Authorities yesterday said it would take time to find out what caused the puzzling chemical mist and where it came from.

Holidaymakers and locals were hit as they enjoyed the Bank Holiday weekend sunshine at Birling Gap beneath Beachy Head, East Sussex on Sunday.

It was quickly ruled out that it came from the UK mainland due to onshore winds.

It was then feared it had come from chemical industries in Dieppe or Le Havre, northern France – but this was also discounted due weather patterns.
