". . . SETI is Starting to Look a Bit of a Joke. That Much is Clear. . . ."

Search For ET
Not a Bleep in Alien Search

Reports support view that SETI is a waste of effort

By David Wilson

. . . We should be asking, What on earth is SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) doing? Founded in 1984, Seti should by now have detected something vaguely significant. Nobody is asking for SETI to trap a UFO and exhibit it in a cage at Madison Square Garden. But if ETs are really out there, it's time SETI picked up at least a casual Klingon "hi" from the stratosphere.

Instead, SETI hasn't detected a bleep. Its finest moment came in 2003, when it repeatedly discerned a strange signal. New Scientist magazine hailed the signal as "an enigma," then back-pedaled, saying, "It could be generated by a previously unknown astronomical phenomenon. Or it could be something much more mundane, maybe an artifact of the telescope itself." How stupid. . . .
