
Many people believe say a flying saucer crashed 61 years ago on a ranch near Roswell. Some accused the government of covering up the incident. Widespread interest in that event led to the creation of the UFO Festival.
Weekend events include a parade, alien costume contests and UFO-themed movie showings. The festival lasts through Sunday
